Cold weather starting

My Feedback: (2)
My YS 91FZ normaly starts easily in the warmer weather, but the last few times out it has been a real struggle to get started. The temps latey have been 10°F to 15°F. I've checked my glow starter and it is hot. I assume ( yeah, I know ) that it's the temperature that is making it hard to start. Are there any tricks to make starting easier? Some one said to prime the engine with a little lighter fluid. Good idea or bad? I normaly prime it with a small amount of fuel ( Cool Power 30% ) during warmer weather and it starts right up. Oh, I already tried a new glow plug, an OS #F. That didn't help.
Thanks,
Paul

I would say that you will struggle a bit at those temps. It would help to have a really hot glow igniter. How many amps can your deliver? If its one of those single battery ni-starter types then its not going to do it. Part of the problem is the battery will not perform well at those temps either.
We pattern guys use a glo driver that has some punch to light the fires. The Radio South Pro-driver or the RCATS glow driver. These have larger capacity batteries. Like 2000mah 6-8.4V packs and they step the voltage down and allow the plug to draw really good current like 2-3-4amps if needed. The single battery types just can't keep up unless they are on a fresh charge....and then when its cold well they suffer.
Lighter Fluid. NO in YS engines, Yes in other glow engines. It works, but the petroleum based oil will not be good in the YS engine engines.
A good hot glow starter and a little prime of 30% will be your best bet. They as all glow engines especially 4 strokes will become very stubborn at those temps.
Warm the engine up in your car then take it out and crank it right up...that is another possible solution. Depends on you model.
Then again in the winter when its that cold out, some guys started flying indoor with little electrics.

I can't say too much. I just spent the day at the Arizona Electric Festival. There were a bunch of people and it was the Friday group. I suspect it will be darn crowded tomorrow. Then again it was typical Arizona weather, The low was about 40 last night with a little rain early in the morning. Then it was upper 60's for the day.
