Default Do I NEED an SE?

Alright...

Ive fown helis in the past, my most recent expereance is with a Raptor 50. Mostly just FF stuff, nothing too major as far as 3d goes.

With so many versions of the Trex out there, it gets confussing for me trying to pick a bird.

I am wanting to keep the toal for everything to about 800 bucks (USD). I dont think I can get an SE with everything (Tx included) for that much... But was looking for some reccomendations... The SE looks amazing, but is it really needed... Does it hold up THAT much better in a crash...

I just dont want to buy something and be unhappy with it after a month.. I want to get good components as well (401, etc). But I dont know squat about lipo's, esc's and brushless motors...

Any help (links to package deals!!) would be a big help.

if you are trying to keep your cost to $800 the SE is pretty much out of the picture. how about the SA version? it is an ARF and cost $200. add in $135 for the 401 gyro, $70 for a good tail servo for decent servos, $200 for a dx-6, $120 for motor and ESC. add in another $100 for a couple packs. that comes up to $825. of course, add in tax unless you mail order from out of state. i don't know how much difference you would notice in an SA and SE. Just take it easy and try to to break anything. unless you are very experienced and very good, you probably will not notice any difference.

most of the major mail order places have combo specials. check our heli-proz, ready-heli, hobby lobby, etc...

If your previous experience was with bigger nitro powered helis, I think that you are going to be in for a shock with the smaller, twitchier T-Rex 450 line. Moving up from smaller helis is easy. Moving down is a real challenge.
I highly recommend that you go with the SE. This is simply the best behaved 450. Put flybar weights on to dampen down the cyclic response, use training gear to more safely get a feel for the quick response, and have at it.

Yes, this means upgrading your budget a bit. But if you go for a lower end model, on top of the decrease in stability that comes with the decrease in model size, I think that you will be disappointed.

In my opinion the se will not feel any different to the alloy plated version for basic flight. If under a budget i would get the alloy version and upgrade later if you feel the alloy frame is hindering your fun.

Hey thanks for the replies, guys.

I ended up with the full setup... called in a favor to the hobby shop I used to manage, and got a real good deal on stuff...

Ended up with the 450SE, Dx7, HS-65's, 401/digital, eXtreme lipo's... the works...

I have flown the 450's, and while it didnt feel as stable as my old larger gas whirlybirds, it wasnt too much to handle.... Im just glad to be flying again. I'll save my more adventurous moves for the sim. haha!

Lipo's are however new to me.. I'll have to read up on them.. head and seen horror stories about blowing them up (when I raced RC Cars)

Thanks again, im sure I'll be around asking for setup advice.

I just ordered my SE, too. Got the same setup as you, but I'll be using my 9C tx. I think we both made the right choice!
