RE: Lets see your ULTRA SPORTS !!!!!!!!!!!
Well, here it is. 3 weeks worth of gluing myself to wood, burning myself with a covering iron, inhaling balsa dust, and working my fingers raw cutting designs out of monokote. Here's how it turned out, and pictures from its maiden flight today. Model features mechanical retracts and flaperons, you can see a few pics where i did full flap approaches, but the problem is it wouldn't settle with the flaps down... it just wanted to FLOAT! Only way I could get it down was to do a no flap approach. Not sure how to remedy it. On with the pics I suppose

RE: Lets see your ULTRA SPORTS !!!!!!!!!!!
sweet job, looks great,,, Love how it looks witht the retracts up,, I had to take my retracts off my Us 1000 and US 40 because our bumpy grass runway just beat them to death,, I miss flying off the nicely paved road but I do like or spot,,, hopefully we will ge the money as a club to eventually get it smooth, its a lot better then it was 4 years ago but there is much work to be done,, and then maybe retracts can once again be used.
Looks great and glad to hear the maiden report.... AWESOME !!

RE: Lets see your ULTRA SPORTS !!!!!!!!!!!
I've got a (probably dumb) question about engine choice for an Ultra Sport 60. Most of the recommendations I've seen suggest the OS .75 AX for the US60, and I'm wondering why not an OS .91 FX - it's lighter, more power, roughly the same size and only a little bit more expensive. Is it too much engine for a US60? Or something else that makes it not a good match?

RE: Lets see your ULTRA SPORTS !!!!!!!!!!!
Here is the US 1000 I picked up at Lebanon. Glassed fuse, Robart gear, and ST 3000. I haven't flown it yet, but it looks like it should be a lot of fun. I did run it; starts easy and pulls really hard too. I'm really liking the looks of that 1.60 FX though. If the ST turns out to be as big a headache as everyone here is saying, I might have to pitch it for the OS.

hey guys, i bought a rtf ultra sport 60 that appears to be on the heavy side. does anyone know what the original weight is supposed to be. also, i think the weight has come from from the wing (with mechanical retracts) which has been rebuilt. does anyone know what the weight of their finished wing is?
thx, david

this US 60 i bought weighs 9 lbs. i think the wing is the culprit. i'm tempted to build another wing and lighten this bird up. does any one sell foam cores for this size? the current wing was rebuilt so heavy i think it could be used as a bridge[X(].

I have the US 1000 and the US 40 and the wing is designed heavy on both also, but I think its the wing weight that aides in these birds flying so well, very stabile, and flys like a bullet, it also is extremely durable.

RE: Lets see your ULTRA SPORTS !!!!!!!!!!!
This is my Ultra Sport. Built it when I was 20 and was my second glow plane after a sig kadet senior. A bit freaky to fly for a first aileron plane but thanks to the tutelage of my Uncle (who got me into the hobby at a very young age) I am now sweet with it. Apart from TODAY when depth perception got the better of me and the plane clipped a pine tree. Lost the left half of the wing from the main gear outwards. So i will be ordering the appropriate parts from great planes and fixing her up. A really great smooth flier. I have an OS 61 fix on mine spinning a 12x8 APC scimitar prop. Just great and pleanty of poke up top thats for sure. I hope ya'll like!

RE: Lets see your ULTRA SPORTS !!!!!!!!!!!
Cheers bro! It was a christmas/birthday prezzie from my uncle who lived in Kuwait for several years upon his return to NZ. So yea, was from oversas. Never seen them for sale round these parts but you can bring them in via tower hobbies for quite a reasonable price. Its a great performer I really like how this plane flies. If I built it again I would go tail dragger (NZ airfield are bumpy and the nose wheel always goes out of alignment), and put dual aileron servos in the wing.

RE: Lets see your ULTRA SPORTS !!!!!!!!!!!
I built it about 5 years ago and flow it pretty study since then. I have had my share of engine outs, but I made the decision that I would get it on the ground as quickly as possible when I seen one was out. It has always taken visual identification of an engine out, as it has very few bad habits.
It is powered with 2 old OS-70 four strokes, they are old now, but were new when I built it. I fly it with a JR radio. It has 7 servos. I built a box that is attached to the main spars and squared to the wing. I guess I got lucky the way it turned out, as it flies super. The black nose is a spinner filled with lead shot and I drilled it out until it was balanced. Other than that, it was built stock. Here is another picture. If I get it attached.

I have a US 1000 with a Quadra 42 as a taildragger which I would sell to finance another scale warbird. $300. Possible delivery to Indy, Cinn or Louisville for gas money.

Here is mine on the day of the test flight, it flew perfectly. OS .75AX, Robart mechanical retracts, Futaba 9C, covered in Sig Aerokote (yucky) and Monokote.
I don't know about the rest of the world but it's been windy as heck here in KY so far. From the high gas prices and the wind I haven't been doing much flying.

Thought I'd put up a couple of more pics. OS 91FX two stroke, 3-DX Hobbies retracts, flaps. Minnflyer recommended the flaps and retracts - excellent advice.
