Hi, I am building a Balsa USA North Star kit, and right away I have noticed a problem. If someone has built this kit hopefully, you will have some insight. I have just laid out the ribs and have noticed that both W3 ribs are just a bit too long. I was going to shave the LE end back a bit, but thought I should check here first. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Colin.

You can notch the back side of the leading edge [no more than 1/8" deep] with a razor saw to slip fit the rib.
The biggest problem with this plane is the enormous amount of lead required to get the CG.
I've seen a pound of lead being used. This is ridiculous for a model of this size. Might as well build the whole forward section out of pine 2x4s. I never have understood why those who build this plane don't move the engine forward. The net result will make a big difference in how the plane handles.
Over the years I've seen 3 NorthStars show up at the field, [lead and all] and all 3 had very brief life spans.

Sorry for digging up an old post, but I have to defend the Northstar.
I have had mine for a couple of years, despite owning several giant scale and turbines, I would not part with it.
I run a 50 sx, the kit is built exactly to spec, and I have 4 oz of lead in the front of the radio compartment.
Build this plane correctly, and you will love it, it does not even need wheels off grass .
How many planes can take off from grass, snow, ice, sand ect ect and come down on the water, or visa versa? none that I can think of.
This plane is a lot of fun, but not intended for the novice, their Northstars tend to have"very brief life spans"

I have to agree with Cavendish. I have about 7 oz. of lead up front running a .55AX (up here at 'mile high'). She is fast off the water but then I'm used to Cubs and Astro-Hogs on floats. And really fast in the air but stable. However, you can slow her to a crawl without stalling. Still, not for the beginner.
There's a LONG thread about mods on here, many of them good ideas. I did, for example, add a water rudder to mine. Others have increased the height of the engine pod to get more prop clearance. I didn't but I might if I built another. The design is sound or it wouldn't be around for 20+ years. As Cav said, wheels, water, grass or snow.....it flys off anything. Not bad for $90 !
Good luck with your bird!

Laddie Mikulaskos DELTA's are AWESOME
The closest thing to the NORTHAR is a a July 2004 RCM called the ARROW. Do not confuse with the AVRO ARROW. HOWEVER, it too, was the best CDN DELTA of all.
Right now I have three differnt sizes of the FORCE ONE - 20" 36.5" & 60"WS
The ARROW - I made about 4-5 years ago. I put a .46 on it and it dosnt SCREAM - but it flies like a dream
Build 'em right and they'll treat you right.

My northstar is several years old now. If you build to specs and don't add "reinforcements", lay off of heavy glues it should come up to specs. The only change I wish I made was to put a micro servo in the engine nacelle for throttle control.

I too have a North Star that I am building, I am beginning to wonder if I will ever get it completed... I started the Build when I was about 17 years old, and I am now 45...
Hows that for a slow builder!! it's all framed up, All I really need to do is build a new canopy (Lost the original), complete the fiberglassing, finish sand it and cover... When it comes to building, I think I might have a bit of ADD... Now, If I could get that completed here in the next 10 years or so, I'll be doing good!!
Craig.

I built a N Star about twelve years ago and still have it. I put a OS FX 40 in it.
I moved all the servos one bay from the front compartment. Took four oz of lead to balance it.
The plane is covered with sig fabric and spray painted with K&B Epoxy the sames as the real one. Looks brand new.
Will be selling at the GI auction Jan 9th.
