RE: 50cc Sukhette Build Thread, now in progress!!
No problem....Its not that impressive but I finally got the engine response I wanted[8D]
|
RE: 50cc Sukhette Build Thread, now in progress!!
Thats the part that impressed me - how quick the engine throttled up and down!
|
RE: 50cc Sukhette Build Thread, now in progress!!
Do you have any idea how many years I've been telling people that's the way they should run? Worse, any idea how many people have told me they just love their ?? engine even though it burbals to high heaven? There's no reason to have an engine that does that. Right Joe? There's a lot of good engines out there. There's also lot of "good" engines that could be done a little better.
Now, back to that lovely 50cc Sukhette. I DO like this plane:D[8D] |

RE: 50cc Sukhette Build Thread, now in progress!!
I also got a chance to fly my sukhoi today. Much the same results as Silversurfer. I had a terrible amout of trouble with the first toc 53 from Tom. He asked me to send it back and at first I was hesitant because I wanted to try to fix the problem and it was the weekend.. blah blah blah. Tried to fly it last saturday and it didn't go well at all. Took the engine off and sent it back to Tom as he asked. He was a real trooper, didn't have time to really work on it and figure it out so he sent me the engine off of his sukhoi. I installed it, rerouted the choke and throttle servo ( his carb was rotated 180° to mine) started it up and it ran 100 times better than mine did. Took it to the field this afternoon, started it up, let it warm up, and off we go. I was actually jittery after the first 2 minute flight last saturday cause it was supper twitchy for some reason, and as stated before the engine was unreliable. Not the case this time. One click of elevator and one click of aileron had it straight and true for the most part. The engine sounded great and had awesome power. I need to get a real world weight on it as I have no idea. Re-routing the servos changed the balance a little bit, adding in more expo and lowering the throws all had the desired impact. A very docile plane on low rates that responded exactly as I wanted it to. I have had a few GS planes in the past couple of years, but have had self induced bad luck, so I haven't really learned to 3d like I would like to. In my limited ability the plane was still performing very good. I have a bit more tuck to gear in knife edge, and full on power straight up climbs wanted to veer left at both ends of the field. Engine thrust, torque, or nose heavy, not sure. Flew it around just having a blast for a bit. Tried to land it and all it wants to do is float. and float, and float. Finally got over the floating or so I thought. Every time I sat the plane down as gently as possible, it wanted to jump back in the air. These were not hard landings, stalled out landings or anything like that at all. I would touch it down and it would just float up or spring up again. Need more stick time! I need to talk to Tom about the idle on the engine. I wasn't comfortable with lowering the idle with trim, it sounded like it wanted to quit running. So I flew it to the ground and landed it in the grass on the side of the runway. Let it cool down before I flew it again. Almost identical to the first flight, except on touch down, I discoverd the tailwheel had fallen out of its bracket. The wheel collars and bracket were still there, just the wheel and its axle were gone. So that was the last flight of the day.
I know that was long winded, but I gotta say, after all the little tribulations I have had, this is one joy of an airplane to fly. Very responsive, good throttle transition. Need to adjust the low end I feel, but I want to talk to Tom about it first. I think its a little lean, but not sure. Tach numbers were 16 to 17 on the low and 6450-6500 on the high end with a 22-8 bunny prop. Anybody out there on the fence about this beautiful plane can come on down off of it and get one. You will love it. |
RE: 50cc Sukhette Build Thread, now in progress!!
That 3mm-53 idles down just fine. I had it down to 1,300 just to see how low it would go and still come back around again. It works but don't go there. Shakes things pretty good, and it's on the ragged side of not coming back on. If after the warm up you can tag 1,600-1,800 you'll be just fine. When you hit final just drop the idle trim another click or two for a nice slow speed settle in. Most people take off before the engine has fully warmed up so the idle is higher after 5 or 10 minutes of flying and needs to be brought down for landing. That round cowl bleeds excess speed very well. I was doing split esses to final off the end of the runway and she slowed down beautifully.
If you're getting a lot of pitch to the belly in K.E. it's an indication of being tail heavy. Pitch to the canopy is nose heavy. As you put in some flying time check your trims to verify you're not carrying any up or down trim all the time. The best way to adjust that trim is with the balance. |
RE: 50cc Sukhette Build Thread, now in progress!!
Been keeping an eye on this thread. Anyone have individual parts weights without electronics? Been thinking about an electric conversion and this plane is really appealing. Thanks.

RE: 50cc Sukhette Build Thread, now in progress!!
Question - Why have wing pockets? Looks? Wing mounting stronger?
It just seems that it would be harder to build so it must be for a reason.... By the way, I just ordered one. I have always wanted a Sukhoi ever since I saw a Byron Originals one fly many years ago. |
RE: 50cc Sukhette Build Thread, now in progress!!
Good question. It definately makes the wing fit perfect everytime. Pretty much assures the correct incidence as well in a jig built plane. They also give you a nice place to locate switches and wiring. You'll see that when it gets there. I've come to like them quite a bit.
User tip about the wing pockets. The balsa used to make the inside of the pockets can be pretty soft. Has to be to make that tight wrap at the front. This seems to be across the board with other brands that use pockets as well. I like to go all around the balsa of the wing pockets with a quick squirt of thin CA to harden it up a little. Nothing heavy or serious, just a fast line of thin ca all the way around the middle of the balsa. I do this the same time I go over the joints everywhere else. Just something I do with every arf from any maker. You will definately like the plane!! |
RE: 50cc Sukhette Build Thread, now in progress!!
Thaks for the info and I will harden up the balsa when I go over the joints as always.
Now I guess I better pick out a nice place to eat tonight as I've some explaining to do when this new (or should I say another) airplane shows up.[sm=teeth_smile.gif] |

