shockwave 36 problems
HI, WONDERING IF ANYONE CAN HELP ME OUT. I BOUGHT A SHOCKWAVE 36, THE BOAT IS BEAUTIFUL, I BROKE IT IN AND NOW I AM TRYING TO RUN THE BOAT NORMALLY. WHEN THE TANK IS FULL IT RUNS GREAT, SUPER FAST, DEFINITLY FASTER THAN 30 MPH, AS SOON AS IT GETS DOWN TO 3/4 OF A TANK THE BOAT STARTS BOGGING. I CHECKED OUT THE FUEL SYSTEM AND NOTICED THE FUEL CAP DONT SEAL VERY WELL, ITS SPITTING FUEL OUT OF IT. I MADE A NICE GASKET FOR IT AND IT IS SEALED TIGHT, BUT DID NOT CURE THE PROBLEM... ALSO TRIED VENTING THE TANK WITH NO PRESSURE FROM THE EXUAST AND IT BOGGED WORSE, TRIED RICHER, TRIED LEANER, CANT GET IT... ON TOP OF THAT THE PROP SHAFT BROKE................PLEASE HELP
THANKS TONY |
RE: shockwave 36 problems
Tony if i were you I would look at dynamite's web site or horizon hobbies and get a new gas tank. I also have a shockwave and have not had these problems.

RE: shockwave 36 problems
are you getting a good airflow to the carb? cause sometimes my nitro hammer lows down alittle bit if it isnt getting clean air.

RE: shockwave 36 problems
[8D]Mine runs great all the way down to the bottom of the tank, you do have to make sure your pressure feed line doesn't have any leaks in it, also make sure your pressure nipple on the pipe is clear, you may have to run a piece of wire through it to clean it out . make sure the cap is sealing ok also sounds like you have that covered though. richen it up a bit also, My tuned pipe coupler fell apart so make sure that is ok also, cause with no muffler pressure you won't get enough pressure in your tank. you may try lifting your fuel tank to to make sure its not kinked under the tank. The prop shaft is a prather product so you may be able to pick up a prather one before the pro boat parts are available one of the secrets to longevity seems to be lots of grease !!! I lube mine at least every hour of run time. also make sure you leave a little slack in the drive cable when you slide it into the collet. cause as you wind it up under power it shrinks in length a bit, no gap, no room to shrink, BROKEN cable shaft!!!! [X(] SOOOO make sure you have pressure in your tank and slack in your drive Cable and you should be able to enjoy you boat like I have been enjoying mine lately.:D Let me know how you make out Butch in Niagara Falls oh also change your glow plug tooooo

RE: shockwave 36 problems
Seal that fuel system..... take the whole thing out, presurise it and submerse in the tub to check for leaks.

RE: shockwave 36 problems
Yea, that was it. Itook out the whole system & checked it in a bucket... the filler cap was leaking. I bought another gasket for it and it seals great... it also runs great.. thanks for the tip..
THANKS TONY |
RE: shockwave 36 problems
Tony,
What did you use for the fuel tank gasket exactly? |
RE: shockwave 36 problems
[8D]just take the cap to a local hardware store and see what you can find. I think a garden hose washer is close in size and they are only a few cents. Butch in Niagara Falls

RE: shockwave 36 problems
I BOUGHT ANOTHER TANK, THAT ALSO LEAKED SO I TOOK THE GASKET FROM THAT TANK & DOUBLED IT WITH MINE, IT'S TIGHT AS A DRUM, RUNS GREAT.... NEXT PROBLEM IS BREAKING RUTTERS
THANKS TONY |
RE: shockwave 36 problems
I HAD THE SAME PROB WITH A THE CAP LEAKING PRESURE OUT... SENCE I WAS AT THE LAKE ALL I COULD FUND WAS THE PLASTIC OUTTER LINNER FOR THE NEWSPAPER.. I CUT A SQUARE OUT AND NOW WORKS GREAT. ALSO ADDED A QUICK FUELER TO THE MAIN FUEL LINE. NO RUDDER PROBS YET! ONLY THE THE FLEX SHAFT BREAKING AT THE BEGIN OF THE STRANDED WIRES...

I broke 2 rudders in a row to the advise of other and chage the linkage to a beefier one , I also removed the bottom screw holding the rudder now if i hit somethig it just kicks up without braking, I also installed a air scoop on top of the engine in between the drivers that way more air gets to the more and that = more speed and more power out of turns.

RE: shockwave 36 problems
wait about the cable shaft bout how much slack should there be?

little less than a 1/4", keep it greassed, and let some air inside the hull use vents like this

RE: shockwave 36 problems
does any body else's shockwave start "dancing" from side to side at high speeds? it makes me nervous when i'm flyin across the top of the water when all of the sudden the boat starts jumping around!! [sm=eek.gif]

RE: shockwave 36 problems
It's called chine-walking. That usually comes from the prop being not quite high enough. Try doing that in a full-sized boat doing 70, it's scary!
|
RE: shockwave 36 problems
lower the tabs
|
RE: shockwave 36 problems
hey ron, so is that a flaw in the design of the boat?
i played around with the trim tabs a little bit. I wouldn't say i cured the problem, but I did correct it to an extent. it will run smoothly (at full speed) until it runs into a small disturbance (a wake or something) then it goes buck wild! |
RE: shockwave 36 problems
You could say that. Sometimes a smaller prop will take care of that. I had one boat that I built for my son that would chine-walk badly and it took me a while to get it taken care of, about the time that I sold it. It5 too was a new design at the time so someone didn't take the time to really make the instructions correct. I had to redrill the hole in the transom to raise the strut a little.

RE: shockwave 36 problems
A friend of mine bought the Shockwave 36. Its a real cool looking boat but man his is slow. Well at least slower than I think it should be. It sounds to me like its over proped. The RPMs on the engine sound fairly low when its cruising around, but go way up any time he turns sharply. He has tuned the engine every which way and cant get any more speed. He did the head shim removal and adjusted the prop shaft but nothing helped that much. His boat on plane is still quite low in the water and just looks under powered. I'm sure theres something that can be done to make it better, any ideas? I wanted the same boat but seeing how fast his is I think I would get soemthing different.

my sw36 screams, sound's like there's a major prob somewhere with yer friend's boat. THe SW comes with a prather 230 and the boat runs great with that. some people say it goes faster with the 235, but the 230 is just fine. Did he break in in properly? THe HSN should be between 2 & 2.5 turns out. Have him start from scratch with the tuning.
here are some pics of me and my buddy's boat. I think they are pretty dang fast...and as far as sitting low in the water at speed, take a look for yourself (pardon the blurriness, the pictures were taken close to dusk) |
RE: shockwave 36 problems
hello i have a sw36 and it has run a totol of 4 minites because my flex shaft broke when i put 1/4 gap do i need washers in that space or no?? pluss is traxxas 20% a good fuel to run through it?? thanks in advance bj
Josh21's boat goes buck wild sounds like fun i wish my sw36 would go somekinda wild maybee not buck wild but aittle wild would be nice. |
RE: shockwave 36 problems
Run 30% and yes you can used the traxas leave a gap of little less than 1/4" no washer needed
|
RE: shockwave 36 problems
alright thanks
still waiting for josh21 to tell me how to make my sw36 go buckwild |

RE: shockwave 36 problems
you first need to fix your flexshaft!!! I broke my first two flex shafts before i figured out that it was binding on the strut. loosen up the strut and then get it to where the shaft won't bind up on it. I heard traxxas fuel isn't very consistant. I use odonnel 20% and it works perfect for my boat. is your boat pretty slow or something??
