Twinstar first twin?

RE: Twinstar first twin?
HiTech Man,
I have several twins including now a Seagull Dual Ace, a Cox Duelist and two Pica Duelists, a Cedar Hobbies Twin Stik, and a TF Cessna 310. I had a Twinstar, but not now.
First, I don't know how reliable the LA's are, but the 46AX is ultra-reliable. The 25's are good little motors, also.
The Seagull Dual Ace is a terrific airframe. I have over a hundred flights on mine, and just this AM, I picked up another one at my LHS to do a major kit-bash.
The Twin Stik is also a great airframe, but CH does not have any in stock right now.
The Twin Star is also fine. Stay away from the Duelist and 310 until later.
Hope this helps...

RE: Twinstar first twin?
The Twinstar is a good twin trainer. I put a pair of OS 40 LA's in mine...cheap and reliable. Even at 5280' they pulled the plane around well. Engine out performance allowed for safe return to the runway even when an engine was lost just after rotation. Twin warbirds will mostly rekit in this situation so don't think all twins are the same. All in all, a fun combination!

RE: Twinstar first twin?
I've only flown a few twins but the Twinstar so far has been the easiest to fly. Not only will it touch-and-go on one engine (either engine), it will take off from a stop using either engine. Admittedly, it prefers one over the other, but it WILL take off on either engine, even at 5000 ft ASL. This shows just how much margin is built into the airplane; it is friendly. I lost an engine on the test flight and didn't even realize it until the plane flew by and I saw one of the props stopped. The landing was uneventful.
It may not be as pretty or scale as some of the others mentioned, but everything is easy to access (no cowls to mess with).

RE: Twinstar first twin?
I have to agree with Tony. The Twinstar is a very easy plane to fly and get used to twins. I have been flying one for about 3 years with O.S. LA 40's and APC 9X6 3 blade props, very fast but easy to fly on one engine. I used to LA's just cause I had them and really didn't care how long they lasted as they are a cheaper engine with plain bearing, but they just keep on running and running. Just put 10 flights on my Twinstar yesterday!

I put two la 40s in mine I also changed the fuel tanks as it only comes with 4oz tanks. I put Sullivan 303 6oz tanks. I get an 11 minute flight. if you want to see how I did it go to the "Fuel tanks for Hobbico Twinstar" Forum. I posted pictures

I have a twinstar with 2 evolution .36's with 9x6 props. Plenty of power! I fly it more than my other plane (contender). I just wish the fuel tanks were bigger.

My first twin is the ASM Comet and it is not a good first twin(tip stall city) plus inverted engines which I will never do again.........I may put the engines (46 ax) on a Twinstar and have fun.....

RE: Twinstar first twin?
hey hitecman
I have the twin star with GMS 25s and have had few problums.
With the 25 you don't want to loose a mill on take off.
The airplane handels well on one engine as long as there is flying speed.
Good luck Jim

RE: Twinstar first twin?
As far as props go, I went with the 9X6 because it was recommended for the engine. You won't be able to go past a 9 without eating the fuse. The 9X6 on the .36 engines is awesome plane is airborne in 20 feet max! I do not have a clue when it comes to 3 blade props. I am saving that for my Top Flight B-25 LOL.
