RE: Solo props????
Thanks Jan for the kind words.
Just a little update to Solo.
We have taken Solo into the future. Almost all of the blanks are now being cut on a 10 gang CNCrouter. Each profile is first handmade the old way, scanned into a CAD program and tweaked from there to maintain the proper airfoil. For those of you still waiting for props, that was the hold-up. The first ones on-line are the P-15 and corsair profiles. From these blanks 90% of the other profiles can be sanded to shape.
We are working hard to play catch-up with the back orders and are about 2 to 3 weeks behind.
I just want to thank everyone who has waited for the blades to be produced. The production time to finish the blades in now cut in half. And best of all, all the props are made in the USA.
Again Thank you all,
Wayne Fussell

RE: Solo props????
Hey Wayne
Glad to hear that the solo's have a new home. Welldone mate. Like that I can tell you that you have at least 3 users of soloprops in my field that are definately your customers by now.
I post a few pics of the models that we fly in my field.
I have also a 4 blade square tip (p-51) with hub for my new Fiberclassics P-51 Mustang. Also a 4 blade with hubfor my TFG P-47 Thundrebolt , and 2 more 3 blade props + hubs for my Hellcats.
I will contact you for spare blades since I have to keep some stock here to have the fleet "warworthy"!
All the best to your future endeavours!!

Thanks Fly2XS for your commpliments.
The P-47 is running a ZDZ-80 cc, while the first Hellcat is running a Zenoah 62 and the second (VF-1) is running a 3W 85cc.
Happy flights

RE: Solo props????
I have had my solo prop since 2007....
I have basically finished the mgian TF p-51 but have not finished reinforcing the landing gear...
Anyway....glad to see it is up and running....
I was very concerned, and thought that if Solo had not re-started business, I would have to make my own blades
or have a potentially a paper wieght ( in case of a nose-over or accident)
I am not relieved and will most likely use the prop right away when I test fly it this year..

RE: Solo props????
Johnny Red, how does the ZDZ 80 run with that 4 blade unit? What does the p47 weigh? I have a ZDZ mounted in my Mig 3 and a scale 3 blade would make things just a bout right. Does the ZDZ pull with good authority with the 4 blade unit? How about the G62 how does it rate with the prop.? Have you compared them to running a standard 2 blade units?

RE: Solo props????
Hi
This is what my reduction unit looks like so far. I am building it for the c-arf p-51, and I am planning to fly with a 4 blade solo 30" p-51 style, It won't be long before I am ready for a test run. I am curently producing the hub between the driven pulley and the prop.
Best Regards

RE: Solo props????
Hi
Well, I don’t know if it will work. I have done some calculations with the mvvs power prop calculator, found on the website of mvvs.nl, and in theory it should work.
The engine is a 3W 80 Xi with 8,5 HP. If it can run a 26x12 at about 6000 rpm, it should be possible to reduce it to about 3500 rpm with the reduction unit. The pitch on the 4-blade should be at around 18-22, and that is the beauty about the solo prop, it is ajustble.
Best regards

RE: Solo props????
I agree with oesterling. You don't need more power to turn a bigger, multi blade prop, you need to reduce the rpm and increase the torque and pitch. I have done this several times with my home made scale props.

RE: Solo props????
Agreed!
In my BT Spit I had a motor capable of four times the power, but that was to reduce the RPM and have enough torque to drive the prop with higher pitch. I could have used a smaller motor combined with a reduction drive.
The current draw, and power consumption, was the same as other 83" electric BT Spitfires.

RE: Solo props????
You do need more power to turn a substantially larger multi blade prop. It may be that the 3w 80 is enough motor if a 26x12 2 blade prop @ 7000 rpm = 30x24 4 blade prop at 3500rpm... but my WAG is that your talking about 3x the prop with a 2x advantage... My Zero above flew about the same as another similar size warbird I had with a direct drive G62. IIRC we flew it with a 22X12 2 blade vs. the 24" 3 blade with (of course) more pitch (can't recall exactly, but I think it was around 20" on the 1.75:1 torquemaster. 26" blade set also worked ok, but 28" was too much prop; couldn't get enough rpm's X pitch. Hope I'm wrong, just being a devils advocate here. You can always go down in dia, say to 28, and it will still look cool!
Currently considering a planitary drive to turn 4 blade props on my electric XP-67 project. Love the cool factor of scale flying props.

RE: Solo props????
Why do you need more power?
The power needed to move the model is given by the models characteristics, and the effiency of the prop..
If you want a given speed on a given model you need a given amount of power, split that power on the efficiency of the prop and you have the needed power from your motor. There is no reason to claim that a bigger prop is less efficient, on the contrary, bigger props can move air more efficient than smaller ones.
What it does require is more torque, both to drive the size of the prop and the higher pitch of the prop. I did this with a larger electric motor, but it might aswell be done with a reduction gear. To try to use fairly the same pitch as the small prop and drive it at the same RPM would make the large one less efficient and you would require more power.
If the power needed would increase with a bigger prop, how come my Spitfire with 4 blade 24" Solo and a Spitfire in Britain with a 2 blade 20" APC have the same current draw in flight? If any difference they where to my advantage..

RE: Solo props????
Thanks to all!
Wayne I just sold my 4 blade 32" diameter Prop I had gotten from Carl with my 3W 200 cc engine as a package deal so I'll be needing everything for the Moki. Why can't I run the 32" on the 250 Moki? Is it not as powerful as the 3W 200? The bigger I can turn the better. I just want to fly scale so I'm not looking for speed. PM or email me with a total price quote for the 4 blade setup with yellow tips and the adapter if you have time. This is going on my F4U-5N 124" Corsair so I need the correct prop tips. Here is my email address:
Thanks again,
Barry

Hey Barry,
I copy and pasted the message above and sent it to for my wife to take a look at. Its no problem running a 32" 3 blade on the Moki 250. We are still running behind several weeks. Still playing catch-up.
