Default hydro help

i want to build an out rigger hydro after i read the june issue of RCBM. i was looking around online and found that cordless drill motors worked good in hydros and it just so happens that my dad broke one of his drills in half and it has a Johnson Electric PT03007 motor in it. http://www.johnsonelectric.com/produ...p?ProdID=75--A
how big of a boat would that motor run? how many cells would you run? would the great planes C-50 ESC work with it? this would be my first electric model and hydro so any help i can get i would greatly appreciate

Unfortunately, for what you want to do, this is not a suitable motor despite its price being right.
The motor is a 600 size motor (36mm diam.) and would only be sized to run on 6-8 cells. The brushes are non-replaceable so once you wear them out the motor is junk. The particular wind of this motor (its nominal voltage rating) is 14.4 v. or in other words 12 cells. If you check the Johnson performance specs for this motor on 14.4 volts and under load (as it would be running in a boat) you will see that it turns in the neighborhood of 11000 rpm. This is much too low for a hydroplane. In a hydroplane (rigger) and using a surface drive you will need the motor to run direct drive (no gears) and ideally you want the motor to turn underload somewhere over 20000 rpm. For this particular motor to turn at that rpm, you would have to apply probably over 20 volts. In a rigger sized to carry that kind of weight, that motor on that kind of voltage would be toast in a few minutes.

What you need is a 700 size motor to run on 12-14 cells. Either the Graupner 700bb 8.4v. (GR 6316) from Hobby Lobby http://www.hobby-lobby.com/speed700.htm or the SS1 from Fine Design (FD-EM #SS1) http://www.finedesignrc.com/motors.asp will do the trick

Look for a esc that will at least handle 60amps and at least 12 cells. A boat esc is best or water proof a car esc.

Max - Unfortunately, the Yellow Jacket rigger is too small a boat to use the 700 motor and 12 cells. It is designed for car-type can motors and 6-8 cells only.
