Default 36% EXTRA 330SX

Hello!

I ordered a WH 36% Extra 330SX today from Tom. Could not be happier with ordering process! I have a new DA-100 that I plan on using for grunt and also will be utilizing a pull-pull setup with a Hitec 5955. I am looking for any advice or suggestions or hardware upgrades on this plane before I start. This plane will be my IMAC ship for quite a while. One last thing has anyone installed KS 1060 tuned pipes in this plane?

Please any comments . . .

Thanks,

Perry

Ordered mine today also. Putting in a DA100 with Johnson mufflers, pull-pull, 8611s for everything but the throttle which gets a 8417. Should be here by this weekend.

Very Cool! I will post my progress and I hope to see yours as well. I am curious about Johnson Mufflers. Do they have a website?

Thanks,

Perry

Perry,

Not that I'm aware of. The Johnson mufflers are the "standard" DA mufflers. I don't have any restrictions on noise at my field so cans or a tuned pipe are not necessary. Plus I like the sound of the standard mufflers unless it is a 150cc engine.

Perry,
Don't know if this will be of any help or not, but I've got the 330LX with a 3W-100 on cans.
For the hardware I used what Tom sent along with the plane, plus some personal upgrades.
The R/C Blimp CF tail gear, Air Wild cable fittings, SWB cable tensioners, MLP / SWB arms,
& MPI charge switches. No added weight to balance, batts in forward position.
Used all HiTec servos, for the programability(?). No Match boxes to add weight and cost.

Flier:

Great minds think alike, that looks almost identical to the one I flew 2 years ago exceot mine was a DA with 3w mufflers instead of a 3w with DA mufflers.

The only thing I would add is two more vent holes on the bottom in front of the two that are there to cool the front of the mufflers and also allow more vent air so the inside does not get hot after shutoff. I don't know if it's absolutely necessary but mine seemes cooler all around with more vents.

Nice plane.

I'm flying the same set up with a DA and JMB cans. I added a tunnel.
Love the plane and the service.

The more I see WH planes the more I like. What type of hinge gap sealing product is everyone using?

T. Bob has the right idea. Completely enclose the cans off from the inside of the plane because you don't want the heat going inside the fuse. Plus you will get much better cooling by forcing all that air out the bottom of the fuse. I also intend to close off the fuse with 1/16" or thinner balsa from the engine area, again to keep the hot air out.

I intend to start assembly this weekend (HINT HINT ..... TOM ???) providing my plane comes in. It will be several weeks before I get it in the air because all my servos have to go to Horizon for a check up. I might even send in the 10X for a tune-up while I'm at it.

On my Rabbits, I glued a piece of i/4" ply at the bottom center of the large hole
under the motor box. Drill a hole in the small ply piece to exit your vent gas line.
Then Monokote/Ultracote the large opening.. Less weight, for those who are weight
sensitive..

The velcro straps were picked up at the the local hardware store.
Several colors and sizes, good price also.

Using clear 2" wide packing tape that I got from the local hardware store to seal gaps.
Cheap and easy, sealed on the bottom only.
Cut a 1/2" wide strip to run down the center (sticky side to sticky side)of the 2" gap seal.
This will keep the exposed gap seal, the area between the flight surface and the fixed section, from collecting trash.

Perry, you're gonna LOVE this plane!! What IMAC class are you going to fly? I'm in my second season of flying my WH 330, and have REALLY been pleased, especially after installing the new wings. This plane is great for ANY IMAC class (I fly Advanced).

The pics flier sent look similar to my plane. I'm using a BME 110 and the larger Pefa (3W) LL cannisters. The KS 1060 full tuned pipe should really make the DA sing if you get the tuning right. Tom's hardware packet takes care of most of your needs. I also use a pull-pull rudder with a single Futaba 9152. It's 280 oz-in of torque is enough for consecutive knife edge loops.

Keep us posted.

Do you have your pipes in a tunnel. (sounds a little Freudian)
Just curious.

Hey T-Bob I've meant to tell you what a great job you did putting your 330 together. I might get up there to fly with you and Ted shortly.

To answer your question, nope, I don't use a tunnel. Pics of mine are in a September, 2004 post found [link=http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/fb.asp?m=2185364]HERE[/link] . My throttle and choke servos and my gas tank are right above the pipes. The tank and servos feel warmer to the touch if the plane is simply sitting in the sun than they feel right after a flight. I've found that as long as there is airflow, then interior heating is not a problem.

Tim

Hello Tim!

Thanks for the reply and the vote of confidence. I will be flying Intermediate and Sportsman. I decided to run MTD Cannisters w/ a 90mm drop header. The tuned pipes will not fit but I think the cans will be just fine.

I forgot
The only change I made was using a Aeroworks 39% canopy.
It's tinted and has a sleeker look.

Hello!

I received my 36% Extra 330 today and WOW!!!! I am totally stoked about the quality of this plane. I do have a couple questions.

1. What CF landing gear fits this plane properly

2. What size wheel is everyone using? The 3 1/2" seems way small.

3. The cowl has a blue and yellow stripes and is this Ultracote or a special sticker or vinyl. I need to replace one that has torn off.

Other than that this thing is very nice and Toms service is #1.

Thanks,

Perry

I received my plane today and I agree with Perry, it is very well done. When I unloaded the boxes at home I noticed that the big box containing the fuse had several large tears in the bottom of the box. However, nothing seems to be damaged upon a quick inspection. The big surprise was the covering. I don't need to touch a single square inch on the entire plane. Even the edges of the colors are ironed down properly, I'm very impressed. My only complaint so far is the hatch fit. It does not sit flush with the fuse. I'll probably be able to do something to make it look better.

TOM,
My only question is I thought I was purchasing a SX but the wing says LX and the canopy is long. My only complaint about your service is that you did not email me back when I asked for the tracking number. Forward Air states they left a message on my machine on 7-14-05 telling me the package had arrived. The only problem with that is I don't have a machine at home. I called them on 7-15-05 and they advised me the package was ready.
