Finally got mine ready to fly, hopefully next week will be the maiden. I was hoping to minimize the cowl cutting but the dam mufflers extended too far forward to not cut the cowl.... a normal cub cowl and I would have been ok...

I installed a 3W-78ib2, hopefully it will be enough.

I put a 3w 106 in my clipped wing cub and cut just what I needed to fit in cowl and the motor overheated and lost the intake seal. You may want to check with others, but I think you do not have enough exit air opening around the exhaust tube area. Just a thought to check into. Enjoy the cub and you will like the motor. My 106 is excessive and I think your 78 will be fine.

Rule of thumb has always been twice as much area going out as is going in for good cooling.

you can't see the openings in the pic but behind the exhaust stacks I needed to open up quite abit to be able to get the cowl to slide over to install the cowl. I'm well over 2x the inlet/exit ratio.

I guess the real question is "how much going in is suficient?'. Hard to determine I imagine but as much as possible without destroying the looks of the aircraft (when possible).

Another option is to better use your inlet air by baffling to ensure the air flows over the cylinders, I might do this yet as it would be simple to fiberglass some baffles in the cowl.

I finally got a chance to maiden my super cub, what a floater Had a slight wind down the runway and the plane lifted off in about 30 feet at under 1/2 throttle.... With flaps down I would estimate the ground speed was at 7 mph with the small head wind, aerobatics not so great but for a relaxing airplane to fly this is it....

Prop: Mejzlik 26x8 6500 RPM

I think they are smaller.... 40% but not sure..... The diamerter is 6", I bought them on Flying Giants.

How hard is it to install floats on this plane?

AllI did is add a 1/4 ply plate in the bottom for the rear struts to mount to the front goes to the factory gear location.

Here is an old favorite link to some vintage float instruction. http://www.seminolerc.com/EZ-Float-Design.html This is an old article from the 80's.
Chuck Cunningham was a float flying guru back then and his information still pertains. He recomends a float that is 75 to 80 % of the distance from the prop hub to the rudder line. I would recomend the 80 %. Not as pretty but much more functional. The tip of the float must project beyond the prop or you wil experience lots of bad! Anyway, it is a starting point. Just make sure to rebalance the model and keep them as light as possible. Planes with floats do not recover from spins near as well as with out them. Personal experience.

Built my own with help of a friend. We band sawed white foam to his templates. Then I put a single layer of 6oz glass cloth on with epoxy. Filled and painted them. Built and installed in two weeks. They are only 5lbs complete. Has been a blast and always draws a crowd.
Last winter I stripped the covering, Put all the servos inside, added a light system and recovered it with Stits fabric. added a couple of pounds but it still floats like a glider.
