I dunno if I mentioned this before, but two other nice options for cheapo frames...

Long 5mm CF arms on a Fiberglas frame for $40 shipped:

http://www.besthobbymall.com/night-h...aft-frame.html

And banggood has the ZMR250 CF in their US warehouse for $35/Free Shipping:

http://www.banggood.com/H250-ZMR250-...-p-933185.html

I figure it's not gonna be long before one of us is looking to get back in the air after a crash.

Let the crashing begin. After failing to solder that stupidly small part back on my esc I bought a couple more and got it maidened today.
Only a few test flights without the FPV gear or the Mobius onboard in case things didnt go to well.
Things went really well and now all the gear is on it ready to give it a thrashing tomorrow.
AUW is 540gr with all the gear on it and battery installed. Hovers right on half throttle and boy has it got some punch

Noel -

There's a thread for these on RCG; I assumed you already knew about it, but the common name for these used there is just "C250".

The GemFan props are like... the worst. Poor balance, off-center holes, poor efficiency. When I was flogging the 235s, we dumpstered them in favor of the HiModel props I linked to earlier.

Right now, the hot ticket is the HQ 6045 (for motors that can pull it) or cut down to 5" for those that can only handle a 5" prop. These are literally producing twice the thrust at half the amps in some combinations!

http://www.warpquad.com/magento/prop...tter5inch.html

Soma sez your DYS motors will run them on 2S, or on 3S cut down.

Great maiden! Now to get Brian in the air!

Not gonna happen soon... I'm saving my Hobby Dollars for the Taranis Plus due out any time now, and we have to replace our fridge. 3 weeks ago our main fridge, then a couple days ago the backup garage fridge died. I've been massaging and tweaking it to keep going til paypay tomorrow or day after. Any other discretionary funds between now and X-Mas will be going to prezzies for the wee beasties. I'm hoping my wife will be an "enabler" for X-Mas as she has done before.

Have you received the Afro Naze yet? What's your verdict? Assembly quality looks a bit cheesy from the photos; but then again, lead-free wave soldering always looks bad.

I'll probably suck it up and get either the DYS 1806es like Noel did, or if I can afford the extra $40, I'll get the Airbot Micro Titan 2204s. I'm prolly gonna forget the ultra-light build. I need an excuse to buy some decent 3S/2200s anyways; get the HDX450 out of mothballs. Whichever I run, it's getting the HQ 6045 props. If I get the DYS 1604s, Soma sez they'll pull the 6045s on 2S; cut down on 3S.

US - http://www.multirotorsuperstore.com/...045-props.html

OZ - http://boltrc.com/index.php?route=pr...%20Prop%206045

Europe/UK/Germany : http://flyduino.net/HQ-6045-6x45-CF-...2-CW-und-2-CCW

Paul lists an HQProp 6045 as CF Composite; but they look like just the regular HQProp 6045 Fiberglas composite in black:

http://witespyquad.gostorego.com/propellers.html?p=1

If they are really the HQProp CF/Nylon props, then getting the Airbot "Advanced" 2204s and these props from him is pretty much a no-brainer for those of us in the States.

Hate to hear of your refrigerator woes. I was just musing that the 20 years I've been in my home I've gone through 5 refrigerators, 4 dish washers, 2 clothes washers and 1 drier.

Good luck on your builds and you're right Christmas ain't too far off.

What to get me....what to get me???

Welp, I got sortof lucky; found a 14 Cu ft upright freezer for $50 that's "Jeebus, That's COOOOOLD!" but the fridge looks to be taking it's last laps, and I haven't found anything that doesn't look like a total dinosaur to replace it. So all our frozen food should be saved *knock on wood* but trying to keep milk or yogurt is gonna be a nightmare.

What to get YOU? How bout the Taranis X9D+ ? It's out, and Aloft has it: http://www.alofthobbies.com/radio-ge...ry-system.html

Mine shipped this afternoon.

Welp, I have a work order tomorrow... so gotta git to bed.

Peace!

Frogs are bad at tennis.

I think my Taranis is MORE than adequate for my use. Fat, dumb and happy I am compared to the lack luster Spektrum radio I graduated from. Perhaps a Taranis ++? Later on? I recall the "Horus" is the next step? Mebbe then?

A quick glance as the product sheet finds the upgraded screen and haptic feedback?

I'll be pleased to hear your impressions.

