DZ160 Tuning

Hi Dave,
What is the best method to tune the DZ160. I have difficultly at times trying to determine the perfect balance between high end adjustment and pump adjusment as they both affect each other. Do you have a good method which works.
My engine is only new wth about 10 flights on it. Half of them have been deadstick landings but I believe the engine is loading up on extended downline idles.
Regards,
Peter

I can't advise very well as it seems to be a personal thing. I know that most guys run the DZ's way too rich at the top end setting which may be compounding your problem.

I Dave if i could comment here it sounds Peter has the pump to high and the top end to rich. I had the same problem with my DZ.
I found 3 things that will cause this
1 is as above to rich
2 is the fuel i have had good results with 30% Helli even 20% still had dead stick landings
3 overheating in the cowl
4 clunk use the YS one others will cause all sorts of problems forgot this one we spoke a couple of weeks ago about this one
I have run DZ's in 5 planes now each with there own problem.
after stripping and rebuilding several times now. Not there fault but because of my bad flying (crashes)
I found the easiest way to tune is use 30% nitro Helli fuel.
Take the cowl of
set the high end with a tacho to peak back of 3 clicks.
idle about 2000-2500 wait Patience 30 seconds full throttle no hesitation don't touch it.
after 30 seconds at idle revs pickup to low pressure revs die to high pressure.
then do the high end again peak revs back of 1 click or 50-100 revs.
fly the plane should go great. Try several flights then refit the cowl test fly if it dead sticks could be a cooling problem they need fresh air over the pump and head i have had to make baffles to get the air were it is needed.
These are great engines some say they are difficult to setup they are not just different to the average engine.
if you were to learn on a YS and then go to another brand you would think they are the difficult one to setup.
Once flown a YS tuned properly you will never look back
after 2 gallons of fuel with these settings i pulled the engine down to check every thing the crank case was wet with oil a teaspoon full in there the rocker cover poured oil all over my bench.
I must comment hear about the fuel i mix my own 30% nitro 10%coolpowerLV 10%coolpower blue normal visc this was recommended to me by the Australian f3a flyer's. We oftem fly in 40 deg c heat here thats 104F
