Can you thin out fiberglass? If there is something that will can you list it. And most of all will it work with the hardner and set up the fiberglass? Open for any ideas.

Styrene or Acetone and yes it works with the resin and hardner. It depends on what type of resin you are using. Ask DreminHemi for details and take a look at his build thread.

Heat it up, and you'll need less epoxy to soak the glassfiber.

I'm going to use it as a sealer for my boat. Just want those small edges to not fill in.

Looks like I arrived too late. What is mentioned above will thin things out to accomplish what I think your doing. Heating up the resin to thin will work to a degree (pun intended) however will severely limit your work time so I would not recommend it. When properly mixed with catalyst at normal temperatures (65-80F) you will have about 20 minutes +/- a few. Heat up that same mixture and you may cut the work time in half because it will kick off MUCH earlier. Now if you plan only to do a small part, than go ahead and heat....but how can you safely do that? Just use styrene or acetone to accomplish your goals. Just my $.02.

If your applying it to balsa wood just brush on some super glue .

Hey gerwin why does epoxy rule
Ive got an epoxy boat and it is a weak piece of rubbish and a true pain in the but to repair (H AN M BRAND) not cheap boat
Polyester or vinylester boats far more user friendly to make and repair and believe it vinyl is stronger by far epoxy is only good if you have core laminate
The majority of guys on here prefer to keep it simple and easily repairable

Sorry for straying from topic but gerwin try to be a bit more diplomatic when answering someones post we all have opinions and if they differ its not rubbish (well sorry had to change the s word lol but i think everyone gets it)

The "key" to any repair is to remove the "dead Glass" and overlap your seams.

Yes carbon can be repaired
The problem is if it is cosmetic carbon which has the awesome gloss finish can be very hard to repair and have it not noticeable
As for using carbon its expensive and not very structural fo rc boat aplication as it really intended for epoxy core lamination tends to shatter if just straight layup no core
But you got to admit it looks sweet inside a boat as bling factor

Also carbon is very, very itchy to work with when you sand it down for repair. It seems to give me an extra amount of irritation for some reason. Be careful when doing repairs.....

I use a good respirator when sanding down any composite material. Fortunately I don't ever get irritated skin from sanding/painting/glassing but my lungs definitely know when something wrong is in the air.

I was just wondering about some of the cats available that are in carbon fiber, I have had many helicopters with carbon frames and they have a tendency to be brittle in a crash. So i think i will stick with fiberglass thats fairly easy to repair. Thanks !

The advantage of CF is it is much stronger and lighter than regular fiber glass, so you don't need as much cloth. If you use CF with a criss-cross weave it would conform to round shapes a little easier than straight cloth CF.

Quick question, what is the easiest way to repair chipped Gelcoat? Yes it is fiberglass. Or do I to spend $50.00 to purchase finishing resin and pigment. Can I just spray with white epoxey paint. Very small area to repair, Last time i purchased a quart of finishing gelcoat and used maybe a couple of ounces. Just to much to go bad before it can be used. Just threw out two cans that went bad. Not much shelf life.

The best recommendation I would give to you would be mix a small amount of gelcoat (even old stuff, just find a good portion) and dab it onto the chip. Using a sort of firm piece of plastic film place that over your dabbed gelcoat and tap over it to work the gel around easily and make it spread out. Leave the plastic film over the damaged area until it fully cures. You will then have a perfectly smooth surface once you remove the plastic.....feathered out better than you could sand. May only require a little buffing to further blend in. Good luck.

Oh yeah, make sure you prep the area making sure there is no grease or wax on and around the area in need of repair.