If you are going to p1ss off the fanbois on the forums if you are displeased will you PLEASE give me a heads up for that car accident?

Glad you found a freezer replacement and good luck on your W/O!

PS Noel do you have something to share with the class?

Yeah, I'm about 99% positive those RCX motors are made in the same factory, if not outright rebrands of, the DYS 1806es I linked to. I can tell you just by looking that the RCX frame you link to is made using the same design that the C250 frames we've been buying are made from; the blueprints are released under Public License, so of course the China factories are gonna glomm right onto a free design that flies this good.

I have my misgivings about the material yours is made from; it's pretty obvious that the ones we've been getting are fiberglas or carbon fiber weave pressure-molded sheet with polymer resin; it looks like the one in your pic is made of phenolic resin. Not nearly as durable, or as rigid; and usually used to hide the fact that the MFR is using compressed random-thread mat (like felt cloth) instead of woven-fiber fabric like the ones we've been getting. There's a reason they can sell it for half the price and still claim carbon-fiber.

I do, however, like their 263mm 1-piece quad... especially as a micro-photography rig. I see it as an awesome "middle-ground" for folks who want to fly acro and still take first-person footage of their flogging.

http://www.myrcmart.com/rcx-cf263-4a...me-p-7891.html

The legs are a nice add-on too.

Peace!

JS - Now THAT's what I'm talkin' about.

There's quite a bit of difference between that one and the $30 cheapies we're flogging too; I'm sure. Looks like a lot smoother surface; they're probably cut from much more expensive CF plate. But you know... I suspect that frame may ALSO be the same Public License design ours are cut from...

That makes me feel good about my purchase; if someone's willing to commit that quality of material to the design, and selling it in that upscale market, it must be pretty good.

Sweet.

Hi guys, been off the grid for a while as Ive been building, modifying and flying.

Converted the Q450 quad to CPPM input via a D4R-ii Rx. Nice not having so many wires running into the KK and another model running straight off the Taranis.
The only thing left to convert is the 450,s then Im module free except for my small BNF,s. I may even put them back on the DX6i.

Finally got around to putting the OSD on the spider quad. Man its so cool being able to see the information on your goggles. Dont worry Amber Im not getting rid of you
Waiting on the gimbal to come in and then that quad will be setup for its intended use. Aerial video.

Been having a blast with the 250 quad. Had about 20 flights with it and it really is great fun. No dramas with it yet apart from a prop that snapped mid flight yesterday
Picked it up, replaced the prop and off it went again. To bad I didnt have the Mobius recording at the time.
Im not 100% happy with the build so at some stage Ill be pulling it down and moving a few things around.
Spend 6 hours at the field yesterday and flew everything I have apart from the Tek Sumo which is waiting on a Rx. HK are really mucking me about for the first time ever. Paid for express shipping and 2 weeks later its still not here.
Anyway towards the end of the day I asked a guy if I could go up and try and video his plane in flight. Had a blast chasing him and the video was pretty good.
Didnt realize how high I was getting sometimes and a couple of close calls but we both made it back in one piece.
Anyway heres a few videos, hope everyone is well and doing some flying.

THAT'S how you do it!

Don't you love it when planes come together?

You've even inspired me to revisit OSD on my APM!

My build is coming along but lots' of stuff filling my time.

Prolly maiden some time next week!

Nice chase video; yup, it's just as disorienting as the last time I tried FPV.

Are you using MimimOSD or one of the other variants?

As for HK screwing up your order... Isn't BoltRC an authorized FRSky dealer? Are they horrifically expensive or summat?

As I mentioned; my Taranis Plus is enroute. Once I get the back cover off, I'll look into the new LCD and put up a hackability report. I think it's just a matter of deinstalling the backlight to install the new LCD; once they become available I'm 99% sure Mike & I can get you up & running on the "new wonderful". You'll just have to suck it up and live with the backlight being the one color; though we MIGHT could change what that color is for ya.

Hmmm... colors.

Are you using MimimOSD or one of the other variants?

As for HK screwing up your order... Isn't BoltRC an authorized FRSky dealer? Are they horrifically expensive or summat?

Yeah Im using the minimOSD. Couldnt get it to work in the beginning but learnt you have to power it first before plugging in the flight battery.
I usually order all my FRSky gear from bolt but added it to HK as I needed some esc,s anyway. Glad I found some afros locally otherwise Id still be waiting.
Mmmm still on about that screen 90% of my flying now is with the goggles on so never look at it anyway. Is it really that much better than the original.
Still owe you that APM. Next time Im down the P.O Ill send it off. Still debating whether to get a Fixhawk. Think Ill wait and see how they pan out.

