i have heard of using either acetone or 70% isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol. although never had the guts to try it on one of my engines woed is that the alcohol works better than what the acetone does. but in the end you still need to do a really good job on the rebuild.

Naptha works really well for removing the staining left behind by many nitro fuels and ARO's.
I had a friend put ARO in a fuel tank on my rustler and no matter what I flushed it with I couldn't get the red staining out of the tank. I tried denatured alcohol, acetone, paint thinner and just about every other solvent I had laying around the house until I pulled out the naptha and found that it immediately removed all of the red staining left by the ARO.

Laquer thinner is what i use for my engine work. If you let the engine soak overnight it will loosen and remove even 20 year old castor gunk. Just don't put any plastic or rubber parts in it.

woa, I just used water on my engine (I used the "jet" setting on my hose)! But I dried it out really well, and blasted it w/ the air compressor to make sure it was dry, then I used a lot of after run oil to lube it up...but then again it was easy to dry b/c the engine was dissassembled, the bearings still spin as good as they ever did and there's no rust ( andI did it like a week ago)
