Newly redesigned WH Extra 300S build thread
 

I picked up the new Wild Hare Extra 300 from Tom and Patty today, wow once again great people to deal with!
Here are some weights of components.

Fuse (bare fuse minus canopy, hatch, cowl, stab, etc) 2 lbs 14.6 oz's
Hatch (without canopy) 7.4 oz's
Canopy 9.2 oz's
Cowl 9.2 oz's
Landing gear (without axles etc) 9.4 oz's
Wheel Pants (bare) 2.6 oz's
Right wing panel 1 lb 2.2 oz's
Left wing panel 1 lb 2.2 oz's
Right elevator/stab 4.7 oz's
Left elevator/stab 4.2 oz's
Rudder 3.4 oz's
Wing tube 9 oz's
Stab tube 1.2 oz's
Tail Wheel assembly w/hardware 2.8 oz's
Misc Hardware (canopy bolts, wing bolts, axles, etc) 3.9 oz's
Total 150 oz's (9.375 lbs).

Packaged as one would expect with plenty of padding and cardboard to keep components separated and safe. Hardware was neatly packaged in bags with identification labels for each bag (thank you).
Very nicely designed and built bird!!!! As one would expect from Wild Hare's offerings.

Planned equipment, MVVS 45 MG (weighs 3 lbs 7 oz's with ignition), Hitec Digital 5945's & 5625's, Lithium Ion packs, Smart Fly power expander, etc.
Just a note, Tom supplied the correctly spelled "wild" for the wing.

So you must have been the first person to pick up a new extra that Tom was talking about. LOL.... I drove down this afternoon myself and picked up extra #2.
I got to meet and visit with Tom and his wife for a bit. Great down to earth people!
I just unpacked the plane and found it to be in terrific shape.I like the job the new builder did on the plane. I was also impressed with the way the cowl attaches.It hooks from the bottom and has to "hidden" screws from inside the fuse that holds on the cowl. You end up with a cowl with no visible mounting screws showing. Very clean look. Thanks for posting the weights Greg. I was wondering that also.
I'll be using a DA50 With JR 8611's all the way around. I'll be keeping a eye on your build Greg. All that I have had a chance to so far is to unpack. I'll get started on the build this weekend

No doubt. But here in the sub-tropics, I wonder if the high humidity will make it swell/contract with temperature changes.

I seem to recall that the first batch of GP Patty's had a cardboard tube, and it caused all sorts of headaches; mainly wing tubes that didn't slide into their receptacle.

Not bashing; just voicing a legitimate concern.

I personally leave the wing tube in my airplanes all the time.

We have been using paper tubes since we started. There has never been a complaint about them changing sizes.

I did try phenolic tubes on one set of prototypes, they were OK but the paper tubes have one big advantage. If the fit is a little too tight the tubes can be sanded to fit. You can't do that on a phenolic tube.

If you buy a plane, then go and buy a CF wing tube or other aftermarket product that is not exactly the same size, you are pretty well out of luck. But with the paper tubes you can sand the tube to fit.

That cross bracing is very impressive. Just looking at the design I can tell this will be able to handle the most violent 3D flying. The hatch area tends to be a weak area in any aerobatic rc plane. Seems that someone has been doing their homework.

The entire airframe appears to be a lot lighter than the original version. If the new 300 comes in only 1 pound lightert than the originals it will be a killer performer. I suspect it will come in lighter than that.

Silversurfer I agree. I had the special and with it I had unlimited vertical with my DA50. It came out at 18.7lbs. Yea, she was a little chubby.;) But I was real excited to hear this one was coming out lighter then the special. I was concerned that by making it lighter it would compromise the integrity of the structure. But I'm really impressed with the way they took out the excess weight and still maintained the strength. If it flys anything likt my special and is a pound lighter,I will be a happy camper.
I got the motor mounted on mine last night but it looks like I'll need to get a larger spinner.


There is also red and yellow scheme.

Yes, that's it for now, they are almost all gone anyway.

There was a language problem when I ordered, they translated "it's ok to send white/red/blue also" to "i want only white/red/blue".

No big deal, the red/yellow/black will be here in a few weeks.

Ok! I kinda dig the red, black and yellow. Just at the field I have been able to fly the Little Edge, 300 special, 28% Edge. I think this new Extra is my cup of tea.

The language barrier is always fun. Even more so when you try to communicate complex ideas or even subtle details.

I encountered one minor measurement problem, elevator servo cutout is a couple mm's too narrow and one doubler was not glued. Not a problem though I was able to gently run an exacto knife along and shave a the opening slightly to accommodate my 5945's. I can easily reach through to the rear of the fuse to glue the doubler back.
Should have the control surfaces glued, and servo's all installed and programmed hopefully in the next couple of days then will install the engine.

My Extra is scheduled to arrive on Thursday. Hopefully, the big brown truck will have it here on time and in one piece.

I have a couple of questions.

What is the length of the stand-offs used for the DA 50 when installing the motor on this model?

I plan on running 5955's on all the control surfaces. Is a one inch servo arm acceptable for all the surfaces (except for the rudder)? Or should the servo arm be longer? Plan to use this for IMAC and 3D.

For the rudder, should I use a 3 inch straight servo arm for pull/pull or should the rudder be mounted in the tail for this model?

I want to use the a lightest and most efficent muffler there is for this model, which one should I use on the DA 50?

What is the lightest redundant battery system available?

5955's will fly a 40% plane just fine so yes you will be fine especially on 1" Arms. I am planning on using the stock DA 50 muffler...light and cheap.

Dont mount your rudder servo until everything else in the plane is in place. From there trial balance to see if you need weight up front or in the tail. Thats not so much my idea but from the WH manuals and it makes sense.

4 Cell Duralite, Fromeco, TBM lightest redundant setup and any brand only as good as your regs. If running one reg, use a 20amp rated one.

you need a total of 3 1/4" stand offs.

DA's longest stand offs are 3"

just make some 1/4 inch ply spacers with a hole saw.

Looking Good! Make sure you open the cowel enough to allow your spark plug wire back in without rubbing. Fiberglass cuts sparkplug wires like a knife. I have some screen spline(line the cowel opening) and automotive vacuume tube(protect the plug wire) you can borrow. In order to use the screen spline you will have to get rid of the corners in your opening. Here is a pic of my 260 cowell.

What's the secret to splitting the screen spline in a straight line, when I've tried it seems to spiral and wonder arround. also did you use any glue to hold it in place.
