I am back after a couple of weeks debating what to do next.
So i have decided to mod the smaller version.
2 brushless motors with reduction gear drive. 2 brushless speed controllers. single 3300 3 lipo pack. Brushless motors free turn at 50,000rpm and fitted to the gear drive free turns at 23,000rpm.
All electronics and hardware fitted and bench tested. Just need to join the hulls back together and tighten then water test.
i will take photos in the next couple of days of the set up and post.

Not Sure it will work but hey give it a go and Get us a Vid !!
I Did a Similiar Idea with an NQD Atlantio.. I Kept it Vector Thrust but made it Duel ESC'D and Two Type 540 Silver cans for a Bit more oomph.. as You will see in this Vid.. it was too Heavy and the But was way low in the water line..
took skill to drive as You had to get used to Steering and Squeezing the Throttle trigger(Pistol grip) then releasing one to make it Turn... you will hear one of the motors going in full reverse lol as I accidently engage reverse a few times lol.. So Yeah one Motor could go forward and one could go back..
Was fun but too slow and too heavy
http://media.putfile.com/Altantio-rebuild
So It Had Two No limit Car ESC's
Two 1800mah Nicad's
Two 540 Silvercans..
If I could have made it lighter it would have been good

Speed Storm small version.
fitted with two 180 brushless motors running two gear boxes 1:2.2 and two stock shafts and props.
good speed and up on the plane but problems with cavitating prop beyond 3/4 throttle.
Also problem with the boat pitching on turns and the front sponsons nose diving.
check out the video.

comments welcome.
I may change this to single prop one gearbox with the two 180 BL motors.

Hey Merdub, why not go with one 540 brushless rather than 2 180's. A 180 is SMALL. I used a 280 BL on my 3D plane and thought it was small.
Doing so will get rid of the complications of using 2 ESC's, 2 motors, 2 drive shaft or gearing, props ect. Not to mention the extreme lack of efficiency of vector thrust. For a hydro, using a rudder and a single prop is nearly a must.

Hey RYAN888.
Seems you know what you are talking about so I am Going with a biggish brushless, single drive, 4mm shaft( for prop availability), and I have just spent about 2hours attacking the lead sieve with Mr Dremel. I have just finished making a turn/spin fin out of aluminium and I will fit a surface prop. The hulls will be glued back together to stop the sieve from leaking and the sponsons and unused hull areas will be filled with foaming resin. If this doesn`t work I will make a nice lacquered wooden stand, strip out the hull then put the TUB on the mantlepiece to collect dust!!!! Tell me, what do you think?[

Hey Magnat,
Just watched your vid, atlantio. Speed in a straight line looks not too bad eh!! Where is the dam? Looks to be around Robinson, Moss Vale way!

Small Speed storm
Next stage is to go to single motor with direct drive. I am going to start with a 500 7.2v brushed graupner motor i have using the same 11.1v 3 cell lipo.
Connected to a 4mm shaft and 32 1.4 pitch size prop.
should be ready for testing in three weeks.
Large speed storm
i am currently modifying this boat for the fourth time with a 700BB graupner 9.6v, single 4mm shaft and 42mm 1.4 pitch prop. I will test this with 16 cells 3300 Nimh (19.2volts) and hope to get around 300 watts output. My hull is sealed on this boat and i have also raised the lip by 1/2 inch using thin marine modelers ply to reduce the water coming in between the top of the hull and removable cowling cover. Should be ready in a couple of weeks.
Keep up the mods in seeking the +35mph speed.

Cool Merdub!
miller
It sounds good. Altough I would go for 3/16" prop shaft as there is a much larger amount of metal props available. Example - Octura - Prather - ABC - Propshop
What BL system are you going for?

I just started to read your revamping of the hydro. May i make a sugestion; get rid of the rudder and u-joint and the whole area. I would use flex cable going thru stuffing tube . Example, go to Blew By you site and look at the hydro called the Zephyr.

