Well the wet sanding didn't come out very good I don't know if I was using the wrong grit or sanded to long. I was using 1000 grit and I did it lightly but it seemed to come out like crap. I only did it on the canopy. I guess this is gonna take some practice I patched a hole in the canopy. I didn't like the way it looked I bought it used and the previous owner cut a hole just above the carb to allow air in. Here I go again sanding patching and priming.

Ok here's the finished product. My first paint job its not professional by any means but at least the cracks and holes are fixed. I'm still working on the canopy I'll post some more pictures as I finish it. A couple pics are close ups and I added one of the inside of the hull. What do you guys use to clean up the inside of the hull?

Its not over spray just dirt and fuel and grease. I was thinking of cleaning the inside of the hull and then maybe painting the inside or maybe laying some carbon fiber, maybe.

1000 grit might be too fine/smooth to spray over, the paint won't bite onto that & may peel off easliy. I use 400 grit before I do my clear coat.

1000 grit is fine for color sanding, anything more like 800 or 400 will show some lines in the clear..
are you sanding the color paint or the clear?
In the past I sand only the clear and not the color paint, specialy on metalics

just use a gray scotchbright pad to scuff the color them was the hull off with dish washing soap..then let it dry for ahour and tac the hull off with a tac cloth to get any dust off of the hull.
then put three-four coats of clear yhen wet sand it with 1500 wetsand paper them buff it out with buffing compound then machine glaze it then hand glaze it....DO NOT WAX THE BOAT FOR 90 DAYS!!!!!!!!! Paint isnt full cure until 90 days..if you wax it before then 90 days, the paint wont fully cure...

off the wall question about wet sanding.
I use to work in a paint shop and noticed that after wet sanding, and buffing the cars paint job the painter would then put corn starch on the pad and buff the paint some more. What are they doing with the corn starch?
What effect will it have on a boats paint job?

misshydro, I see you do painting for a living so you would be a good person to ask. I resanded the canopy because the first time I screwed up and I also wanted to fill in the hole that was cut out by the previous owner. After doing the patching and resanding I thought I had everything to a smooth finish but then I sprayed the primer and found some small spots that showed that everything was not to a smooth finish like I thought. What would be the best way to fill in these tiny imperfections?

Pcg33k there is a Product called Spot putty sold in a tube that is used to fill small pits and imperfections in the finish be sure you allow plenty of time for it to dry (cure) before you start to sand it smooth it is found in a tube in most Auto parts House's it should do the trick for you. Doug.

One more thing what would be the best way to paint the air scoops red and the rest of the canopy black. The first way I tried it didn't work out to good. Basically I taped off the air scoops then painted the canopy black then tried painting the air scoops red taping off around the air scoops once everything was dried. That didn't work out to good the red paint dripped onto the black. So I sanded and now I'm on my second attempt. Any suggestions?

Spray the Scoop red let it dry fully then Mask it off and then paint the rest remove the masking tape as soon as possible so as to not leave any hard to remove tape residue and mess the red up again. Doug.

I agree with LawHound. when I worked as a paint prep. that is what we did. We used a fine blue tape that we then would attach the masking tape and paper to. the blue tape was very skinny and had a plastic look and feel to it, but was very easily applied. it is the same tape used when a person pin stripes a car by hand to make a gide mark.

Dont use spot puddy!!! It will shrink up in time and crack on you..I Use USC ICING... It's like mixing bondo but like a very light weigh pollester puddy and you can sand it with 180....Paint the scoops red first then tap the scoops off after four hours of dry time then paint the black...

I think that's what I did wrong the first time I left the tape on for a long time and when I pulled it off it left some residue. Any particular technique I should use to mask off the scoops so as to not get any black paint on the red?
