Now that's cool!! [sm=thumbs_up.gif][sm=thumbs_up.gif]
Looks like the hiller XC18 and the later LTV XC142... Both proved the concept would work but were too complex to become viable.

Be sure to post your progress!
Cheers!

RE: Project: VTOL
Thanks, guys.
I want to let you know that my intent here is not to leave you hanging but rather to promote my upcoming article series in Quiet Flyer. Since I am under contract with them, I simply must be careful what I post until that particular part has been published. Once published, I can then update the VTOL page on my Web site.
I haven't seen most of the tiltrotor planes posted above so thanks for sharing that info. The inspiration for my VTOL design came from the Bell/Augusta [link=http://www.bellagusta.com/index.cfm]BA609[/link] Civilian Tiltrotor.
I believe that part 1 of my project will be in the February issue of Quiet Flyer which falls in between my bi-monthly column.

RE: Project: VTOL
Here are some photos that won't show up in my Quiet Flyer article so I feel that I can post them here.
You can see a different angle of my VTOL plane and also the issue that the E-flite G90 gyro gave me when used on the pitch control 150w motor in the back. The effect of the cheaper piezo electric gyro called "creeping" would make the motor speed change when the plane was still. This caused an undesired effect when used for controlling an ESC for pitch stabilization. A more capable (and expensive) gyro that I found to work very well was the JR G500A Rate Mode Ring Gyro.

RE: Project: VTOL
Greg,
I am very intrigued by your project and have been following it in the magazine. I've only seen the first installment though, and I was wondering when the next one will be published? I'm on the edge of my seat, and summer is fast approaching!
While I've got you, what were some of the major challenges you faced with the control systems you laid out for us in the first article? I imagine the next article will detail them, but it seemed like you had not finalized the control systems before you went to print. I'm hoping the delay does not portend of some setbacks in the project! Best wishes to you for your efforts!!!!
