So Aros your NQD will get more use then your Hydro's LOL!

Anyway I am Still waiting for recievers to come in so I can get my NQD Atlantio Floating for the first time since the electronics box decided to take up a Heavy smoking habbit, like a Chain Smoker it would smell bad and was a major Health risk so I gutted it and am in the process of a Big and rather expensive experiment

Well I hit the water this evening with a fully charged battery.
I had a good run for about 20 yards then it began to slow.
I can definitely say that the props are to much for the 480 motors to handle. It's like stalling the motors and then they draw lots of current. By the temp. of the battery it seems so.. but it does stay together which means the electronics are good for it.
I have 40mm on order and I think I'll try a set of 35mm too.

I'm in the ball park..

hey guys
I've got the NQD high wind, and last weekend i tried it out with a 12v 2000mAh pack. IT FLIES!!!! i've read many times that with 8.4v the NQD electrics smoke, and eventually even fry...but i ran it for a good 5 minutes straight without so much as a hint of smoke. To be honest there was a slight smell of something burning, but that was all. It's especially wicked in very tight turns: the tail just whips out - just as if you pulled up the handbrake suddenly in a car. having said that, i'm going to upgrade the thing with stuff i bought for my home made boat...which is way too heavy and too narrow and too long...it just ploughs through the water at insane speeds and turns like a luge. (see http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_4254576/tm.htm)

that's rotten luck magnat. you can always upgrade to a cheap brushless setup from ebay though? does anyone know which of the feigao brushless motors i should go for, in a 60-70cm boat? they seem to be good value for money aye?

Found the button to upload pictures see below.
The power system is two 550 motors fitted with 10 teeth pulleys each. A pulley belt connects down around a 14 teeth pulley. The bottom 5mm drive shaft is fitted to a ball-race housing.
The bracket is made from aluminum angle cut and machined to fit the motors and bottom drive shaft.
I had an old graupner steerable/adjustable drive unit which i have fitted to the bottom section of the hull using aluminum angle plate.

The power drive system has been bench tested up to 9.6v with the motors spinning at about 22000rpm and the torque should be tremendous using the reducer drive belt system.

hope to have this fully fitted in and tested in the next couple of weeks.

keep going with the speed storm, their is an answer somewhere.

Even if it doesn't work out, it looks darned cool! The setup reminds me of a pully drive blower system for an engine.

cuz you have 2 times more power , change out the gears and put the smaller gear on the dive shaft for the prop , u will get more rpm and probly go faster

But if you leave the big gear on the drive shaft you will have more torque and you can run a larger prop which will also give you more speed.
Nice job, good luck. The videos will tell it all

I will say this about the NQD hydro in stock form I think the main problem with it is that the battery pack that comes with it is total crap because with a decent battery it actually moves at a decent clip, its is deffinatly no speed deamon but it is not as bad as people make it sound, I originally bought it palnning to have to upgrade it so I was not that dissapointed when I saw its stock performance, I fianlly got ro run it with the 400s installed and it is running better but it is a work in progress at the moment. I lost a stock prop the last time I ran it and I am now considering changing out the prop shafts with longer ones to get the props in the water more and also eliminate clearance issues for bigger props so we shal see what happens there

I'm still lurking, waiting for that ONE post that says, "I FOUND THE MAGIC SOLUTION/PERFECT MOD FOR THE NQD!! HERE'S WHAT YOU DO STEP BY STEP:"

Until then, I'll continue to enjoy the posts of you fine people experimenting (NQD pioneers I call you) and keep using mine as a rescue boat for my 1/12 Miss Bud.

I agree. I have a second HQD that I've keep stock and replaced the battery with one that has 3600 mah capacity. It runs OK and is lots of fun. I get about 10-15 min on run time out of it.
I ran the modified NQD with a set of 40mm dia. props. One thing I had to do was change the direction of one of the motors since you can't get a 40mm prop in CCW direction. Be careful if you have to do this, you have to lock the props with two or three tooth lock washers so they don't spin off.
I shot a video but it was 40M. I need to get the size down to 4 or 5M I'll try it again this weekend. I also installed a turning fin and shimmed the front pontoons to give the boat a little extra lift in the nose. I noticed that the steering is very sensitive now. These changes might have cause this or it's simple the additional speed? Also, when both props turn in the same direction you lose a little turning response in one direction and it become more sensitive in the other, but nothing that you can't adjust for.
I also noticed that the props are not surface props. I think this is slowing it down a lot. I have one 40 mm surface prop but I need to get another one.
I'm running a 8.4 volt battery and the 480 motors with ESC. Having ESC is nice.. The battery does run hot but so far no smoke[8D]

As far as the prop change you mentioned, check out my pictures in the thread. I even have a few dimensions that may help you.

So far SJN has the speed record [>:]

The V2 power belt plant is now fitted. electronics fitted and tested, temporary motor cooling system fitted. servo and steering set up and tested, just got to check the balance to decide on location of nicad packs.

see the in progress photos.

Man, even if the setup don't works, that looks AMAZING! Just the motor configuration makes it seem as though the boat's going to FLY!

Correct me if I'm wrong...you're working on the larger of the two hydros, right? I've got the smaller boat and would love to do a similar setup with a pair of 480s.

merdub01 where did you find the belt pulleys. I could use them on another boat I am trying to do a belt reduction system on. I am still workin on my NQD also but ran into a little money problem but so it will take a little longer to finish. I lost a stock prop the other day so I am gonna try to upgrade the prop shafts to 4mm and run 40mm props, I am just waitin on a few parts to come in so I can get it finished.

If you were to go with a 3/16 prop shaft, prop selection/choices would be much greater. Even more of a selection for metal based props.

What are you guy's using to seal the hull? Mine takes in so much water it's almost going to sink by the time the batterie is running low.

Just installed the 9.6v nimh pack in the front of the hull just below the screen.
All runs great on the test bench and the belt drive sounds like a supercharger.
Just got to join the two parts of the hull back together and run some silicone along the joint line to seal.

Hope for a test run in the next couple of days.
I will take some video of the test run.
