Default Airborne Models ToughLon Covering.

Has anyone tried the Airborne-Models ToughLon covering? How does it hold up in the sun? It looks pretty tempting.

Thank You,
Willie B.

This link to Airborne-Models takes you to nitro planes.com. "Toughlon" film, the
covering material used on World-models planes, (which is also Airborne-Models)
can be found quickly through a Google search "toughlon covering".

Airborrne Models (misspelled) URL is http://www.airborne-models.com/Index.asp

I disabled the incorrect links by adding a hyphon (-) between the words.

I have two planes with Toughlon covering. GREAT. It seems to hold up better in the sun than the H9 Ultracoat on my Ultra Stick. And trust me, I know about sun. I live in Africa. Covering with Toughlon is also a breeze, as I found out after "landing" my Extra.

I think it is relatively cheap aswell!

It's priced at $9.00 to 11.00 per roll, it looks like a bargain.

I got a couple of rolls of it, including the 1" checkerboard. Used the checkers on the bottom of the wings and elevator on my hog bipe

It seems to be pretty lightweight. The instructions called for a "low heat" for the application, but I found that going hot worked much better. I'm still not sure If I'd use it to cover the entire airframe, but you can't beat the checkerboard stuff!

....lookin' sharp there, Mike...[sm=thumbup.gif]

I wondered how the stuff goes on around corners and wing tips, you know

....the "problem" areas.

I had tried it on some wingtips, and it seems to work fine if you use a Heat gun and stretch it as you apply it. I wouldn't suggest using the checkerboard for this, as it distorts pretty good as it stretches.

My first ever ARF is a World Model Sky Raider Mach II, covered with Thoughlon. But I have now experienced (after much flying with the model) that the covering has started to peel from the nose area. It's not just the peeling off which is the problem. When it peels off it leaves the printed pattern stuff on the wood but the clear plastic sheeting peels off. Now the problem starts you just cant stick this plastic film back with an iron and to atach some other covering you have to first sand off the remainder of the film from the wood before it takes the fresh film.
I have two new rolls of this material lying with me and I think I am going to trade it for some thing else and stick to Monokote.

WOW.. that sounds like the old Coverite Black Baron film of years gone past. The colored portion would stick with the grip of a gorilla holding a banana.. but the clear part would lift off with little time.

I too will stick with monokote

I think it's 36X72, but these old braincells may not be right. BTW, I've got a couple of seasons on the Hog Bipe shown above. The covering still looks as good as the day it was put on. Still got a bit of it and have used it for a couple of hanger rash holes in the checkerboard. Just a bit of matching up on the checks and you can't see it. Not the best stuff I've ever worked with, but then again, far from the worst!
