RE: 1 st low wing
I've had both the 40 & 60 4*s. You're right, the 4*s tend to "float" on landing. I didn't do it when I built the "40", but did on the "60". I put in an extra hinge on the ailerons. I flew it a few times with the "full wing". I then cut off one bay of the wing on each side. The "floating" on landing was gone !!! It also, increased the "roll rate" substantially. That was the best mod I could've ever done !

RE: 1 st low wing
I love my Four Star and continue to build replacement parts when they are damaged. I had a mid air recently with a T28, the Trojan dropped from the sky in pieces. I landed my Four Star with half a left wing without difficulty.

If you want to build a kit, the Top Flight Contender is a great flying 1st low wing plane. Lands like a dream. Kit is at least 30 years old but has been reengineered to build quicker. Great with a 60 engine.

Em, build-to-bones in 10-16 hours? Uh huh, yea sure, really - how gullible do ya think I am . Heck, I have over 16 hours just trying to figure out how to unpack the box and come up with my covering scheme.
Oh, BTW- Ultracote over Monokote! Yea, it's a religious thing.

RE: 1 st low wing
Sig Somethin Extra .40 size. They are unbeliavably forgiving and slow down to where you can walk out and catch it if you want to. My son handed me back the radio with wide open throttle (o.s. .60) straight down and I 180'd it in less than 5 feet. I have crashed it about 4 times, ripped the gear off a few times, and it is still flying strong. Turn down your throws and it is more gentle than any trainer, turn em up and go nuts. My friend built it from a kit and reported it being very simple to build. It is also a great platform to begin learning 3d stuff/aero. Good luck.

The design engineer responsible for the SIG Somethin' Extra is a lurker on RCU. He's still flying the original "box cover photo" SSE as it is still in his hanger. Ya want to laugh out loud (LOL) on the flight line? Hit the high rates and let 'er rip! Altitude is a good thing ...

RE: 1 st low wing
I second Jim's recommendation about the Sky Raider Mach II for your first low wing plane. Cheap, fun and easy to fly. Put a Thunder Tiger Pro 40 in and you'll be set for Club 40 pylon racing. Search Stegall Hobbies and Don can set you up with a great deal.[8D]
Dave
PS: Sorry, just realized you're in the UK. Not sure if you guys have gotten the pylon racing bug, but the Sky Raider is fun to put through it's paces. It's hard not to have fun with one just wringing it.
"How about a World Models Sky Raider Mach 2. No frills, Great flyer and you can buy two for the price of many of the planes listed above.

Nah - if you're gonna do an ARF low wing pylon racer take the LA Racer over the Mach II - both manufactured by The World Models. The LA has dual aileron servos, cowl and more aesthetic overall look. At least in the US you can pick them up unhinged.

RE: 1 st low wing
I have both (LA Racer and Mach II). It seems the Sky Raider wins more often than the LA racer for some odd reason, and the SR Mach II is $10-15 cheaper. However, I do like the dual ail. servos on the LA for mixing in flaperons.
Dave
PS: Both of these are ARFs, not RTFs. If you want a nice low wing "kit", look for a TF Bonanza!!

RE: 1 st low wing
Glad to hear I am not the only Sky Raider fan out there.
Let me ask a "bigger picture" question. Are you sure you want to build your second airplane? My second airplane, (first low wing) lasted one and a half flights. If I had spent the last three or four months building the thing I may have jumped off of the nearest overpass. After several years of flying I finally built one and I still had someone else test fly it for me. I get very attached to a project that I put that many hours into. Time can be more valuable than $ and building takes lots of time. Something to consider.

RE: 1 st low wing
Another vote for the 4 Star. I've had all 4 sizes and you can't beat 'em for your 1st low wing. I know, they only make 40, 60, & 120 sizes, but I recently aquired a "26" size from a friend. He reduced the 40 plans to a 48" span and powered it with a .26 four stroke. He said it was way over powered so I set it up with a 480 brushless out runner and 3S 2200 lipo. Maidened it yesterday and what a SWEETHEART!!!! I think it's gonna replace my 4 Star 120 as my faverite sport plane. My 120 is 6 years old with close to 300 flights on it. Only broke the fuse in 1/2 once

RE: 1 st low wing
For a fist low wing plane, I would have to say either a CG Tiger 2 or the astro hog. The tiger 2 is a low wing trainer capable of aerobatics and still floats in the air. I had one and flew it for 7 years. The astro hog is aslo another great floater and also cabable of aerobatics. Both these planes will get a a first time low wing flyer off to a great start. The Ultra Sport is a quick, responsive flying plane and will keep you on your toes. It really depends on your experience of flying and what your looking to get into. If its aerobatics, I'd stick with the tiger series and if its speed, the Ultra Sport. Well I'm sure you'll get plenty of options in here. Have fun.

If you want to build, the Sig Kougar or King Kobra both fly like they are on rails. (Kougar was my first low wing and dad was flying the King Kobra at the time)
If you want an arf, I'd go with the tower Kaos. I flew the old GP Super Kaos and it is a great flying plane.
