RE: THE FIELD BOX FROM HELL! aka The Ultimate Field box!
Sounds good, appreciate the wiring diagram. I figured the wiring out earlier as I work in electronics. Just had to think about it a bit. I'll start work on the new box soon!! Anybody interested in a Goldberg Monster Tote done up in Harley Orange and Black colors...???? :D

While not as fancy as some I've seen on this thread, here's a pic of mine. Fuel line runs through the box to the pump behind the door on the front. I keep the line coiled up in there when not in use. The transmitter and electric starter are kept in a compartment under a sliding door at the top of the box. Works well for a Sunday flier like me but I wish I would have made it bigger still. There is always something else to stuff in the drawer.

hey guys,
just got a box myself and wondered what type of fuel plugs you guys use? to go from the jug to the pump to the outside of the box. also, what type of fitting did you use on the jug itself? |

This thread seems to be a bit stagnant so i'm going to revive it !! I just purchased what I think can be the ultimate "Field Box From Hell" Picked it up at Rona for $79.00 usd. A bit expensive but in this hobby were not afraid to throw around a little cash now and again. I will be posting updates on my progress, should be complete in a few weeks. I plan on putting my fuel jugs and battery in the bottom (4 jugs fit perfectly) mounting my power panel and charging panel in the front. I also plan to make a brace for the top lid to support a flip up mounting system for fusleages when mounting wings. Here is a link to the Stanley site for more info.

RE: THE FIELD BOX FROM HELL! aka The Ultimate Field box!
Swixtt,
To be honest I have no idea yet how I am going to plumb the fuel lines. When I fly I usually have a 2 & 4 stroke birds on hand, so I am debating weather to use one pump with some sort of 2 way valve or use 2 pumps (one for each fuel type). I am just starting on the box today so hopefully I should have some new pics up in the next few days. |

RE: THE FIELD BOX FROM HELL! aka The Ultimate Field box!
I may be a bit of an old poop, but I would worry about keeping a lot of fuel next to a battery. At least I would make sure the compartment is well ventilated.

RE: THE FIELD BOX FROM HELL! aka The Ultimate Field box!
it doesn'thurt to be to careful , but I am trying to determine the difference from his battery sitting where it is sitting and the fuel tank in a gasser sitting on the CG next to the servos ?
CAP. PS I would say ventilaton would be a must |
RE: THE FIELD BOX FROM HELL! aka The Ultimate Field box!
I will be putting vents in the bottom compartment, and the alligator clips are temporary. I will be soldering the connections and covering with shrink wrap to prevent accidental arcing. Safety first !! any ideas how I can plumb the fuel lines ? I was going to try to get away with one electric pump and some sort of 3 way valve to select the fuel type (all nitro)

RE: THE FIELD BOX FROM HELL! aka The Ultimate Field box!
sounds good! i haven't done the 2 jug system yet, but have thought about it. i've seen here on RCU that most will plumb them to the wall of the box and then just manually take which fuel you want and insert it into the fuel pump. different colours for different fuel. then reconnect so it seals it from the air. seems simple enough to me. there are a few good ideas in this thread, that is for sure. if you have time, take a read back through it.
i presently used a 18ah battery from a UPS, bolted the wire connections and mounted my fuel pump on the outside of the box. i purchased a Slimline Boxer pump. so far, it works in my basement transfering fuel back and forth. haven't gone out flying yet, so that will be the true test. |

CAP. PS I would say ventilaton would be a must A lead acid cell produces hydrogen when charged, which can explode if ignited. NiCd and NiMH do not. A lead acid cell can produce a lot of current if shorted. The wiring might get hot enough to melt a jug and ignite the fuel. Several gallons of fuel is a lot of fuel. Field boxes are usually stored inside the house with fuel in the jugs. Still, with a little care it should be no problem. |
RE: THE FIELD BOX FROM HELL! aka The Ultimate Field box!
Thanks for the explanation, I always hated chemistry. I guess what I was trying to get across is gasoline as far as I now can ignite from static electricity. Servos must cause some kind of arching when the voltage flows through them. As most know , you should never fill up a metal gas can while it is sitting in the bed of your protected or unprotected truck. If I was you zio... check this thread to find out how most have done what you are trying to do. I DON"T USE electric pumps for the same reasons we are discussing.

RE: THE FIELD BOX FROM HELL! aka The Ultimate Field box!
Hey Guys,
My electric pump will be mounted on the oustside of the box, (pic later on) as I was cleaning the pump I realized something that RC-Captain just pointed out. Electric motors arc on the brushes as they run, my fuel pump was coated with raw fuel on the inside of the pump case because of a small leak at the shaft yet it has never ignited. Does this mean the vapours from nitro fuel are not flamable ? |

I cut a pc of mdf to fit over the jugs, great place for props and wing tubes. It pulls out easily for access to the lower area.

RE: THE FIELD BOX FROM HELL! aka The Ultimate Field box!
I would not advise on glow fuel being non flammable, but because you are normally fueling outside where there is enough ventilation (moving air flow), I believe thats why you have not had any incidents. Please just be careful and consult the manufactures of the fuel if needed.

Hey Swixtt,
I found these at central hobbies. There are perfect for the fuel lines exiting the box. I am going with only 1 pump and just change the intake line as suggested. http://www.centralhobbies.com/Fuel/f...gs/TET4214.htm Zio |

ziomarco, I'm glad you're doing this box. I thought about it myself, and it will be interesting to see your progress.

I actually have several boxes.
Electric has everything in it. Small glow has a hand fuel pump on one side of the box. Battery & plug driver on the other side Big glow has a power pump. Rich |

Hey Guys,
Been awhile since I last posted. I have done a bit more work on the box. The fuel pump and lines are in place and hooked up. The looping lines in the front of the box are for each of the 3 fuel jugs. one outlet is the pick up and the other is the vent line. All i have to do is disconnect one side of the loop then hook up the intake line on the pump, works great !! Also I and going to section off the battery and vent it from the rear, just in case. |
