Vibrating Madness
I have an old 36'' Wood Hydroplane that iI have put back into running condition. The engine is a Irvine .61 marine engine, which runs great, but here's my problem, the motor vibrates the mount and the muffler loose. I have used rubber washers on the motor mount and have used medium and high strength locktitte on the muffler. How can I solve this problem?

Shoey, what style drive line are you running? I'm assuming this is an "OLD" boat that you have reclaimed from the dark corner of your shop. If it has the old style universal joint style drive line, I would look closely for worn universals and even suspect a bent shaft. Definately go with Ron's recommendation to check the prop balance also. Another remote possibility is that the flywheel is not running true.

Cheap tricks?
Take off the coupler to the propshaft and run the engine (in the boat) , if the vibrating is gone, you'll have to search for trouble in the rest of the drive train.
I agree with the other guys, that a bent shaft, worn out bushings or an unbalanced prop is most likely the cause.
Regards, Jan.

I'll see if I can get somebody up in your neighborhood to take a look at your boat. I know of one guy up there that is pretty good with any kind of R/C boat, Scott VanSlooten. E-mail him at [email protected] and tell him that I recommended him to you.

Thanks for the offer Ron, but I don't want to waste his time, I'll get it figured out eventually. Well I ran the engine on a test stand and that is definetly where the vibration is coming from, so what can I do about it?

A one cylinder engine is always going to vibrate. I suggest mounting the engine as firmly as possible to the boat. From your picture it looks like the engine is connected to the mount with phillips head screws. It's really tough to get these tight enough. I'd replace them with allen head sockets. I'd also ditch the washers. By allowing the engine to move, you may actually be creating more vibration.

RE: Vibrating Madness
Well the engine did not vibrate any screws out, without the the rubber washers. I'll have to see how it works in the boat. Thanks for the tip Chuck!
