Tilting a lawnmower motor 90 degrees.
Hey.
I scored a free (my favourite price) 2-stroke suzuki lawnmower motor, and am looking at flipping it up so the output shaft is horizontal.
As far as I can see it should be pretty easy as all I have to do is turn the carby 90 degrees right?
Which means I'm gonna have to make some sort of adaptor for it.
Just wondering if anyone's done something similar and could show me some pictures perhaps?
Any other tips regarding using different carbies also welcome, but preferably I'd wanna use the one that's on there already.
(I have no access to machining equipment, lathe or anything like that, and my welding skills are basic but improving. Steel welding only.)
Thanks

Well I'm just getting started myself but some tips I can pass along are. You need to assess how you can mount it to it's intended project. It may be a great engine but if you can't mount it on something it's not much good. Make note of the model and serial numbers as that will aid in getting parts that may be needed. The condition of the engine is also important. I started tearing down a free-be engine that appeared to be a good engine today, just to find out the flywheel and crank are damaged. Without seeing pictures of your engine I can almost bet you will need to manufacture some parts to convert it. Having a friend that can make them or paying someone will be necessary.
Have fun and good luck

Pictures posted.
Mounting it to the project is not going to be a problem.
Just making something to turn the carby.

From what I can see in your pics that doesn't appear to be that big of a problem. Best I can tell a piece of aluminium plate with two sets of holes. One set for old carb location and one set with studs for new location.

Only problem would be the long studs that are already there, as they will be in the way of the carb itself.
Are they just screwed in to the cylinder?
I'd hate to crack the body trying to remove them.
Done that on a car motor once......[]
Another option I suppose would be to leave them in there - cut them to length and cut a new thread in them?
Hmmmm......

Just tried unscrewing one of the studs, and of course it snapped.....
Ah well, I'll have to drill that hole out and re thread it I guess.
At least I didn't crack the case.....

Just another thought. That carb looks like it was designed to work just in up one position because of the float. Consideration to changing carb to something like a Walbro from a chainsaw will be necessary for reliable operation in various attitudes.
(I know my attitude is better when engines run good. Lol)

There are some pump carbs or Walbro type used on some lawnmowers. Perhaps one could be adapted to this engine. With a float carb you will be forced to use a tank above the engine with limited areobatics. Little to no inverted flight.

Ah yes well guys, I'm gonna put this project on hold for a bit anyway, as I have too many things on the go at the moment.
It wasn't to be used in any kind of RC project anyway, but a powered scooter, so the carb wouldn't have been a problem as it would have been the right way up the whole time.
Maybe later on I'll get back to this but for now it's on hold..
Thanks for the comments guys.
