I got an email from Bill Hempel about what went wrong. He said that he believes that either the wing retainer screw was never installed or that it came out and fell into the fuse. It was not a wing failure that caused the accident.

I was there
I filmed it
It was NOT a structural problem.

You know what this is, don't you? Bill just gave the world the birth of the newest 3D move.....the "high alpha knife edge landing". Harrier landings are now childs play.

To bad Bill was not a better pilot! I mean come on broke the prop, bent the gear and scuffed up the wing tube. I think he should have had a tail wheel first landing there.

The thing I thought about when watching this was the little neighbor kid in "The Incredibles" that stands at the edge of the driveway and screams "THAT WAS WICKED!!!"

The fuse became the wing. the rudder became the elevator. The elevator became the Rudder, and the wing became one hell of a Verticle fin.

Who ever uploaded the video needs to rename it! How does "Poor pre-flight Survival Techniques" sound?

Yeah but the problem is you have to get rid of one wing panel to land it like that. that was so rad

Can someone please program one of the flight simulators to have this failure (wing coming off) so I can practice!

You only have to preset the reset-time to maximum and cut off the wing panel on a fence while flying. Then you get a little bit of the feeling that Bill had, even when it last not too long!

It's pretty easy to do with Aero Fly Pro.

You're right: Aerofly Professional and deluxe. Works great, but it's very difficult even with the simulator. What a great thing, bill did!

Setting up the sim is easy, the control required to handle a plane missing a wing panel is not.

wow! thats a cool video. I'm suprised he could fly it so normally without even banking to the one side like a knife edge. only a jet.
