Default 3.3 vs. 2.5r

I just acquired a revo 2.5 really cheap, but the 2.5 motor was worn out. I have a Revo 3.3 that i am planning on racing soon, so i got this second one to bash around the yard. Is there any reason whether or not i should choose the 3.3 over the 2.5r, or the 2.5r over the 3.3(prices set aside)?

3.3- better chassis more stable, more powerful motor(but its harder to maintain imo), 5308 no reverse better 4 racing
2.5- cheaper, decent engine (more reliable than 3.3), more shells avaliable, dont need batteries for the reciever

I think he's only asking about the engines.

I'd use a 3.3 engine BUT the 2.5R is a bad little booger when properly tuned. I have both engines and they both run very hard and I give the 3.3 the edge since it has a bigger piston and makes more power.

Is there a noticeable power difference between the 3.3 and 2.5r(properlly tuned)? I have heard guys say that when they race on tight technical tracks they prefer smaller engines. Would that matter with these two?

The 3.3 has more bottom end torque as it is a larger displacement engine.

Your answer would of course depend on your driving habits, and how you intend to use the truck.

All things being equal including price the 3.3 would be the way to go. As mentioned it really is going to depend on your driving habits and what it is you want to accomplish with the truck. If you dont need the extra displacemnet of the 3.3 then why pay for it. You will save cash with the 2.5's thats for sure. Are you stuck on getting another traxxas motor? Why not look around at other motors? There are plenty of fish in the sea for your truck y friend so dont shoot yourself in the foot by wanting only traxxas motors.

Well the main reason i wanted to stick with the TRX motors is the traxxas trade in program. It would only be $100 for a 3.3 which is why i said price didn't matter. If i were to venture out into other engines then i would have to consider the pricing. What engines would you suggest for a cost concious person? I would really like to keep the pricing around or below $150, but i may consider paying more if there is a completely sick motor that everyone will stick by. My main purpose for this truck is going to be bashing, because i have a stock Revo 3.3 that i plan on racing. Is there any difference between the 2.5 and the 3.3 on the top end?

Im pretty sure the replacement program for a 3.3 is more then 100... I think 100 is the 2.5 and the 3.3 is more like 120... I know most of the time you can fine a 3.3 cheaper on the net then what you can get from the program with traxxas. I would just browse around look at what the guys locally are running, ask opinions on patrons at your local hobby shop. get some real world experiance... read around on reviews with the different motors and narrow down accordingly...

yes the 3.3 is in general more powerfull then the 2.5 throughout its powerband. However like stated before the 2.5 can scream and is a great motor none the less... Just depends what you want to get out of the motor..

The 3.3 is like $110 and the 2.5r is $85. I've posted around that i'm looking for a good used motor, but i'm really jittery about buying just a used motor. I know alot of guys upgrade from perfectly good motors, but i also know people who run their motors ragged before they upgrade. I've had no problem buying used trucks, but i'm just really scared i could get burned easily buying a used engine. And basically the whole reason i'm posting here is so i can get you peoples opinions on what you are running and your real world experiences.

Well its also going to depend what your puting it in. Ihad a 3.3 on my tmaxx's and my revo and loved em. Ibig blocked the revo and wont be going back. What about a wasp? Iv heard good things about the OS .18 TM and .21 TMbut never used them before. You can get a new 3.3 on ebay for under 110 and then you have your old motor still.. the traxxas motor swap needs to be cheaper to be worth anything. http://cgi.ebay.com/TRAXXAS-3-3-MOTO...item414a82febb bid bid bid you can get a great deal if you want a 3.3...

In power the revo 3.3 has much more power and with much more power your racing performance should improve substantially.

BOTH engines are great ones. The 2.5R is bad azz with some additional mods done to it. I have one that I drag race with and it uses a "TURBO" plug button and that woke it up even more. I know that you are interested in outta the box stuff but don't count the 2.5R engine out. I mean after all, it did come in T-Maxx's and such and carried them fairly well. The 2.5R and 3.3 both carry the same crank and rod. I would just go with the 3.3 for what you wanna do though. The 3.3 is definately a beast of an engine and again, especially modified. I have some neat things for my drag race 3.3 that uses a dual turbo plug button, a custom billet piston/rod and now a newly designed billet rod that is being built as we speak.

Here's a short video of my 3.3 engine in a OFNA CD3 car without the dual plug button on it.....just the standard head/plug and it gives some of my friends high end .21 engine

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1u7gtgyvR5c

Here's a pic of my 3.3 with the dual plug head.

+1 on the turbo plug button. The 2.5 or the 3.3 would be insane compared to stock if it does what it did for my Picco. Took my .28 to the next level with an O'donnell plug in it and man, does it hual butt! IDK why they are not used a little more widely.

That some neat stuff, Mr. Davis!

The engine doesn't have problems with heating with that head? The cooling surfaces are greatly reduced. But tell me some more about this "plug button." I've never seen a 2-stroke motor that used 2 glow plugs.
