This is the plan for my US40 kit. This will be my first covering attempt as well as kit build.

Any suggestions on the covering plan will be appreciate. I have the heat gun and iron tool from Tower.

Mike, have you seen my covering videos? That is an ultra Sport wing that I covered. So pay attention to the first video where I covered the belly pan. That and the wingtips are probably the trickiest parts

Cool Speed,,,, I have a US 40 too which I had a OS 70 4 stroke on it was fast but it wasn't doing 140 by any means, it wrecked one day so I haven't put it back together yet as I have way too many projects,, I will though, I'm hoping after my Twist Triplane experiment and my mustang build I will get the 40 back together,,, I love my Us 1000 and I loved the 40 size too.

Just completed today except for my AMA numbering on the wings and some trim on the bottom of the wing. Will maiden when it gets a little warmer in my area. In the nose is an Enya 45CX with a tuned pipe, 12 oz Kraft Hayes tank, 1000 ma battery under the tank, mechanical retracts, S3151 servos, wing modified for two servo bays, carbon fiber on the main spars; all who know the way I stress planes it's a safety feature for me and weight comes in at 6 lbs even. Found the Kit and the Enya 45cx new in box on RC Universe, what a great engine................have about 5 used CX's on my shelves.

Hey frank, that is one nice model..you would not need to have to come in with a retract failure.

Cheers, Falco

Hey Falco:

Thanks for the compliment. The Ultra Sport is a great flying ship. Never had a retract failure and hope to never have one.

Thanks,
Frank

Hey Kamakazie, Nice Job I can see by your hanger you like things to go fast as most everything I looked at had a tuned pipe on it LOL, I was going to get the Patriot this year for my winter project, but got talked into doing a Mustang with 4 others for formation flying purposes, how do you like the way it flys, I also noticed you had the Sig cub and the King Kobra, I had both of those also but the 40 sized versions, the Kobra was a handfull I used an OS 40 on it and it would just snap roll all over the sky without me even touching the controls, it would flip over and smash into the ground on landing every single time[X(][8D] I think I over powered it and it was my first jet like plane, I also think I was trying to land it too slow, it needed to stay hot, so I always wanted to try the King Kobra. And I'm sure I will. or I'll just move to turbine jet of some kind. anyway,, nice hanger. keep on rockin the skys

Hey Waldo:

Yep......I do like fast planes! That's how I earned my handle way back in the 70's. I tend to stress the airframe beyond.........that's why I carbon fiber the main spars on all my ships!

The Patriot XL flys great, except for a flutter at high speeds on the rudder. The setup on the rudder linkage is weak. If you decide to build go with something much stronger. I was thinking about altering to pull pull.

I've had three Cobra's in the past and one kit on the shelf to build. The first two I had Enya 45CX's in the nose..........and sorta of self destructed. The last Cobra I mounted an OS32SX.................great combination, and actually much faster than the 45CX's, and better handling because of less weight.

That Ultra Sport will be my second. The first lasted 15 years and was lost last year due to a nubie turning on his transmitter.

Thanks for the compliment!

Frank

So, do you glue the Stab and and tail in place before you cover it? Or should you cover them first and then glue them in?

Glue first, then cover

Cover the corners between the stab/fuse and fin/fuse with 3/8" wide strips before the final covering to make it much easier

Nice ship! What's in her; engine, retracts, etc?

You've never flown one before? Great flying ship and will become your favorite. Had one for 15 years until lost last year. I just finished another and am waiting for some nice weather to maiden.

Default RE: Lets see your ULTRA SPORTS !!!!!!!!!!!

Been hard at work on US#2. US#1 was retired this past weekend after a long hard life. US#1 was a good ship. I build the fuse and had a foam wing made for it. Flew great. It was my 3rd airplane and took a beating. Had a mid air while practicing snap rolls. The entire middle of the fuselage was destroyed and had to be replaced. Eventually it gained so much weight from glue and half assed repairs that it just wasn't the same. Couple that with some vicious fuel soaking to the point where nothing would stick to it anymore (covering, repairs, etc) and it was time for a new one. Started work on it last night, got the right wing done, today I did the left wing, joined the halves together, and got most of the lower fuselage done. Hoping to finish major construction tomorrow, do the minor construction through the rest of the week, and cover it Friday for a Saturday maiden flight. Going to go for a Red Bull theme on it, similar to this:
