Default Is spackling compound same as hobby filler?

Hi,

I got a can of spackling compound designed to patch the holes on the wall for 1.00 at the dollar store. I discover that this material behaves exactly like the Model Magic filler that costs 5 times as much. They have to be the same right? If that's the case, why waste money on the more expensive stuff? Yes, you can use it with no problems. I used to use it all the time. Now I have started using Elmer's Wood Filler. It's pretty much the same as the spackling compound, but it's wood colored so it doesn't show through covering like the white spackling compound can. But either product will work great for filling wood.

Unless its the "lite" spackling compound, it'll add a lot of weight to your plane. Other than that, it's the same stuff. If you think it'll show through light covering, you can tint it with food coloring. One drop of brown in the whole can will give you a nice light tan "balsa" color.

Many of our "hobby" products are nothing more than repackaged commercially available materials. The light spackling compound/model magic is just one of them. Here are a few others that come to mind:

PFM glue from IMP is nothing more than E6000 at a greatly inflated price.

E6000 here: http://www.save-on-crafts.com/e600037ozsize.html

The "hobby" brand Aeropoxy is actually Loctite Hysol 9462. This is a great thixotropic epoxy that is very, very strong.

Pacer technology that makes Zap CA also sells epoxies that can be found at hardware stores for much less dinero. Their gell epoxy is very nice.

Well let me say that when I started out in this RC thing 22 years ago, I was taken advantaged by a local hobby shop owner. I asked about using epoxy I bought at Walmart and I was told NOT to use them. He said that his in store epoxy are specifically designed for RC planes and my planes will crash if I don't use the "right epoxy". I ended up buying over 10 bucks worth of epoxy that is no different than commercial ones. DP
