Pete, I am in good humour this morning, Mrs. Hobbs isn't going to church so I get to ride my big Saito powered bicycle to church. It's 31 miles each way and the ride and the service are good for the soul. I get to serve communion too. When I get back I'm going to give little .30 and annual. Actually its a semi annual.

Default .30 in gold

Hobbsy:

Way Out Willie's black treatment on the jug really makes that .30 look spiffy! Nice memory!

I'll have to look into a Graupner prop of the size you use. My .30 swings a Powermaster 10x4.

Let's see if I can attached a pic of mine in gold and black. Don't be fooled by the fuel setup as I mount the motor horizontally when running for easier priming. The little red job in the background is a scale model of my dad's Aerconca 85 Champ. He flew the real thing off our South Dakota farm back in the 1950's. The scale model watches over my workbench.

You must have heavy corks. Is that because "down under" the bottles are upside down?

Nice looking engine, maybe you can get one of our Australian friends to send you a 10x5.5 or 10.5x5 Bolly, I think Graupner makes both of those sizes too. I like both brands because they have enough weight to let the little Saitos idle slowly. I tried a couple of Zoars and they are so light that 3,300+ is the best idle you can get with them.

Here ya go Davey, http://www.v-eastonline.com/categori...o-blade-props/

I've got a Bolly 10.5" x something that I ran on a two stroke. Performance suffered bad enough to change the prop at the field back to an APC. Dar sent me 3 Bollys a few years back and the first one was bad enough that I never tried them again. Guess I should do a comparison on a Saito. I should have a 15.5" that was intended for a 125.

I won't be flying soon as my pacemaker battery is about drained. I am scheduled for a new pacemaker on Friday. The anesthesia and other drugs should put me in a rotten mood for a few days.

Good luck with that. My bad attitude is woman driven. They drive you nuts all the time.

Bolly props are very user specific. The clubman range (Khaki in colour) are similar in performance to APC's. All my Bollys worked well in their specific applications and I never had any real problems with them. I used to get the factory to balance them not much more cost and I didn't have to worry about working the carbon Fibre composite. Re matching the prop to the engine one I remember was a guy using a 12.5 x 5.5 that we had got especially built (to spec) for the YS 53 for duration. He put in on the front of a 63 and went no where even the equivalent APC 12 x 6 did better. I designed a 13.5 x 6.5 for my 63 with the same blade twist as the 53 12.5 x 5.5. I think the 10x 5 varients might be an interesting test. Try the equivalent APC first on the fuel you will use with the Bolly and let me know how it goes. I might have a couple of those that might work.

FN, one feature I like about Bolly's is that I have not had to balance any of the ones I have. I have a collection of, 10x5.5, 12.5x6, 12.5x8. 13.5x6 and 13.5x8. Not saure if I have any 11's or 11.5's though. I also have a few Taipan's I got from Fiery through some horse tradin, as they say. For a long time I have been fascinated by all things Aussy including your Country Music.

This Bolly is a 13.5x6 on my old Saito .80.

That slow idle option sounds nice so will give Graupner a shot. Thanks for the link.

A better view of the mini-Saito showing my test stand setup.

Hobbsy that is a Bolly clubman, equivalent to the APC range. I used the carbon fibre props (black or grey black) and they generally needed balancing unless you got the factory to do it. I turned a 13.5 x 6 and 13 x 6.5 and a 13.5 x 6.5 (depending on the day) on a YS 63 at around 13K rpm + depending on nitro content but always starting at 30%. Currently you can buy these Bolly's but only in commercial quantities. If you google Bolly you will get the new web site and they'll tell you all about the US agent if you are interested

Old fart one of the things about Bathurst is it is always around my birthday (1/10). I saw a Bathurst Monaro (real not replica) in average condition sell for $75K at the show and shine meet in Cairns a few years ago. A point to ponder re these old toys, Mk1 Cortina, Lotus and GT 500 in kit form ex Melbourne go for $30K + and Mk1 Escort BDA's from the same source in kit form go for $40K + and the V8 Capris (Mk1 version) name your best offer over $40K.
One of the interesting things of the international car races held here in OZ (read F1) is the fact that a number of the drivers and crew fly pattern ships for recreation usually using bloody big Saitos or Ys engines.

Davey, FN et al I re-set the valves, the exhaust was an almost negligible amount loose, the intake was fine. Both set to .003" Pictures in the morning, 9:45, sun are lousy to to say the least. The picture of it running is at full honk showing quite a bit of smoke, I made up a new mount as the old one looks like Swiss cheese, too many other engines mounted previously. The mount is a Great Planes 20-40.

PS, I would not run a 1.50 this early in the AM. Also, I got to break in a brand new Hobbico 5000 MA Glow Lighter. The old 4000 was about 15 years old and had lottsa charge/discharge cycles on it.

Saito FA .30
Prop===Bolly 10.5x5
Fuel===PowerMaster 15% with 18% 80/20 syn/castor blend
Plug===Taipan 4c plug
Max rpm=10,295 occasionally drifting up to 10,325 which doesn't count.
Idle====2,000 give or take about 25.

Hmm, I can still access my 30 (still NIB) and I believe my old mate has a run in one used in a Pacific Ace before the owner went to the dark side. They are supposed to be good engines for 50% sized Texaco models and I have this little pommie Bushwacker that could benefit from some more grunt. Interesting about your engine Old Fart, my biggest glo 4 stroke at present is a NIB 115 but there are more in the offing as my flying mate is doing a "restructure/ reorganisation" of his engine collection. Read I have so devices he is lusting after and he thinks he has some I want. All these people who want to take advantage of me in my "invalid state." Of to get a new calcium battery for the VT and then cause the B&C is not with me a visit to the local model shop. Such is life.

Old Fart interesting comment re air bleed carbs, in O/Timers they are very desireable for Texaco because you can get great economy by setting them up so the bulk of the carby operation is through the airbleed rather than the normal needle valve. An art that took me a long time to learn but works great on the 50 and 65 Saito and if you know the settings is easily changed for max performance in Duration.

I no longer own any OS-fs but am pleased with the Taipan 4c plugs, the little .30 sure idles great with the Taipan. I ran it again later this afternoon when I found a Graupner 10x5.5 and a brownish/orange Grapuner 10x6. I will try the 10x6 tomorrow.

The rpm with the 10x5.5 was 10,150 one click rich of peak to steady it up some.

Hobbsy try a pitched up 9 inch prop sometimes they give interesting results on these small engines. A good project for a windy day.

Hobbsy, I find the best test for any plug is to see how it performs with a couple of hours under its belt. I always new plugs at the start of every competition (using the old ones for sport flying later, they are also good for give aways) and have found no matter what the maker most if not all plugs drop of by varying degrees after about an hour of operation. My favourites are Saito followed by OS followed by Taipan.

The plug I have used the most by far and had the most success is the Fox Miracle plug, it will work in any engine and last forever.

FNQFlyer- The Clubmans that I have are the 13.5x6, 11.5x7, and 10.5x7. Thought I had a 15.5 but don't.

I had hoped to try the 13.5x6 on a Saito 72. That model didn't survive. I have a Saito 30 that I hope to have a model built for in a few months that could try out the 10.5x7. I think the 11.5x7 is the one that did poorly on a little .455 two stroke. It never seemed to develop the rpms.

I use either Saito or OS plugs, whichever I have or is cheaper. The prices change from time to time.

Has the Saito 90TS twin been discontinued?

I was just on Horizon Hobby, looking at engines and it is no longer listed. And there appears to be an 'updated' 60 twin with a new dark anodized case.
