I have had many loss of an engine with my twinstar with the 25fx engine's and never once crashed, but all had altitude, i had one dead stick with my c-160 with two os32sx engine's for power and it was on takeoff about maybe fifty feet into the air, just a guess on alt. but it went into an uncontrolable spin and crashed, when i went to pick up the pieces i could not find it until i looked in the water, i think the wing hit first kind of at an angle as there was a foot of mud under the water i think the wing went into the mud and just lay flat upright in the water, the wing was twisted and took out the front bolt that holds the wing on, it just slid over to the right side a few inches, also there was a small hole in the fuse, not much got wet and it was an easy fix, so my friene fixed it for me, that was last fall and i look forward to flying it again, as far as flying in the air the twinstar does not even come close to the nice way the c-160 handles in the air also i have never had a loss of an engine in the air while on cruise, if so i feel that it would not have been much of a problem, maybe this year i will find out, i try to take a different plane each day to the field, rollie

Hey Rollie, I missed your previous question. No I haven't looped it yet. I have done a couple of rolls and a split s. Not the prettiest roll but a roll. Hopefully will be able to fly it again this week-end.

Hello all C-160Transall fans, Sir FlyAlot here. I am Capt. Crackup's flying buddy who just completed building and test flying my camouflage Transall. Same setup with O.S. .25 LA's. Love them so far. All went well. You are not going to believe this, but 2 clicks left Aileron trim was all it took for perfect flight. I was extactic, especially after I got it back on the ground. That was my first Twin engine plane. The only real adjustments I did the other night after my first flight were taking out some throws, and having to play with the throttle linkages to get the engines more in sync Tune wise, vice using so much mixture. One of my engines was using about 1/3 more fuel than the other. Played with them, and the needles are now set almost exactly the same, and they purr from the bottom to the top. I have run a total of about 8 or 9 tanks of gas through each, and they have not died on me once. (Knock on Wood). It's all about dependability, so tune em rich. ANYWAY, Capt Crackup said I held out on him once I showed him mine, but I came up with the running/landing lights after his was done, and just wanted to surprise him after that. I just bought an RCLIGHTS LED kit off of EBAY with 5 lights, 1-red, 1-green, 3 white. Mounted the red and green in the wingtips prior to putting the wings together, and put one white on top of the cabin, and the other two I mounted on the front of the wheel pants to look like landing lights. I hot glued a spring onto the side of a mini servo, attached a power lead to the spring, and the other half to the servo arm so when I activate them, the arm swings into the spring and makes the lights come on. It's pretty cool. ANYWAY, check out the video of my first flight at the below link, or just go to RCU Videos and look for C 160 Transall. Keep an eye open in the future, Capt Crackup and I plan on doing some Formation Flying pretty soon and will try to get it on film.. That ought to be pretty neat.

I had the same problem with my two OS-32SX, one engine burned just a little more fuel then the other but it always gave me the ten minutes plus so i leaned the engine that used more fuel just a click, on the ground they run great and holding the nose in the air makes you think your ok, one click makes the difference in an engine running great or a little off, on take off i lost the engine that run best rich, i never ever had a problem with it until i tried to get them both to use the same amount of fuel, each engine has it's own setting's and one may burn a little more then the other, if it is running really good, forget the extra half ounce of fuel, i run mine on 10x6 Windsor props with great result's and wont change it again, but that's just me

But I knew it was mechanical in the linkage, because they didn't idle very close to each other, and I knew my throttle linkage was identical on each side. SO, between a combination of bending linkage, and shifting servo arm holes, I finally got them to run up the same. I will definitely still tune them for each engine, but at least now they are mechanically close. Me and Capt Crackup (Skip) are both currently running 9X5's on our .25's, but after a while, we may give 10X4's a shot just to see how they perform. I am still nervous about flying the twins, but I guess as long as I take the time to make sure the engines are properly tuned, and watch my time, it shouldn't be a problem. These C-160's don't seem like the kind of planes that would fly well on one engine. I have almost got it in my head that if I lose one, and am not in some kind of wierd position, that I just plan on cutting the other one out and take my chances on a deadstick. Depending on the situation obviously. Let's just hope I don't have to find out. Thanks for the comments.

Where i fly it is a wonderful field, in the morning we fly on the salt flat and afternoon we go to the hot top, the salt flat is so huge that any deadstick as long as your within range which is huge, as you said just cut an engine but it would be nice with the alitude with plenty of room to see how it goes, on the twinstar i used one engine to get where i needed to be and cut it back to make my turn, then I brought it in without any problems BUT I lost my engine on take off about 30 feet in the air, never had a chance but it landed in the water with very little damage, she is now ready to give her another try, and like you said to make sure my engines are adjusted right

O.K. All C-160 Lovers, I have done it. I have completed my opening rear hatch conversion. It turned out great, and wasn't that hard, but it definitely took some engineering to get to look good, serve it's purpose (Drop a parachute guy), and maintain structural integrity. But it is done. Operates great, and looks good. I will test it tomorrow in the air weather permitting, which it should be. Will try to get some video. I am goint to borrow a buddy of mines camera that has zoom on it to get some better videos. I will also try to get my operating lights in the video with this better camera also. Wish me luck, and If anyone is interested, I can attempt to fill them in on how it was done. I am only excited about it because lots of people talk about it, but I am the first that I know to actually take the knife to it.
Safe Flying and Don't leave air above ya, Fuel on the ground, or runway behind ya, because none of that does you any good. Will make an entry tomorrow on my hopeful success.

