In the up position, does the front landing gear turn with your rudder, if so, hope you have seperate channels. I may be looking at your pics wrong, but you have your front tire locked in the straight position when up. My front retract works with my rudder. In other words, my tire turns either way when I use the rudder (in the up or down position).
Yes, I did consider skinny dip and even tried to find more info, but what I found was not what I wanted. Mirrarchrome will dull a little so that it does not look like chrome. But it is the best finish I have found but the worst to work with on such a project as this. Other projects and surfaces would do better. I am not trying to sell you on the Idea, just leting you know that it was tough for me because I am not the best painter in the world. With the clear on the alum..... it will not scratch or dent as easly as other products. Just my opinion.

hello gary .
i have a pull pull system on the nose gear , so in the up position the wheel is free and sit in a house i have build for it .
yes the front and the rudders work on the same channel but not with the same servo .
your main gear , from who did you get it ??

RE: Don Smith B-24 build pics
Cobi, Looking at the nose gear pics I have a few questions. Will the links the raise and lower the gear over center and lock? If it does not the weight of the plane will try to retract the gear. I also noted that the mount you have for the nose gear assembly does not look like it will hold up to a 45/50 pound plane with a rough landing? If you look back on the first page I made all of my gear mounts out of 1/4 ply wood , I even made the fuse former out of 1/4 ply. Having built the smith b-17 and making some not so nice landings I have learned the hardway. I did also note during this build that the wing saddle is very weak. I extended mine by two formers front and rear and doubled it with aircraft grade ply.

hello wes
look at the draw , when the nose wheel is down he is mechanical locked , only the servo can release it and all the landing power is on the fuselage and not on the servo .
all the nose gear aera is forced with hard plywood and fiberglass but it is flexible enough to absorb any hard landing .
i have tested this and it is working very good .
cheers - cobi

Out of curosity;; what rear turret are you using. What I received from DS four years ago must have been for a 101" it did not measure to be to scale for his 14

Gary, I also had that problem. I called him and ordered an extra nose turret dome. I am building mine with a emerson nose and consolidated tail turret.

Glad you was able to get one from him, I tried to get another one but he wanted me to buy the whole plastic parts kit. So I made plaster of paris dome and vacumed my own. Took some time to do and it gave me some experience on vacume forming.

RE: Don Smith B-24 build pics
I have talked with don smith several times and have ordered alot of his plans. He knew me by voice when we would talk on the phone. So maybe thats why he sold me just the single part. He also sold me some single plastic parts for my b-17. he no longer sells plans if you didn't know. You can no buy them through precision cut kits.

Wow Gary and Wes! Thank you for posting these pictures. Your B-24s are amazing.
I just finished building a B-24 from an American Eagle kit. My detail is no where near what you guys have done. I really appreciate what you've posted. This summer I'm purchasing the B-24 1:9 scale Don Smith kit from PCK. (I love four engines) I hope to at least come close to the detail work you've both done. Nice work.
Thanks again,
Ben

If you don't mind me asking, but did you get your mains from CJets. If you did, did you have trouble using one air tank for the retracts. I must have a problem with a retract cylinder on port side. I've worked on it for several days and I am now having to use two tanks and two valve syatems.

I used century jets on the mains with robart lower legs. I have one large air cylinder in the rear of my fuse. I have only cycled the gear a few time but never really had a problem. One gear always retracts 60 to 70% before the other gearstarts to move. In most of my findings the is how the full scale worked.

Wes,
Can I ask you how you did your panel lines? They really look good. Do you plan on adding rivets that are flat or textured to the panel lines?

RE: Don Smith B-24 build pics
I taped all the lines with a fine lione tape. I then used spot putty to fill up to the tape, sand it down flush with the top of the tape. I will add raised rivets with canopy glue with a few drops of silver paint in it. I will also burn in flush rivits with my soldering iron and brass tube. I will do this all before painting.

You do know you guys are crazy building 4 engine heavymetal don't you! Great builds!
JollyRoger - My uncle also flew for the 90thBG, in the 320th SQ. I built a 1/12 scale B-24J in the Jolly Roger livery. www.b24project.com
Here's some more inspiration.

RE: Don Smith B-24 build pics
Hi Wes,
This is incredibly ignorant, but since I am relatively new to the hobby please forgive me. I see that the window panes for the bottom of the nose turret are not in place but the frame is installed. In regard to the "glass", what do you use for material and what techniques do use to install them? I will eventually be graduating from my fledgling factory vacu-formed canopies and other glass.
By the way, great work on the liberator, I'm extremely jealous and impressed.
Thanks,
Lloyd

I just use the formed plastic from the plan supplier. I then inlay the plastic so it is flish with the wood. I will then fiberglass the plane, even over the plastic. I then cut out all the windows leaving just the frame work. I just cut and glue in clear plastic for the windows.