Don't feel bad, I have another Edge stashed in the shed...She wasn't home when the brown truck came the other day;)

Finally got around to maidening my SU-26, with the 3MM 53cc in it. All I can say is, watch out how much elevator throw you have, they are very effective in the pitch change arena. Other then that the plane flew awesome. The 53cc engine looks like it's going to be a perfect combination with this plane. I now have the only 2 Wildhares in Japan. All of the other club members like the Sukhoi.
|
RE: 50cc Sukhette Build Thread, now in progress!!
I've noted the same thing with the tail surfaces. They work very well. 10 or 12 degrees of elevator is all one needs for normal or IMAC flying. You may still want to soften the reaction a little with expo. I started out with 20 degrees for low rate and detuned to 15 for my basic flying. It's still a little quick but I prefer that.
Have you tried any low speed snaps yet? Even with the plane almost stopped they wil stop right where you tell it to. |
RE: 50cc Sukhette Build Thread, now in progress!!
I haven't done much aerobatics other then some rolls and loops and a few high speed snap rolls. I was just basically flying around to break in the engine. Will get more time on the plane this coming weekend, and will tune the engine for better throttle response. Then will start throwing it around. As for expo, I never could get used to it. I too like things to start happening as soon as the stick is moved off center. I think I might need to move the CG back a little as it doesn't hold the 45 degree inverted line, and takes quite a bit of down elevator to hold it level inverted. It's balanced right now at the aft edge of the leading edge sheeting at the wing tip.
|
RE: 50cc Sukhette Build Thread, now in progress!!
I started the CG on mine in the back 1/2 of the wing tube and had about 3 ounces of lead behind the engine box for adjustment purposes. I pulled half of that yesterday and it was not as nose heavy but still required a little more down elevator to hold level when inverted than I think it should require. I'll be removing the rest of that lead next time out. That should put the CG either at the aft side of the tube or slightly behind the tube.

RE: 50cc Sukhette Build Thread, now in progress!!
I got the chance to fly mine sunday for the first time with my setup in it. I have as much throw as I can get pretty close to 60 degrees on all the tail surfaces. Every time I flew this thing my grin got bigger and bigger. The group I was flying with was had all Yak 54's and the Su-26 did the tightest flat spin's upside down as well as right side up. I allways do this one manuver that I love to do I fly down the field slow pull the plane vertical full up elevator. ( The Wall ) and then i add full power and feed in right rudder and left alieron. All my other planes would spin and fall to the canopy and the spin would tighten up eventualy falling out This Su-26 Honda tightened up and got flatter in the spin than ive ever seen as well as holding altitude longer than ive seen any of my other planes in the past. I realy couldnt believe what I was seeing. The other pilots couldnt believe what they where seeing ( ie. Me jumping up and down saying Holy %#@$ ) Guess i was pretty thrilled with this plane.

RE: 50cc Sukhette Build Thread, now in progress!!
the bark it had did stop me short of wanting to race but in all fairness to any product you would need 2 of the same setups and fly them side by side. Johns Yack is way light almost a crime how light it is. And John you know me Ill put a lot of hours on that motor before Ill pass judgment. If it runs and runs and runs without busting a plane due to flameouts like some other motors we know about. and them one flip starts god knows I dont need to be working up a sweet flipping a prop.
Johns right it sure did spin a prop and the response from the throttle was breathtaking more of a snap than a spool up or did I say Bark? |
RE: 50cc Sukhette Build Thread, now in progress!!
I've had the DA flame out, but never a DL

I was refering to my troubles with a Evolution 58 as much as i love the awsome power of that one and i do love the way it runs when it runs right but the mysterious way the thing decides to run lean still troubles me. Ive enjoyed many uneventful flights with that motor A real power house but trusting it will never happen. Its very hard to regain trust in a motor. Im going to repait the Cap that it flew in last and the Ultimate it flew in last. The cap will get this engine and ill redo all the fuel sytem and run it as ritch as I can stand to and if by some act of god it survives It mat get a new plane but till then its going in a crash victom and flown till submission. The repaired Ultimate will get a new motor possably A DL? My Marzo rebuilt Ultimate will continue to enjoy the DA still the most trusted engine I own But the clock is ticking on this new 53 and she sure has won a few points with me.
as a mechanic by trade I know full well there are no 2 engines that will run exactly the same. however close they are they all have there own way of running and that changes over time. My Da was a 4 flip with choke on and 4 flips with choke of every time I run it unless she is still hot this year its been 5 and 5 almost willing to turn the low end screw out a smidge and with the hotter weather we are having that might be a plan. But she runs smooth and it hasnt busted a plane that wasnt my fault. over 200 hours on an edge and 86 on an ultimate says a bit to me about trust. I look forward to the 100 hour mark on the SU-26 maybe by then ill know how to knife edge spin that thing on demand. |
RE: 50cc Sukhette Build Thread, now in progress!!
Don't let anybody fool you, the DL is a good engine. Just don't crash it and break the mounting lugs off the case. It will be crying time for sure if you do.
