RE: Which Low Wing Trainer Did You Use?
World Models SkyRaider Mach II with an Evolution .40. Flew very nicely! Fast, responsive, all around very good first sport plane. Only other I considered was the 4 Star 40. Since it was my first glow pplane, price drove me to the Mach II - I figured I could buy two of them for the price of one 4 Star if I needed to!

World Models Rambler 30 with an OS 46 FX.
Since its demise (long story ending with a losing arguement with a steam roller) I now have a second Rambler 30 with an OS 52 in it. I feel it is a great plane. While it is a floater, it is reasonably aerobatic and can be quite fast.

the trouble with the Tharpe Venture 60 is that it doesn't teach you how to build! That plane just falls together perfectly....

Mine was a scratch built 25 size pattern ship which used a slightly thinned Combat Kitten control line wing and a scratch fuselage. It was awesome. The next low wing plane was a Super Sportster, also a wonderful airplane. The plane before that was a Midwest Stik with no dihedral. That was a great airplane. The transition from a Stik ( without dihedral ) to a low wing plane is seamless. Stiks were once very popular. It wasn't uncommon to see 3 or 4 at the field. I don't know why folks don't seem to fly them anymore. They still make Stiks, don't they ?

Hobbico Brightstar 40 with an OS 46 FX. Excelent flying plane and looks great in the air, have many many flights on it and both the plane and engine refuse to die. I wonder why they discontinued it since it flys so good.

Cermark Graduate with an OS 40 FX. Plenty of power, low rates, it's a kitten, high rates....look out! Very aerobatic!

My first low wing was called a luv machine. That was back in the early '80s. Nice to see the names of so many planes that bring back good memories. I too remember when the Midwest series of sticks was the sport plane to have. With no dihedral the coupling wasn't too bad. I remember spending hours and hours perfecting long, slow rolls with my little stick. It didn't have too much power or side area so you really had to know how to use the rudder to pull this off. The QBL's were also a favorite at my field. Of course, the pattern influence was very present at that time. So we had lots of Joe Bridi designs around. Good Times!

I started flying in 1978. I used the Pilot QB20S and quickly moved to the QB20L. Both planes were very rugged and dependable, in fact I've had several timespans away from modelling and have always gotten my "fingers back" by scratch building (from the original plans) and flying the 20L. I've probably built and flown at least five of them over the years.

Four Star 40 - What a great flyer that plane was...is. I moved out of state 10 years ago and left it to my nephew. It's collecting dust. Ten years later, I'm back into the hobby (I have six and four year old boys now) and 'training' again. I'm going to build another Four Star 40 as my second-second plane!
