RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
Hey Bob,
You did well with the heart attack it sounds like. I did okay with the stroke but the 4 months in the hopitals didn't help me too much. I've followed this and other threads and done more than a few scale mods on my Corsair. Maybe this winter.............. I will sand my heart out and look at TF accessories. I'm doing gear doors and plan on using a G-62. My first choice was a ZDZ-80 but the G-62 was so much less that I had to try it. I plan to install RAM navigation lights as well. I will have so many questions you guys may tell me to "take a hike" but, just bare with me, I want to be better than I was. And I can only do that with good help.
Time for bed....therapy is tomorrow and they tend to ware me out.

Bob,
I tried the link before I quit for the day. Would you check it when you get a chance, it didn't work for me. I'll try it again tomorrow.

Hi rt3232,
I've got doctor's appointments this week but hope to get back to building this weekend or early next week. I really like what I see here. Good post and excellent ideas!

wulf how did you paint the plane? the blue looks faded in spots like weathering (sun bleaching). Looks great! Is this technique or just camera flash.
Mine is comming along, but I have a long way to go to the paint stage I juts started the wing

Thanks for the comps guys. Peter, the flash does a good job of bleeding through the dark blue..along with the super-power halogen work light. I did leave as much fading as I thought might be a bit realistic, and most anything that's seen is now at a point that clear coat addition will blend it all in really.
Here's a few more shots of things going on....slow but sure I guess. Not geting much time lately to do anything still with school's crushing workload at the moment. The stars and bars made it come alive a bit more though. The stencils from Gary are top notch as always. Had a smidge of bleed on the top of the lady, but very minimal and easily taken care of after with a micro brush a little later on. Just the fuse stars and bars and a couple more markings now on the main airframe.

Looks great. Where did you steal the canopy from? I am going with a byron canopy on mine. Here's where I am at...... I added shrouds to the horizontal and vertical stab to hide the hinge line. I also sanded to TE to help sink in the control surfaces. I am about a long away from paint

Looks like you are coming along nicely with your build, just don't forget to put in all those lighting holes it really helps, come time to balance.

Peter, the canopy's just the stock TF job made to slide manually. Good call on the Byron...I think it's a little more to scale.
Cimara, Checkerboard's kinda time consuming to do it right, but really looks great if painted on. Personally, I would just measure, mark and mask probably. Or you could cut squares from thin cardboard or frisket and use them as stencils...but you'll need to be precise on getting the squares the same size. Maybe just order a bunch of cut square stencils from Getstencils.com and put them on the drawn layout on the plane's surface. Probably a lot more accurate than trying to cut them yourself. You'll just have to count up all the squares you'll need!!!
Thanks Bob. There's really alot going on on the surface now with all the different colors and stuff that will eventually go on. I'll have fun putting on the dummy radial and doing more little stuff throughout the winter. Still quite a ways to go, even with the painting. Anxious to get wheels back on and put her on her feet again. Still all the radio guts and linkages to perfect yet too. That first day of exhaust puff out of the pipes is going to get the blood flowing though. I'm already saying, oh no, it's gonna look a little bit better than my flying skills might dictate. [X(]

And there you have it....I knew Gary would be the man for the little squares. Winston, you might try using 1/4" 3m plastic masking tape for crisp lines. It's REAL flexible and doesn't bleed...expensive and tough to find of course as well. Any good auto paint store will have it though. Get a bunch, you'll use it everywhere, especially on canopies and things that require compound curves. Good stuff.

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
I guess I got time to decide on that one before I cover them. There is a build on rc scale builder and they calculated that it saved about 4 ounces.
http://www.rcscalebuilder.com/forum/...535&PN=1&TPN=4
So if the corsair comes out to 25 pounds less than a 1% weight reduction, not that exciting. I know you are all going to say it adds up (kind of like saving money.) I'm leaning on Not doing the lightening holes.
http://www.rcscalebuilder.com/forum/...535&PN=1&TPN=4
I added Lightening holes to the control surfaces. The weight went from 138g to 119g for a total savings of 19g or .67 oz. I had hoped for more.
I'm looking at a factor of about 3.6:1. So basically, 1 oz removed from the tail, is 3.6 oz removed from the nose.
