HELP! best engines for Hostetler 310R?
What do you think would be the best engine choice for the Hostetler 310R?
Its a 33 LBS twin, dont want it underpowered.
Remember, I'm not working with huge cowls that you could loose an engine in, these cowls are tight.
I'm not pro-gas or glow, but each has advantages in this application. I could probably fit a larger glow 2C or 4C with out hacking up the cowls, i know a gas job would 'hang out the bottom' so to speak. Gassers are so reliable........but i'll have to hack up the cowls. I'm tired of pondering this question. I have one new saito 180 on the shelf, a one year old BGX 3500 that can be transplanted. What do you guys think? Sure would be nice not to have to buy 2 engines.
Top flights new 310 arf putts around happily on two .50's at TWENTY POUNDS!
Hostetler states on plans "for 1.80 to 3.0" but no refrence to two stroke or four stroke, gas or glow.
I'm open to sugestions........Give me reasons to your choices.
Thanks,
Ted

RE: best engines for Hostetler 310R?
I think your Cessna would fly well with engines much smaller than those listed above.
As I assume the stated 33 lbs. flying weight is including the engines, I think you could save at least 5 lbs by installing a pair of four strokes in the .91- 1.10 cu.in. range. They will fit easily into the cowls, will cause less vibration and therefore doesn´t require heavy engine mounts.
For comparison, My 117" span Aero Commander has shown good performance powered by a pair of OS 91 four strokes. Wing area is 1700 sq.in. Takeoff weight 27lbs
(I later made an electric conversion of the plane for enhanced reliability. Similar performance but unfortunately terrible "engine" sound)
