This is the newer model with the Black back plate. The first one I had was just silver like the rest of the engine!

Got the 120 running again. It does have more power now but I have the 125 on the Funtana now. No sense in taking it off..

I put this on a .56F, I also have a 1.00 but the carb throat is 8.5mm and the stack is only 8.0mm so no go. I believe the carb on the .82 is the same configuration as the .56 so the stack and 'O' ring should fit well.

'O' rings are measured by inside diameter and thickness. The thickness is in fact the diameter of the cross section at any point. I chose 8mm I.D. to match the I.D. of the stack, and 1.5mm thick is just right to close the gap between the carb body and the stack, it couldn't be a better fit.

Seals can be obtained in a variety of materials to suit the application. I chose Viton but other materials may be quite suitable too. The manufacturers specs usually list the fluids etc. that the seal can handle.

Five more flights on Sunday and the front of the plane is as dry as a bone! You'll like it.

While the mid block stack is a smaller inside diameter thns the carb opening on the FA-100 and FA-125, it has no adverse effect on the engine's power. Don't be afraid to use one on your larger engines.

Barfly, isn't one of the Viton's qualities a resistance to heat (as well as the fluids)?

Powerlines, a silver colored backplate on the early ones, 82's..... was it a silver plastic??

The FA-82 is an overbored FA-72, and they both have the same plastic back plate from the start of production. It's possible one or three were made with a metal back plate. I know of none.

Are you sure your FA-82 wsith the metal back plate is not really an FA-80? They did have the metal plates.

I am not sure if it was metal or plastic. the first one I purchased was new in box at Hodges hobbies. It had a grey back plate on it just like the motor. I just figured it was metal. I never took it off. This new one and the new one in the shop now has a black back plate. I again do not know if it is metal or what. I was just suspecting that it was metal. I know the one on the 120 is metal.

Need to break in here with a quick question....

What is the ultimate prop for the Saito 40 ? I'm looking to get better RPM and maybe more speed . The plane is a tad on the heavy side for the 40. It's the old Midwest Me-109 40 size. Somewhere between 4 and 5LBs I would guess.

There is no "ultimate" prop. Different props for different planes and purposes. Try several until you find the one that works the best. Start with an 11x5 wood

You may be disappointed with the performance of your plane with the FA-40 on it. But what the hey, give it a try. Go with an 11x6 to start, if the plane flies OK with it then you might use a 10x8 for more speed.

You get two new spring caps, teo of the C clips, and a new set of valve springs when you order part number SAI6547 from Horizon. I strongly recommend replacement of the springs when the engine is pulled down.

If you have lost one from a new spring set just reuse one of the old ones, or if you just have to get the spring cap and there's some reason you can't get the springs PM your mail address to me, I'll send one.

Thanks Bill,,, that was the answer I was looking for. Ultimate prop may have not been a good choice for words,, but what the heck.
I rebuilt the project as a time killer anyway. Added a cowling, cosmetic struts, etc to improve the looks. It of course added weight. I've tried all these props mentioned plus many more while breaking the FA-40 in. Flew the little critter yesterday with a MA 11x5. Biggest prop yet. Was slow and scale like but had plenty of thrust to carry it around. Reminds me of an under-powered trainer. Truth is it kinda felt nice to relax and get back to the slow scale like flying for a few minutes after flying my Edge's and other 3/D - Acro and warbird type planes.
I can see where the little Fa-40 would be a great choice for a lighter plane though. And you can't beat that Saito sound in a little package like the fourty. And talk about sipping fuel.

Ernie, solafein, from memory, Viton can go to 220*, which is 30-40* higher than the alternatives. Resists a wider range of chemicals, too. Should be good enough for our babies!

Bill, To follow your advise on the 1.00 I'd have to renege on a friend, I agreed to sell him the second stack with an 'O' ring for his own .56. My 1.00 is in bits anyhow, waiting on bearings. I figured it'd be like running with the choke partly closed. I can maybe test it once I have it sorted.

This is my first time visiting this great thread.

I have several Saitos from a 65GK to a 150GK. Nothing better, period.

I've been building and flying for 39 years, even had a LHS for many years. My customers thought I was crazy carrying Saitos in the store until they saw how reliable they were. I've worn out several OS Surpasses but not one Saito. I evey sold my YS 120.

I can see now I'll be a regular visitor here.

The last fuel I bought is Wildcat 15% Nitro, 18% total oil (80% Synthetic, 20% Degummed racing castor). My question is..... Is this a good fuel to use in all my Saito engines (FA72, FA1.20 air bleed, FA100 flat twin) ? ? I know glo fuels are a little like car oil, and religion, where opinions vary considerably. But, I would like to have some of youse guys opinions!

Your Wildcat 15% fuel is fine with its synthetic/castor blend. I use Omega 15%, a similar blend.

F, all I have used in my Saitos since 1993 is WildCat 10% Premium Extra and a little of their 10% Extra which I keep for my RCVs. They thrive on it. Before that I used Fox 15% nitro fuel with 20% castor, that actually worked well also. But, back then I was "dumber than a mine mule" about fourstrokes.

After a 3 year sabattical off from flying, I've dusted off the planes and got the fever. I'm looking around for a club and need to replace all my Tx/Rx nicad packs.
