Ask yourself if you need it or not? If you do not need it, dont buy it. I mean the gear diff works pretty good right?

Mainly they are made for racers for the adjustability. But myself I'd rather spend $45 on an FLM sealed diff so you can tune by different thickness diff fluid. I run one in my Slash and Rustler and they are awesome.
Also I've heard the ball diffs don't hold up very well on brushless power bashing.

you can adjust a normal traxxas gear diff with different oils, no?
a ball diff is definatly an upgrade for a racer as you can tune it
without pulling apart anything (pop a driveshaft out thats all).
not worth $50 though in my opinion and not for bashing obviously
the gear diff is tougher.
just a note most ball diffs set up correctly and maintained well, are
more than capable of taking brushless power, and more to the point more
power than is allowed in most classes of racing.

The traxxas diffs are not sealed so they cannot be tuned with different oils.. You can mod them to be sealed its not hard to do.. basically they leak at the bearings so you have to get a oring seated in there to seal it.. and some silicone around the case..
I've looked at the ball diffs for the rustler, but they are not worth the money.. if you are a serious racer maybe, but for bashing no.. the traxxas diffs work fine the way they are, but could use some adjustability.. I will be doing that mod over the winter months..

Wow...Ya I'm thinking about an FLM diff and transmission case, but that's about $100 alone right there! Probably I'll just get the diff first then go from there btw how does the FLM transmission case hold up when butt-diving? Does it bend/warp at all?

The only problem is, is the stock diff housing is not sealed, so your diff fluid leaks out and makes a nasty gooey mess all inside the tranny case.

If your looking for easy and cheap limited slip action, have a look here. http://monster.traxxas.com/showthrea...highlight=diff
If your wanted to seal the stock diff yourself so you can tune with fluids then look here. Especially have a look at the link in post #30 which shows a larger picture of page 133 in the magazine that he posted. http://monster.traxxas.com/showthrea...leville+washer
More details of the above sealed diff mod. http://monster.traxxas.com/showthread.php?t=486792
And 2 more diff links for the heck of it. http://monster.traxxas.com/showthrea...leville+washer and http://monster.traxxas.com/showthrea...ht=sealed+diff
Don't be afraid to check out all the links as there is a lot of good info in each of them.
