Default help with goo from self-stick covering!

I decided to recover an old trainer I have and I started pulling the covering off (it was that self-stick stuff). After several years of flying and then sitting in the hot garage, it is a gooey mess.

The covering all came off, but the stickiness remains!

I've tried, methanol, and acetone....neither with any succes.

Any ideas what else might work (and not damage the balsa)?

thanks,

David Soniat

Get some GooGone. Its an orange oil cleaner/degreaser. It will remove just about any sticky stuff. It will probably seep into the wood so use it sparingly. It has a nice smell to it too.

I have used clear pvc solvent for similar applications. The fumes will knock you out so be careful.

If you have any success let me know! I've got a Byron glass fuse that I put chrome sticy stuff on and what a mess to remove. I've tried a few things also with no luck, (desolvit).

try GOOFOFF. This is available at Wal-mart and Lowes. It will remove dried Latex paint but not hurt finish. My wife found this and I just happened to borrow her bottle for shop

Default Glue remove

Most of your Body Shop supply stors carry a product by 3M. It comes in an aerosol can.

Just ask for a contact adheasive remover.

Ok, i've tried the goof off (which is water based). absolutely nothing! didn't remove any.

i didn't try googone because it has oil in it. remember, this is on bare balsa. i don't want oils soaking into the wood.

i'll try some more things and let you all know.

Again, thanks for all suggestions. Just because they don't work for me in this situation, doesn't mean they don't work well in others!

Default Update

I tried the "no heat" covering solvent. That actually seemed to do a really good job. (it's purpose after all, is to dissolve adhesive).

i did a test spot and i'm letting it dry to see if any sticky residue remains.......but i can tell you that so far, it has worked better than anything else i've tried.
