THE FIELD BOX FROM HELL! aka The Ultimate Field box!

hummm... Sounds like a killer idea, however i do have one little concern. After a few years of having fuel in the container, will it leek or eat through the plastic. I hate to bring all the negativity to the thread, however i have had such catastrophes happen to me before.

Got my 1.25 gal bottle from Walmart. Pd 4.99 for it and it is sweet. Now I have 2 ??'s. Where is a good place to buy these fuel dots and is Fuel dots what they are really called? Reason asking I went onto Tower's site and did a search for fuel dots and what came up looked nothing like what was pictured.

Sorry to sound stupid, but would just like to know.

Thanks much in advance.

Billie,

Is you field irrigated? I can see what I think are sprinklers in the background of your initial post . . .that is cool . . .must make for a beautiful field!

Just one ditch that runs through the middle. I have found that one ditch many times! I have moved to flying at a local field now. I just like being around other flyers. The field was great for learning though.

My 12/24 Volt Field Box

1 Attachment(s)
I have been inspired to build my own BH Box. I have taking the ideas from different boxes on this thread to build my box. My box has 2 12-volt batteries inside. One battery is powering a Hobbico Quick Field DC Charger and the other one powering a Hobbico MicroPanel. I have both batteries connected to a female banana clip setup to power my Dynatron starter at 24 volts (this thing can turn over an old Buick!). The toggle switch will complete the connection between the two batteries. During normal operation, I leave the switch off so both power sources are separate. I can connect my starter to the MicroPanel to start my small glow planes at 12 volts. But, when I need to start my H9 Super Cub with its gas engine I flip the switch, plug in my starter and crank that baby up! I will be adding a glow fuel cell once I find one like Buz_bo has. The bottom will be a little heavy, but, heck it is on wheels so who really cares. I hope to have this finished for this weekend. What you see here only took 2 hours. This field box will be great! Thanks for the great idea Billy. Also, thanks to the others I have stolen ideas from. :D

Well I found one at Home Depot and bought it. I also found a one gallon fuel tank that fits in the bottom without cutting the tray. Did you guys see the same rig in RCM magazine?

Which month? I stopped reading RCM about 3-4 months ago. Liked MA better.

The 2 batteries take up about half of the bottom of the box. I think that by using the two 64 once jars I can run with two different fuels (2 and 4 stroke).

I did do the cardinal sin, measure once and cut once! Should have remeasured. Had to cut just a little sliver of the bottom tray for my electronics. It won't make the tray flimsy, but I should have meassured TWICE. I am about a 1/4 of an inch off! GRRRR!

thanx!

Bill, and the rest of the gang here, yodaman!
I picked up one of these B&D crates from Home Depot on the weekend and have started planning what I want to do to it. I had considered the fuel in the bottom and the power stuff in the top, but after seeing some of the ideas on here it seems to make more sense to have the power in the bottom with the fuel and electric fuel pumps.
Here's my question, I would like to incorporate both 2-stroke and 4-stroke glow fuel in this unit and was wondering if there is some sort of valve or switch i could mount on the outside of the box that would let me hook up the two fuel sources in parallel and utilize one fuel pump? Then i'd have my fuel exit the box at one location and just switch from 2-stroke to 4-stroke fuel, etc. I'm thinking that I'll proably have to have one pump for each.
Anyways, thanks again to all for their creativity and ideas on this thread! Good stuff! :)

Good Idea

I was thinking the same thing. Check at Home Depot, you should be able to find a small enough valve to do this. I have both fuels in the bottom of the box using 2 Rubbermaid 64 oz jugs. They were about an inch to high, so I boiled some water (actually it was after I had finished cooking some corn on the cob) and heated the bottles to push it down about an inch. They fit nicely. I may go back and use that idea. Will let you know if I find anything at HD or Lowes.

Lee,

This is what I am thinking, to avoid any valves, etc. Let me know if you see any issues.

OK, run a line from each of the fuel jugs to the outside of the flight box. Then also have an 'in' and 'out' line with those 2 connections that go to the fuel pump inside the flight box. The line marked out will always go to the plane from the fuel pump and the connector marked 'in' will run from the box to the fuel pump. Then to pump 2-stroke fuel you run a 'jumper' from the 2-stroke connector to the 'in' connector. the 4-stroke connector just stays plugged. vice versa to pump the other fuel. I'll do a sketch to explain what i was thinking. Hope it makes sense. The goal is to pump from 2 different sources with one pump....and to KISS of course. :D

Just make sure that there is a tight seal to avoid leaks. Looks like that should work without a problem.

electric fuel pump

I think so too, I'll post some pics when she's all finished.

Here's another question, can i just splice into the connections in the power panel to hook up the electric fuel pump so i can have the connections hidden and use the switch on the power panel to control it without using banana plugs? If I do, do I leave the fuel pump switched to 'fill' and then let the 3-way switch on the panel control if from there?

Yeah, I saw the pic in RCM. Billy, too bad it wasn't yours :-) Maybe if you lived closer .....

It is in the mag (July?) with the beautiful J-3 Cub on the cover <grin>

Have any of you had a problem with this box tipping over? Especially with the airplane stand arms in place. That is the only thing that scares me.

DrDeath 06-06-2003 07:32 PM

First time out with new box

No tipping. I was able to bring my box out today and use it for the first time. It has been raining here for what seemed like 40 days and 40 nights. Thought about taking up RC arking! Anyway, no tipping and it performed great! I didn't strap it down totally on the way home and the wheels slid the box onto its back. Great news, there was no spillage in the bottom! Will put pictures of the inside up later. I used two Rubbermaid 64 oz bottles and sealed the snap tops to the bottom top. Everything is sealed pretty well.

Good Luck building.

Yeah, I know what you mean about the rain, not far from you. Where do you stick your radios? I bought one today, but don't know if I want to keep it.

I put my transmitter in the top portion under the tray in foam. Works real well.

Where can you get foam like in a gun case or transmitter case? I have an RD6000 and a VG4 and have to carry both radios because I am still training. It takes a little more room and since my 8 yr old daughter wants to start soon, it will take the same space.
