If we want it and we vote for it (or him) then that's the way it works.

Default saito mk 90 twin , question please.

HELLO FELLOWS, i have a question since this club is dedicated to SAITO; I recently got this engine, and was inspecting the engine and compared with another one i have, im not too expert with engines, so, first , the engine was sold to me as NEW, i looked around and dont see any residuals of castrol or anything, aniway im posting pictures so you guys tell me what do you think about the condition. NEW 100%, possible started once?
The other thing i want to Ask is:
Wen i compared the NEW engine top of the pistón, or pistón head, Its different than the one my older engine have, it has like a dark área divided By a shiny área next to the cylinder Walls.
Any ideas on that?

What do you folks think about wet grinding a few thousands off of tappets to restore them to flatness. A couple of my newly acquired used engines have pretty beat up tappets. I'm not sure whether the tappets are solid hardened steel or only surface hardened. Seems to be plenty of lash adjustability to accomodate slightly shorter tappets. Thoughts?

Not new, there are some carbon deposits on the exhaust valve stem and piston. Looks like a low hour engine though.

It's risky to just fuel and fire used engines of unknown origin, especially if they have just been lying around for prolong periods of time. Bearings could be rusty, valve lash improperly adjusted, carb adjustments way off etc etc.

If it were mine I would flush out the crankcase and carby with acetone then lube up the entire engine with dextron atf before turning it over. Then I would turn it over by hand to check for bearing smoothness, crankshaft straightness, check the valve lash for proper clearance, check the tappets for free movement and adjust the carby to factory presets. Then I'd fire her up and listen for bearing noise.

They're not actually flat are they. The big block 120 series tappets have a radius. If that radius is changed, the duration will change.

Turkey if you put the glow plug back in you won't be able to see that, just kidding.Check that the valves move freely and adjust the lash,i use a cigarette paper.Open the throttle and blow thru the fuel line then take the backplate off and look for rust on the rear bearing and add some atf.Turn the prop over a few times and feel the bearings you can also grab the prop at either tip and see if there is any play in the bearings,a tiny bit is ok.If it's all good put some fuel in it and kick er in the guts, they sound real nice.

Sr is the weather getting any friendlier up your way? down here it's the end of summer nearly,so as it cools down they hold an international pushbike race here.Closed off big sections of our major arterial roads for the event(happy motorists, not)and a few of us thought we'd go for a motorcycle ride in the hills to get away from it.There was twenty miles worth of them up there too,i never seen so many pushbikes three and four abreast on narrow windy roads with endless double white lines in my life. There where quite a few sheilas on the outside near the centreline and it was tempting to give them a pinch on the arse as you tried to squeze past but in our modern world that might get you a "go directly to jail/do not pass go" type of penalty.None of them have rear vision mirrors and most had some music plugs and wires attached...can't see, can't hear you coming, pretty low survival instincts i reckon but they get really offended when one of their mates gets bowled over. They should be in the bambi with popcorn class

Well I finally found a small used Saito, an older one, FA-45. Its smooth, so it was well taken care of, I dont feel any sort of roughness in it, but will still pop the covers off to check and adjust the valves. Its for the SIG Citabria, and its the identical engine that is shown on the plans, so its the right engine. My only question, did they not use mufflers back then? It just has a straight pipe on it. I got it for $60, there was another one, newer looking, he was stuck at $70 for it, but since I only needed one, and I dont have anything else that it would be used on, I held off on buying it as well. I also found a tiny little 30, but didn't ask the price on it, again, no use for it.

I am still mad at myself for passing on that Saito 300T for $300. SIG now has a 14' WS Rascal kit they are looking to produce, and the 300T would have been perfect for it. I would love a 4 stroke on it, but its a 50-60CC size plane, and thats a LOT of glow fuel.

Turq, it's new, no carbon on anything that I can see. Even the bronze inserts are clean and new looking.

Turkey has posted in a separate forum about this.Dave it does look brand new and will be interesting to see how he runs it in.I am familiar with your method and barrys, mine is half way or half arsed depending on the readers mood ..turkey stay below 4000 and leave the glo stick on.They'll run without it but it's smoother this way, like slipping over on duckpoo.Second tank don't touch any needles and listen to it get faster and sound better, about halfway thru this tank take the glo stick off you'll be doing about 5500 by then.Third tank start letting it rip you'll hear when it wants to.Fourth tank and it's at your mercy to tune wide open, enjoy

Forgot to say it was'nt all misery yesterday gettin stuck behind pushbike riders,we got stuck behind this harley too that had what looked like the whole families suitcases strapped to it,must have been a hell of a picnic, did they have any popcorn tucked away in a sidepocket somewhere...did they have room?

Good find Turgui, brand new and unrun is always good. That is the 2nd MKII version having the one piece cylinders. Clarence Lee called it (2) MKII. You'll love it. The 4,000- rpm limit is for the first 10 minutes only with the carb at 1/4 to 1/3rd open, not regulated by a super rich needle setting as some claim.

PS, I have an early FA .40 and FA .50 that have that, not so shiny finish on the rocker covers.

Just a few bits of information for those of you who might be interested from the NSW (SAM 1788) O/t Champs. In Texaco (fuel allocation event) there were 6 x Saito 65 abd 2 x Saito 56's flown in the event (The 65's placed 2nd and 3rd in a 30 entrant field) They used 15% nitro (CD supplied fuel) with either castor or synthetic. Most used mufflers but un pressurised tanks. The other predominant was OS with either 61's or 60's being the engine of choice. In duration (vertical drag racing) the engine of choice was the Saito 56 (5 off) and a lone 62. They were up against predominatel a field of YS's but Saito's are making a prsence. The 65 is a heavy long stroke engine ideal for Texaco where as the 56 (and 62) are short stroke light engines good for Duration. The duration engines usually run on 30% nitro and synthetic oil.

Dave anyone who has ever in the heat of the moment got so excited about starting their very first brand new saito engine up,with fully rich needles knows the angst of hearing it go straight to 6500 and you realize that you've hooked the throttle up back to front.

Trev if you run more nitro it gobbles fuel in duration? can you expand on the no fuel tank pressure i've tried it and you need to open the main needle quite a bit cheers mate.

It is hard to tell on those twins, so far it's not happened but I know it could. Also, i'ts impossible to see the air bleed setting on the right cylinder.