[:@] I`m back!!
Well now we have a 21double car motor, car 13 turn escape, Carson rudder, Carson drive shaft and 50m.m. prop. Home made turn fin and cold water pick up.
Test drive in home pool yesterday; Cavitates off the mark {Only half of the prop in the water} Then won`t increase speed. I spat the dummy and pulled full throttle then hand LAUNCHED the tub into the water!!! Guess what????
The bloody thing jumped straight up onto the plane and took off!!!! Only just managed to pull it up b4 destroying itself into the far end of the pool! So now the first chance I get it`s down to the foreshore and hand LAUNCH it into the lake with fingers and toes crossed!!!![>:]
I will take some shots of the fun to show all who are interested.
p.s. Total cost of parts so far=
MOTOR=$24
RUDDER=$6
DRIVE SHAFT=$12
All other parts I already had. Carson parts are cheap and appear to be of good quality,eg; drive shaft has duel ball bearings and seal!!! 2 good!!

Now on days off (2) so in spare time doin` complete rub back to plastic and plastic weld all holes and seams. Hopefully make the hull watertight. Will take the tub to my friendly Jaycar store tomorrow for weigh in. Be nice to get it to middleweight class instead off heavyweight eh!!! Changed my mind about a brushless `cause it is still only an ABS PLASTIC hull. I don`t think it would cop too much pace before self destructing and if you want to be serious with a Hydro at least start with a F/G hull. Object of original upgrade was just to get the thing on the plane CHEAPLY. Am not looking for 35m.p.h. Fingers crossed!!![&:][&:][&:][&:]

I cant Believe this thread is still going, lol ! My NQD sits quietly with no motor in it, waiting for the day i put the SS1 back in it and have a go with 16 cells.. they key to making the nqd corner and go better is modifying the sponsons with more angle of attack, cutting off the side wings at the back, and building up the rear ride shoes also angle of attack, this worked very well for me, and at our local club we raced them for a little while.
Good luck to all of you , but in my opinion it is a very heavy boat and needs a 700 and 12 cells at minimum, a 540 8xl and a 40mm prop and 12 cells should make it reasonably quick, weight reduction is a good thing to do, the wing weighs insane amounts..

Again!!!!!! All rubbed back and painted, now blue and white and no rear wing. Weighs 2.1kgs with batteries (7.2volt 3000mah nmh ). Still have not ventured to the lake yet, but it is ready go, with a hand launch or it sits and cavitates! Am now swearing at the bloody camera`cause it won`t take pictures only vids. Will take a vid of it going???? (hopefully)Stay tuned, more days off soon!![:-]

Yeh Matt, Prop too big!! Good speed but runs out of puff after about 30 meters even with a push start. Didn`t bother with a vid. Next step, 17 double through a Carson gearbox (about 2:1) and retry the 50m.m. prop. Also tried a 41m.m. prop in original set up with 21 double and 17 double, still will not hold it`s speed. It did come close with the 17 double but washed off too much pace when cornering and then would not get up on the plane without a push start.[&o] Never mind, gearbox arriving next week and she`s stripped out AGAIN ready for another try. I will keep you posted. I still have 3.5c.c. Collari Buggy Motor and Pipe which weighs no more than 540 and 3000mah battery. Maybe that is the way to go!!!!

This ends my story with this boat, with one final video to close.
last set up was 700bb turbo + 3 packs 7.2v 3300 NImh (21.6v) + subdrive with 45 prop.
boat went great but deciced to come apart at the hull joints and flood with water and blow the motor.
Decided to give up with this and chuck the hull away as just bought a glow plug .15 size budwieser 28" long that goes like stink, does not leak and great in a clam sea.
Good luck to those continuing with this quest.

O.K. It works!!!!!! YEEEHAAA!!!!Final product is:
Hyper 12 (worked) nitro motor.
42mm plastic prop.
Water cooled head.
Carson shaft and rudder.
Home made aluminium turn fin.
The jet intake and exhaust have been opened to help cooling.
With rear wing installed the whole thing now weighs about 2.4kgs. I still have to hand launch the sucker and must keep it flat out or the motor stalls so to fix that will reinstall the clutch bell from the car and make up a coupling for the drive. Then it will sit and idle then launch on throttle (hopefully)! Next outing I will get a vid of it and post it. Speed is about 30m.p.h. Fast enough for me anyway. I think if it went much faster for too long it would self destruct anyway!!!![:@][:@][:@]
