I'm a novice here so I'm not sure if you'll wanna take my word for it, but I've been reading around these forums quite a bit and I've found that many people have made boats out of nothing, and many people have made boats go fast from stock cheapo-boats. I'd say that you have a wide playing field for what you're asking - and I've heard nothing but good things about the Aquacraft Hammer (in it's price range of course). If' you're willing to spend the money I think the Hammer seems a very good choice and It's got a offshore hull I believe (although it seems very similar to the Sv27 so it might get a little too much air -but that should be no problem if you adjust the tabs to run it wetter). I'm sure it wouldn't zip past you, but in rough water like that I think it's smarter to play it safe and a little extra wet than too dry and the water conditions will make it fun enough at those speeds as it is.

Hope my ideas on the subject might've helped a little -Good luck!

Merc,
When you say 'chase', are you saying this is a recovery boat? That said running 15-20 in .5-1.0 foot swells is a rough ride in a 14 foot fishing boat with a 10 hp outboard. My point is that's pretty rough water for small scale model boating (under 40"). I could get my SV across the pond in that chop but I'd likly never plane it off. Wouldn't be any fun.

Get the surfer dude. Self righting, speed is similar to hammer and certainly within your speed range, add a big lipo and you'll easily get 15-20min in stock form. Pretty much designed for waves, ocean etc. Check out youtube videos.

Would suggest lipo low voltage warning system.

To be honest nimh is on it's way out. I had bought nimh and I have completely switched to lipos, I've got 10 packs of lipo's and have dunked them all. They are sealed very well but of course there are different brands that perhaps aren't up to standards. Check out turborix on ebay or lipos at UH, I've been using them for a year and a half and have not burned any out by pulling too many amps. Also they are becoming very competitive in terms of pricing, can pull more amps than nimhs and can weigh almost half as much as nimh. In fact I think it's the resistance to change that has prevented a lot of people from making the switch to a better system.

Have grabbed two of these chargers and they work awsome, quick and can balance and do two 2s lipo's at a time.

Take a look at zippy lipo's, if you get one pack 4400mah or 5000mah, you will only need 15c size as they would provide over 66-75 amps constant draw and 88-100amp burst . This is more than enough for sv27 requirements as sv only needs 40-45 amps, with a burst of a little higher.

I have the aquacraft hammer, the motor in it is a 550 as well and is same length, so I would think they are almost exactly comparable. On it I would get 10-12min on a 7.4v 2000mah nimh pack. With a lipo 7.4v 5000mah pack which fits in the boat nicely I could get 30-35min on it. I now run 14.8v 5000mah packs in the hammer with an upgraded motor. So you could literly run two 7.4v 5000mah packs with a little bit of weight penalty.

pack I'm running now weighs 560grams or 35oz(14.8v)
7.4v version weighs 350g or 22oz
my 7.4v 5000mah nimh packs weigh 590g with glue, wires and shrinkwrap

also just to let you know there is surprisingly a difference in speed between the lipo and nimh packs. It's weird but the lipos are faster.

And the hammers stock speed gps'd at 23-25km/hr so the apache should be in the same ball park.

Depends on what you want. Personally I like the 5000mah packs, get two and your good to go for sv27 to run in series. I would stick with 2 5000mah packs for now, run em and if you wanted more runs or running time, grab another 2. But that's me, its really whatever you prefer.

If you grab smaller packs you would need 20c-30c depending on the size of the pack but with larger you can go 15c. Here's how the equation works for determining draw.

If one batt is 5000mah and has 15c draw(constant) then it's 5(5000 is 5 amps)X15=75amps constant draw.
If you get smaller, say 2200 at 20c, then equation would be 2.2X20=44amps which would be borderline for sv27 so you would look for 25c or 30c
so one last one just so you get the hang of it 2200mah batt with 30c equals 2.2X30=66amps draw

Generally they also tell you burst draw too, but make sure your constant draw fits the bill.

I've heard the zippys at uh are pretty good, you could ask for others to post other brands.

unless its slower or smaller it would not run longer. If it runs faster and is bigger then how can it use less energy?

Well, Nicd has a memory and Nimh doesnt. They have the same voltage(1.2 per cell) and you can use them in the same applications. Nimh Last longer if you take care of them but Nicd can last long to. You should discharge after every run with good nicds to keep them going strong. Nimh has a longer runtime to. I think 2400 sanyos(in my opinion) can perform better than the new high capacity nimhs( not in runtime tho).