Well, no... I don't look at the screen when I'm flying much either. But b was asking in the RCG Taranis thread a while back if the new Plus LCD would fit on the older Taranii; I researched it and found it would be a hassle. Not only because there was no ETA for the new LCDs, but because the hybrid firmware doesn't exist yet.

As I explained elsewhere; I used to dread having to program ANYTHING on my old 9X at the field because the LCD bothered my eyes enough that it blurred my vision. I am unwilling to go back to that at any price. Wayne offered me an [EASY] button; I took it.

Now my Plus is on its way; I'll tell y'all what I think when I see it! For now, I'm hacking the badunka-dunk out of my 9XR Pro. It now has a bright white daylight-readable backlight:

plus a few more mods which I think I've shown y'all already.

Joe likes the FixHawk; I'm waiting to see any of the variants survive the abuse an APM will generally take. As an engineer, I like that they stuck to the original design specs regarding shell and connectors. I figure the China parts vendors will have custom cable assemblies to fit every popular aftermarket GPS, Magnetomer and combo board for a couple bucks apiece anyways; who cares if you can't just plug in your favorite $16 Neo-6. If you're going that route, you should NEED to know what you're doing.

If you don't have plans for those busted ESCs, toss them in too... I'm curious to see how they're built. Feel free to rob any wires, connectors, etc. first. Just cut them and leave a few mm of insulation so I can see the original wiring pinout, or shoot me a pic before you unsolder.

Looks like everyone has some shiny new toys.

Love the mini Brian,

The Hex looks great JS, I've been pretty happy with the motors I've tried from My RC Mart.

Great vids Ingleburn, some nice aerial footage of the other planes flying.

Mnemennth - What!! There's a Taranis Plus now!. LOL, I ordered one last week and tracking show's it will arrive tomorrow - and its already obsolete.. doh doh doh doh!.

Been on a quad building Frenzy this week.

Here is the latest - a Stretched X650 F (standard size is 550mm but this one is closer to 670 mm) Getting 14 minutes from a 3S 5000 Mah but hoping for 20 minutes from the 8000 pack on the way.

Hope you are all well and great to see this thread still thriving.

Hey Rob! Glad to see you're still alive; I feared you'd been abducted by a hungry pack of drop bears or somethin'. Yeah, the plus is out... little more room for the software, supposedly better controls, and a 2 color backlight under a new LCD which is also supposedly much better than the original incarnations. I'll let you all know when I get it if it was worth the hassle.

Better save up your brew money, though, my friend... there is pretty concrete talk that the Horus will be "unveiled" at the Chicago RC Show in October, and on the shelves for Christmas. This is SUPPOSED to be pretty close to the final version:

I like it; though I wish the sliders were oriented to be useful for "pinch" flying; it's what I'm trying to learn to do now and I wish the upper data display were a bit bigger.

I was originally waiting for the Horus but weakened after a late night build session when ordering some batteries. Should have waited an extra week… story of my life!

Look forward to your opinion of the new one.

Definitely more accurate if you can master pinch flying, Years (and years!) ago, 1980 to be exact I had a new Kraft radio and also bought the huge plastic tray designed for it.

It looked totally ridiculous (like a peanut boy at a football game) but was comfortable and more precise.

I flew that way until my brother accidentally crushed the tray (flimsy brittle plastic) so it was back to thumbs again.

Yeah nice flyin, And by the way I had same thing with HK and there Bloody EMS Bull****, Dont bother paying for it now just use the Australian Express connection, ends up Cheaper and gets here within 10days.

They have Changed all there Shipping Terms and Conditions, so it Totally Not Worth Paying for EMS, as it doesnt get there any quicker, as they still use Honk Kong Post to send it.

Also Have you Flashe your DR4-ii RX's with the faster firmware much better for Quads ect

Yeah JS I learnt my lesson. EMS used to get here in 4 days and I needed the stuff quick so I chose that. Never again !!
The Australian channel takes less than a week to get to me being as Im in Sydney and thats where the shipments arrive.
Already flashed the D4R,s as I read about the frame rate being to slow to allow safe use of all 8 channels.
Havent seen any new videos from you for ages. You still posting them?