I also have a c-160 with two OS-32SX engines, i thought your plane not only looked great but also had plenty of power and was an outstanding job that you have done to your c-160, very nice to see someone go the extra mile

Have you given it a thought about using a merle hyde soft mount, it take's 90% of the vibration out of your plane and battery, servo,s and recieve and fuse, i use them on every one of my planes now and people come to put there hands all over my plane and they always say, no vibration at idle or any speed, i just had a friend build me a lt-25 and that was 12-24-07 I fly it almost every good day and have gotten so much ski flyiong in this year, i am also going to order a mount for the lt-25 also for around 50 dollars and already i have broken a bold clean off due to the vibration, even electric airplanes and the smaller airplanes sometimes have more vibration then the larger planes, just a though as i use them on my every airplane and there is a total satisfaction 3 year warentee on every mount that he sells he does not advertise only word of mouth, most of the world chapionship pilot uses this mount and even if you do not fly alot it still save so much wear and vibration on everything in the airplane, if you buy just one you will never build a plane without using his mount, there are many imposters out there so make certain it say hyde mount i just bought two for my two ys-110 engines i am using on my phoenix twin, rollie

cool video chute drops are awsome. You should try a LEAPS drop now, A little HUMVEE would look good scooting across the ground after low approach and pull out. I was skeptical but seeing is believing.

Capt. Crackup and Sir FlyAlot you guys have really inspired me. [sm=thumbs_up.gif] I ordered my C-160 from NitroPlanes yesterday and 2 Thunder Tiger .25s. I just can't wait to get this thing in the air after watching your videos. I bought it just for the "Multis over McDonough" that we host at Henry County RC Club, about 25 miles south of Atlanta airport. This is the 3rd year we have done this event, last year Mac flew his B-29 and should be here again this year.
You guys should come up and we will do a formation demo. All are invited.
The event is June 23rd & 24th.

Hi folks, just got my 160 and the forum here answered most of my questions. Was wondering if a pair of OS 25 FX will fly with authority at 2200 feet above sea level.(lead balls here seem to be real floaters in vancover)This is my first twin but reading here has eased my fears. The local hobby shop gave me a deal on the plane / parts as he jokingly said I should pull a banner arround at the fun flys'. I'm open to any ideas / thoughts............BILL

Hi Bill. Congrats on your purchase. Don't get the part about the banner though. Anyway, It depends what you mean by "authority". I'm no expert, but I think the FX's will definitely make you happy, unless you plan on flying it like a sport plane like some people I have seen. Capt Crackup and I pretty much stick to scale flying with our .25 LS's, although he has done a couple of rolls and easy loops. There has been a noted problem with a wing giving way these models [>:], but the way we have seen some people fly them we are not surprised with the wing loading and wingspan [&o]. We don't forsee any problems. I really think your FX's will be great. We are turning APC 9X5's, and are getting ready to experiment with a set of 10X4's. I would think with your FX's, you could turn 10X5's. Will probably have to experiment. Did you see our Video's on RCU videos? Just curious if you saw my lights and rear hatch modification? If you are thinking about lights, it is best to do it during construction before placing the wings together. I also have the 160 and i used two OS-32-SX for engines, and glad that i did, i mostly run it at 3/4 throttle, now and then i do the longest nicest loop you ever did see, either way it is a nice flying airplane, the reason for the larger engines is sometimes with a little more power it saves fuel in the long run, i ususlly fly either half or 3/4 throttles most of the time and i always set my timer for ten minutes on all my planes as that is long enough for me to stand there, i put my 25 fx engines on my twinstar and i made no mistake doing so, they both fly great and both have really good power as well, specially on take off with the 160 probably 25 to 30 feet im in the air climbing out very well, and the sx engines run great as the fx engines also run nice to, rollie

I'm suppose to receive mine from Nitroplanes tomorrow. I will let you know this weekend. I would assume they are all the same since they are only made by one company, but NPs was only $189 $45sh. I received my Thunder Tiger .25s today from Tower for only $54 each. I have several TT .46 and a TT .61 and love them.

Hey Wes,
I fly one of my C-160s with OS MAX 25-FXs and the other with Super Tigre 40-GSs, but it has flaps, a working cargo door and lots of heavier things, plus I turn 4 bladed props on both models. 9x6s or 10x4s. Works great, flys just like a real cargo plane.
