Evolution 40 GX vs 35 GT
#1
I just saw an ad for the new Evo 40-GX! I am an owner of a 35-GT. The 35-GT is now discontinued and replaced by this 40-GX. I looked up the specs and saw that they share the same demensions and the 40-GX is 1.6 oz lighter. If I had to guess I would say they share the same engine block and head but the 40-GX has a longer stoke and/or bore. Simply said they put a new piston/rod/crank in the old 35 GT and said, "we have a new engine." Kinda like taking a worn out 302 and installing a stoker kit to get a 347. The 35-GT has been accused of being over weight and under powered. I guess this is the answer to those cries. I also surmise that the weight savings of 1.6 oz. comes from a trimmed crank/rod/piston... Bottom line here! Is there a "stroker kit" I can buy for my 35-GT to make it a 40-GX?

Eloquent reply, Mr. Stang! LOL I don't know the specs either, but, based on the weight loss, I'm guessing most of the weight loss and cc increase comes from a bigger bore, not a longer stroke. BTW, bet a lot of folks didn't get your 347 stroker reference, but I know I thought of that solution once or twice with my '92 F150 5.0!

Yes, I was/am a bit offended by the negative attitude of your posts, and no, there is no upgrade possiblilty, unless you consider keeping crank and conrod only whist exchanging all the rest as an upgrade.
The 40 engine was a result from the 35 not being an established engine class, and the overly sturdy design, which resulted in a relative heavy engine. An extra weight that many complained about, except the users of the engine.
I personally complained to MVVS because they adhered to relatively long stroke designs, that results in heavier engines.
So they bored out the case, fitted a larger bore liner, and upgraded the engine into the well established 40cc class.
This resulted in more power in a lighter package.

Thank you for explaining the actual differences between the two engines. My original post was actually posted out of excitement that there may be a means of "pepping up" my 35_GT and I love the engine but it will not perform in the aircraft I want to fly that physicaly sized engine in. AeroWorks has a new [link=http://www.aero-works.net/store/detail.aspx?ID=308]35cc Extra 260[/link] that I thought would be ideal for a pepped up Evolution engine thus my excitement for the possibility. Due to the cost of purchacing a new 40cc and still not having anything to put my 35cc into (that I like) my excitement diminished in the second post

You can pep up the engine, which certainly is not underpowered, by using a decent muffler system, like the MVVS tuned pipe, or a good canister. The 35 with canister muffler took my 18 lbs towplane into towering verticals, just short of a torque roll.

I have to say my MVVS 35 in my 15 pound GeeBee Y (inverted side muffler) will not pull like my friends DA 50 in his 87" Yak, but for only a 35 my Gee Bee Y's top speed is impressive !!
it's just a damn good engine !!!
