Straight up. Some keep them in the box, but most require at least 1" vertical, the more vertical, the better reception.

I relocated my entire RX to a traxxas waterproof RX box, mounted as far to the right rear as possible, then relocated the antenna through the hull on the corner deck. It only sticks up about 3 or 4 inches, but thats plenty. I'll post some pics as soon as i get my camera working again.
