olstoney,

That's one fine box you've got there. Is that a Slimline F1 fueler?

olstoney 09-17-2005 05:27 AM

RE: THE FIELD BOX FROM HELL! aka The Ultimate Field box!

Weasel Keeper,
Yes, it is a Slimline F1. There is a large size fuel dot housing on the left side to allow the fuel tubing to pass through easily with the F1 probe attached. The F1 female fitting is on the right, so when not fueling the system is closed and no air can get into the tanks. This has worked very well up to this point and installing an F1 female fitting on my other planes has simplified the process. Although pricey I just love that Kavan pump. It fills the 24oz Dubro tank in one of my planes very quickly.

I know this thread is a bit old, but it inspired me to build my own ultimate field box and now it's nearing completion. I purchased the Wal-Mart/Stanley brand rolling toolbox on sale for $19.95. The construction was pretty straight forward except for the custom made PVC "Y" connectors. Turns out the they don't make Y's that small so I had to modify (that's my name :D) two 90 degree elbows and secure them to with thick CA and #8 screws.

I'm building a Super Skybolt with smoke, so I needed a field box to pump/carry smoke oil and glow fuel as well. This was solved using an OR switch from Radio Shack to toggle between the smoke and glow pumps. The fuel jugs are the same 64oz Rubbermaid juice containers that everyone else is using in this post: one is for smoke, one is for 2 stroke fuel, and the last is for reserve 2-stroke/4 stroke fuel. All that remains is to run the plumbing from the fuel jugs to the pumps and make a lid for the battery conpartment.

Thanks for the inspiration!

Mods-R-Me . Looks like a careful job. Hope you enjoy using it. I,too, Have something similar...but changed the power panel to the inside of the box after watching the rain run down it one day.

Good luck

They do seperate for easy transport. Thanks to the the military PT program, here at Eglin, I have the muscles to easily lift both at the same time without seperating them :D.

Thanks USAF!

I have the same tool box that I turned into my field box. Im basicly using the whole top part to tote my transmitter and starter and my tools on the removable tray.. As you can see i made a master switch which turns everything off and on. When i first built the fieldbox i noticed it was a pain to pull around in grass since it had like no ground clearance. So upon studying the orginal design how how the wheels were attached, i noticed i could just pull the whole wheel off. I pulled both wheels off and reversed how they fit in the slot. It then raised the box about another inch or so. Since the wheels were sitting higher i had to put some small "legs" in front which is screwed into the bottom.
Had lots of troulbe with the hobbico fuel pumps so i went to the junk yard and stole a windshield washer pump off an old 80's volvo. Which is also a geard pump like the pumps at the LHS so i can put fuel in and suck the fuel back out of the plane.

I'm just curious if anyone has tried one of these 64oz. juice bottles as a fuel cell?

I happen to be going thru the refrigerator the other day and had on of these clear cranberry juice bottles was was almost empty and thought the lid looked to be about the same as a gallon fuel jug. I rinsed it out, dried it real good with my compressor and it looks like it will fit perfectly in the bottom of them Stanley box from Wal-Mart.

I had a couple of the plastic fuel-line fittings that go into some of the smaller fuel tanks so I just drilled a couple fo holes thru the cap of the jug and then put some GOOP to the fittings top and bottom to seal them. Looks like they are going to work out great for how I am going to run my fuel lines out of the box and without having to cut up the top tray.

Right now I have the jug sitting sealed with some old fuel I had lying around to see if the fuel effects the plastic. If it doesn't eat or soften the jug, then I think this could be a winner as far as a fuel cell goes - and for cheap too. ;)

Here's a couple of the juice jugs. The onewith no label and fuel in it is the one I'm testing

This one shows the plastic fittings that I have GOOPed into the cap of the jug

Just in case someone is looking for an alternative fuel cell,

Does anyone know if any of the big chain stores have anything suitable for this on sale, or who has the best price? I went to Home Depot today, and my local store didnt have much of anything to use. I searched Wal-Mart online, and found nothing. Thanks guys!

Here is my contribution. More on the smaller size, but with the same idea in mind, converting a tool box into a flight box. Fuel pump in one side and a micro power panel in the other.
