3DX!
Hey guys!
i would realy like to get into this micro 3D stuff. Can you give me some ideas form your setup such as what brand and type servos, reciever, speed controller ect. I would like to use the basic setup with a GWS motor a li-poly cells. Any help would be great!

RE: 3DX!
I threw together a 3DX, GWS 350 motor/gear box (6.6-1 ratio), still going back and forth between 10x4.7 and12x6 GWS prop. I had a Great Plans 12 amp speed ctrl (CS 10 I think), so far its still alive. running 3 Hitec HS 55 servo's, GWS 4 CH Rx, KOMKAM 1200 3S HC batt.
This thing rocks for what it is. I've only flown it a handfull of times out in front of house, mostly in the dark under the street lights. I'm going mod mine to have larger ailerons, other than that, I think its a keeper. You can download the plans @ www.foamyfactory.com.

RE: 3DX!
Having flown mine with a brushed and brushless motor, I can tell you that going brushless makes bring up to true 3D performance (continuous 2:1 power ratio for 20+ minutes, without worrying about burning up any motors).
If you plan to stay with brushed motors, you may want to consider the smaller 3DX version (26" wingspan) with a 2s lipo battery. I am planning to try that when I get the time.

RE: 3DX!
Here's my standard 3DX that was scratch built from the Foamy Factory plans.
GWS 350c motor with D gears.
GWS 12x6 prop.
GWS Pico 4 channel rx.
Blue Bird BMS-306 servos.
Castle Creations Pixie 20p speed controller.
E-Tec 1200 mah Lipo, 3S1P.
FanFold Blucore foam.
Covered with colored packing tape.
Weight = 13 ounces.
CG moved to 5.0" back from leading edge at fuselage.
Here's a short video of my 3DX hovering inside the house:
http://www.eldonmo.com/video/3dxscarescat.wmv
Shortly after shooting this video, the replacement brushed motor burned out. The original motor had lasted about 10 flights, the replacement motor only lasted about 3 flights due to excessive torque rolling. I'm now flying a brushless Himax 2015-4100 and a Castle Creations Phoenix 25 controller in my 3DX and have been extremely pleased with the results!
In hindsight, I should have gone brushless from the beginning since a brushless Himax motor with a brushless CC controller works out to be about the same price as a brushed controller and 6 replacement brushed motors.
My advice is to spend the extra buck$ up front on a bru$hle$$ motor and controller. In the long run, the brushless setup will be cheaper than a brushed setup, and you'll avoid the hassle of dealing with burned out brushed motors. Since it's very likely that you'll end up going brushless later on anyway, you won't want to end up like me with an expensive but useless brushed controller as a token reminder that I should have listened to the advice I was given about going brushless to start with.

Hiya Dave......... LTNS
TOTAL Agreement on the motors. Don't even waste yer time on a brushed motor. My first motor only lasted 5 flights, I could see where ths was going, so I have a HiMaxx 4100 on order. I see from Dave's posting, I'm on the right track.
LOL on the cat getting propwash.

RE: 3DX!
Thanks for the replys guys! I would love to go brushless but since I am only 12 and no one will hire a 12 year old to work I dont exactly have that much money. I am relying on my pocket money so I can buy this plane.

RE: 3DX!
I have started a new 3DX and found a kite supply that sells graphite rods fairly reasonable. Is this the same as CF and if not are they better or worse?

RE: 3DX!
Chris.
I have been stuffing around with these things for a while (should really be building my new pattern ship, but these are so much more fun).
My setup is:
GWS 350
6.6:1 GB
11*8 GWS prop
Schultz 24 amp s-controller
JR R600 receiver
4 GWS Naro BB servos 9g
2s E-tech 1200 pack (wont kill your motor)
My latest one I build down to 9.5 oz with all this gear using 3 and 6mm depron. With this weight and the 11*8 prop you have the same sort of acceleration you get from a BL setup.
The lipos I got through the same person I get my depron from "Solar mobility" in Sydney but you could get them through [link=http://www.modelcopter.com]Zaf at modelcopter[/link]. He offers the lipos at the same price as what you can get them for overseas only he is Australian (Zaf is the Australian importer). He also has a link to a new Australian site called easy electric flight that has most things.
Don't buy a lipo charger, if you can put together an aircraft you can build a charger for about $8.
I am also looking into some local companies to help me with CD-rom conversions ( help machine the end bell and shafts etc), so that could also be an option in a few months for you.
If you have any questions about any of this or want plans for the charger just reply here or PM me.
Matt

RE: 3DX!
I got my motor and GB from www.aicraft-world.com very cheap freight and will be at your door within 5 days, but you need a paypal account though. I ordered mine with a few spares to be safe. Motor/GB was $18 US, motor (with connector capacitor and pinion) was $8 US.
No none of my motors have burnt out. I only use 2 cells, so there is much less chance of burning the motors out, pushing them passed 10V is what kills them, I prefer to have lighter plane than have a more powerful setup. I have about 6 hrs on my 300 motor which was in the UB30 and it still woks well, I only have alittle over 1hr on a 350 so I cant tell you just how it is going to go but I can tell you it has much more power and is no where near as hot when I land.
I have some short videos I took a few days ago showing the performance of my new plane, when I find somewhere to put them I can show you just how well this setup works in a light model.
I will send you the details on the chargers that you can build tomorrow or tuesday. If I don't send you anything by then remind me again.

RE: 3DX!
Definately Chris. It has enough to hold a hover right down to 7.4V. Thats about 12mins in my plane, it has no undercarriage so thats how I take off. By the way there is a charger kit available from [link=http://www.modelcopter.com]andrew zaf[/link] for about $30.

RE: 3DX!
Chris
I am using a e-tech 1200. New etechs are comming out so as of the 13 of feb the price for the current generation will hit its final price ( the new ones will be heavier, more expensive but able to handle much higher currents). Under $40 Aus for 2s pack from modelcopter ( I picked 3 more packs up on tuesday night for the new price). I have a new 2400 etech pack that I will try in the plane, this will bring the plane up to about 12 oz. If it works I will be able to have 3-4 flights on the one charged pack.
At the light weight it has more than enough thrust to hover and t'roll, enough acceleration to get out of trouble quick and will do waterfalls and blenders very nicely.
I cant seem to PM you. The charger diagram and part no's are located at [link=http://www.shdesigns.org]sh designs[/link] in the rc planes section
Matt
This picture was taken from a video 8mins into the flight. (its not a 3DX but uses the same power system and weighs under 10oz and has the same wing area)
