Default Bates B-26

Anyone built one of these before? Looking for sucessfull engine combinations. I think the plans call for G23s, but that seems alittle small for a 106" 40lbs plane.

I haven't build that plane but if you get no answer you might try over at RCSCALEBUILER.com. They have a forum for that designer. The real B-26 did have a rather small wing for it's size. Thus higher landing speeds, tricker to fly and deadly in the hands of an inexperienced pilot. Probably why it didn't last to long in military service unlike the A-26. Hope you post your build here. I'd like to see it.

Anyone? Not too many of these around. I found one build online that used G38s. So should it be 2 G26s or 2 G38s? The G45 is too big. Any onther suggestions?

the b-26 had the lowest loss ratio of any bomber. After the early problems with the nose gear and wing loading, the span was increased and the plane was a winner!!!!!

Dang! I was going to say that.....

Once WW2 was over, there was no role, nor any further need for it, so it was removed from service just like many other combat planes

My suggestion would if built light without alot of extra scale details go with the 23s. If build heavier with lots of scale goodies then use the 38s. Are you planning on cutting out the parts yourself or use a kitcutter?

Already have the plane. It needs alot of repairs. I doubt it is going to be light when it is done.

Then I'd go with the 38's. Post some pics and lets see what you have.

Type in Bates B-26 as a search. I had a thread about it myself some time ago. I haven't been able to start my own but there was some good info in the thread that may be helpful to you. I will watch as I hope to build mine at some point!

Kram,
I took a look at your old posts. Looks like G-38 are the right choice based on what everyone told you. I will post some pictures when I start working on the rebuild. I think from looking at what I have I need to rebuild the vertical stab, make the wing 3 piece, and fix the flap mounts. The guy who built it looks like he couldn't find the wing joiners (I think SIG makes them) and just butt glued the outer wing panels on the center section and glassed over them. Wouldn't have lasted through takeoff. The firewalls were held on by 4 #6 wood screws also wouldn't have lasted through takeoff. The flap hinges seem pretty weak as well. So some work to do, but the gear works and the fuse is straight. I'm thinking of using a wing tube for a joiner instead of the flat aluminum sig joiners. Once I get my Corsair done I will get into the B-26 more.

BTW where is Barboursville? I'm just outside of DC.

Huh, who knew?! I didn't notice that until just now. Barboursville is right outside Charlottesville. UVA, Thomas J., etc.

Food for thought... I have flown alot of twins and I have had a Ju-88 that was 40lbs,126" wingspan and I had two g-38's on it. I flew it and just was not happy with the engines.Just could not get them running smoothly together. I changed to 2 G-26. Those are really nice running engines. I put them on the plane and they flew it very well.
I am also flying a 132" wellington on 2 G-26's. I can take off at half throttle and fly at half throttle easily.
I even early on messed up my mix on the engines and had one stuck wide open ad lost the other.. I was trying to land it with one running wide open. I set up for landing figured I could run it into the tall grass and cut it off... As I touched the ground It was just not going to slow down enough...So what did I do ??? This plane weighs 31lbs.. I applied elevator and took off on one engine. retracted the gear and made 1 circuit of the field and belly landed the plane cutting off the motor with the ground... So a g-26 was able to take a 31lbs plane off and carry it. I would not attempt this on a daily basis... I just think I was lucky... I do have witnesses...

Nice planes FW37. Is the JU88 from Don Smith Plans? Looking at his website it shows 91s for his A-26 which is about the same size. Now I don't know anymore..... I guess I should check the balance of the plane to determine which engines will need less lead.

No its one I built from scratch.. before the Don Smith one came out.. My airfoil would be a little more forgiving that the one DS uses...
