Hi guys,
I'm in the process of setting up a T-rex 450SA and I've watched all of Finless's videos ( BTW,thanks Bob they are great keep them coming
), but I still have what might turn out to be a noob question. In just about all the pictures I have seen of peoples setups, they have the ESC up front and the 401 on the underside of the boom. In the T-rex manual it said it can be done that way or if using a spectrum reciever you can put the ESC under the main gears to help with the cooling and place the gyro up front. Is there a reason that everyone ( at least the birds I have seen ) put the esc up front and the gyro under the boom?
I'm using the 35 ESC from align, a futaba 401 gyro w/ 9650 servo, futaba 6EX RX/TX, and Hitec HS-65 servos for the swash.. My other question is when running the servo leads, should they be run inside the frame like it tells you in the manual? It seems like they run too close to the belt and gears, and I'd be afraid that they might shake themselves free of the zip ties and start rubbing in there. Like I said these might be some noobish questions, but I'd rather ask and look dumb than do it wrong and shell out more money to replace silly things.. Thanks ahead of time guys.

I run my servo leads in the frame, if you tighten down the zip it won't come loose. Not to tight that you crimp the wire. My 401 is now under my boom. In a crash the blades took out my $130+ gyro that sat on top of the boom.

In my case the Align 35 amp ESC caused a lot of interference. I have a Futaba 72mhz radio. It is always good practice to physically separate the "power" package (batteries, ESC, main motor) from the "electronics" suite. (servos, receiver, gyro). I mean that only the servo lead going from the ESC to the receiver should go from one group of components to the others if you encounter interference problems. It is also a good practice to install a ferrite ring on that lead to filter out unwanted glitches. My T-Rex was setup according to the instruction manual (gyro in the front and ESC underneath the frame) and I experienced major glitches which eventually caused a crash. I then converted to Finless Bob's setup (all the power components in the front and all the electronics in the back), added a ferrite ring, and now my radio link is solid as a rock.
Good luck

I recently tried placing a GY401 up front on the lower plate of my SE. It didn't work well. There was interference from the motor that caused the gyro to lose it's heading and drift. Below the boom block is the best place to mount it, as it's far away from the motor...
