Wait a second... you were using an outrunner on that?! What was the RPM on that setup? How many cells? I've seen one micro speed demon running off a CD-rom motor... they're so cheap compared to the regular sized hydros too! Whoa! I've got a Hacker B20S with a 4:1 gearbox... is there a water prop I could use on that little beast? I checked the Kv and it's at about 4091 without the gearbox, so I'd be at around 1023 kv with the prop. Any recommendations? BTW, I've got a Mega 16/7/7 that is being taken off a model... kv is 2450. Might carry a LOT more punch than the one you recommend. Any ideas? I can take the hacker out of the plane I don't fly anymore, as well as the Mega which I don't fly either, and put the hacker in the new model...

Uh, btw, I'm new to boats. Would I be a fool to get one of these? I'm experienced in model aircraft, I'm saftey conscious... and I've got a local lake. Actually, I've got too many lakes to my disposal. Operating a generic R/C boat isn't an issue.... no other R/C boats around my area, ever.... Well? I mean, I can underprop it, right?

Your Hacker is an inrunner, not sure about the Mega. We've done alot of testing to get a lightweight motor that will work with out stressing the batteries or getting too hot. The key to this boat is using a high Kv outrunner (2600kv milehigh r/c 400DF). The outrunner has the torque because of the design, and the high Kv gives it RPM's. Sort of the best of both worlds. We are using a Pro lite 1320 3s pack from Thunder Power. Not sure how your setup would work in this boat. You would have to do some experimenting with props and batteries.. We are sort of treading new ground here, so there isn't much info to go on.

As far as a first boat is concerned, it's not very difficult to build and set up. The kit is all precesion laser cut with slots and tabs for alignment. With your airplave experience, it shouldn't be too difficult.

The mega is also an inrunner, but it's a 6 pole inrunner, not a 2 pole inrunner like the Hacker. Pretty sure it's a bigger motor than the 400DF, don't know how the torque is (noone ever posts those details), but it can handle a lot more current than the 400 DF, and it's pretty efficient. Weighs .42 ounces less, but can handle 16 amps continuous without a sweat (and it's really underrated). Same goes for my 16/15/3, it says max amps of 30, but it can handle 45 really well... I think it'd be worth a try. I just need to figure out how to keep the ESC cool, probably need to get a heatsink + water flow. Does this model have a water cooling ability?

We have a larger boat in development with a Mega 16/15/3. It needs at least a 2100Mah pack to feed the motor. There just isn't enough room in the Renegade for that size motor and batt. Keep in mind the hull is just over 13" long. Water can be easily incorporated by your choice of rudder. They are available with and with out a pick up.

WOW I have never been into Electric boats but that Rigger looks like a lot of fun. I might have to buy that kit with the motor soon!

We are working on a new motor that will be water cooled. We'll let you know how it works out.

Well I ordered mine last night, i can't wait to get it built and show the other guys at the pond. I think they would be awesome little race boats and I can see someome starting a class just for them.

I am still waiting on some parts to come in before I start the build...plus I am in the middle of a Gas Hydro build that I would like to completely finish before I start the rigger. I should have the other build done on Saturday and will have the rigger started next week for sure.

Hey Red, have you ever tried a Hitec HS-85 MG for your rudder servo? I have one sitting here and it looks like it will work in the rigger with a little more torque and faster speed than the JR servo on your site. It is also a tad lighter too. Let me know what you think.

I have used the HS-85 in many applications and have always been pleased with performance and durability.

Ray I have used the 85MG in other applications and it is a great little servo! However, with the metal gears it is a heavier servo by quite a bit than say a JR 331 or better yet a JR 241. The rudder input required is quite small and not much torque is needed. You can get adequate mechanical advantage with a short servo arm to preserve the resolution at near 100% travel. Expo helps the most. The lighter the better!
