I am building my first Gasser, (a Giant Big Stick) and have access to a new G38 at a really good price. Is this a good combination, or would a G26 work better all around?
Thanks!

The G26 and G38 end up making really close to the same thrust on their respective best props and common aftermarket mufflers. The 26 converted to EI and running a Macs tuned pipe would sway the decision for me significantly between the two engines, but that's not what's on your plate right now. A good deal on a brand new engine that is suitable for your project is hard to pass up! Keep us posted!

As Chad alluded to though significantly different, the G26 and G38 provide almost identical thrust numbers. The G26 is lighter and makes it's power turning a smaller prop at a much higher rpm, while the heavier G38 has the ability to swing a larger pitch prop.
At 'a really good price', getting the G38 makes sense as later on if you so desire, converting it to EI will lighten it (newer alum. hub model) by at least 1.0 lbs. making it suitable for a host of other models.

Thanks Guys, I got the 38 in a trade (brand new). I talked to Ralph at RCIN and will be shipping it to him today. I am curious about theres not a choke on the carb.
Thanks Again,

You've made a good choice...Ralph will have you going down the right path with your engine, no doubt! Keep us posted on your project!
Most common mufflers are www.bennettbuilt.com inverted pitts style on this engine. A simple APC 18x8 works well for a prop.

Having Ralph (RC Ignitions) give it his diet treatment and ignition conversion is a decision you will never regret .... been there done that.
Having a no choke carb is not that big an issue on a model like the Stick, as there is no cowl to stop you using a thumb for choking. However discussing that drawback with Ralph might just get it all that sorted out.

I have the G38 EI on my Giant Big Stik and it's a good fit. The older G38 comes without a choke and for the Stik it's no problem (as already mentioned) but I switched to the Walbro WT 338-1 which does have a choke.
If I were you, I'd consult Ralph about the carb; he'll probably switch it out for you. In case you ever want the G38 on something with a cowl, you'll be glad.
Edit, by the way, I am using a Bolly wood 19X10 prop. I tried several and the 19X10 seems best to me.

I fly an old model G38 on a Byron Pipe Dream. I fabbed my own choke from aluminum sheet, a spring, some washers and a screw. Works a treat.

Well,........ A funny thing happened on my way to pickup my G38. When I got there a G26EI was available, and now I need to know which Mac Pipe, and what would be the best Prop to use for MAX performance.
Thanks,
Steve

Mac's tuned pipe system for the G26:
Quiet tuned pipe #1095 ..... $168.00
Header pipe #4150 ........... $40.95
Best prop Mejzlik 18x6, and with the above setup approx. 10,000 rpm which the G26 loves.

Just wondering about how mutch does it usually cost for a EI conversion? I have a G45 on my 27% Extra 300 and was thinking about going EI.
