RE: ASP/MAGNUM FS400AR Rebuild/Overhaul
you are right about the methanol attracting moisture but i shouldnt have any methanol down in the crankcase as the fuel never gets near it . As i also use low nitro and dont run it very lean the acid issue is never a problem. If this was a 2 stroke then it would be a different story as raw fuel would remain in the crankcase after it was shut down

Sorry...
I was under the impression that there's a difference between "gear tooth failure" and "disintegration".... non?
Maybe that's where Chrysler went wrong?? [X(]

My current vehicle is a '97 Dodge Ram still going strong after 16 years.

BJ....while you said "Ford or Chevy" in jest, you need to stick with Chevy or "Dexron" style as the Ford fluid had a proprietary abrasive mixed into it.
....and thats just the older stuff! Several of the newer fluids have proprietary products mixed into them so be kinda careful.

Here are my 2 current Chrysler products.
Here she is running 12 flat on motor.

125HP shot of N2O.

If I could getb this to run 1 second off the Mangoexpress time I would be happy.
Solid low 13, high 12s on motor.
Mid 11s on the juice.

Ditto for my 97' Chevy with 206 on it.

And FWIW, Chrysler didn't do so well down here - disappeared as "Valiants" many moons ago already. Having said that, they have made a bit of a resurgence with their retro-styled PT Cruiser jobbie, the Crossfire, and the mafia lookin gansta-mobiles (can't remember the exact model).
Valuable info in the autro-trans fluid - ta
Would never have thought that an oil would contain abrasives of any sort - detergents, yes. Abrasives, no. Do it's GM's "dextron" I should use if going down the auto transmission ARO, yah?
I'm keen on using WD40 as my after-run fluid - which I can now spray a good dose off into the nose-cone via the little port that I drilled though the front.
Any comments about WD40/CRC etc? Are they a reasonable choice for a lubricating and rust-protecting ARO?

I wouldn't exactly call the Ford Type F fluid 'abrasive', lol... Ever heard of B&M Trick Shift? It's green Type F.
BJ: WD40 is good stuff, but be aware it evaporates. It will not leave a long lasting coating of lube on any parts.
SR Telemaster: That's one badd azz Dodge you have there!

WD40 is a "water displacement" product and that mostly accomplished with solvent. This also makes WD excellent for cleaning of gunk or adhesive among other things. The solvent will evaporate off though which means there is no "protective" film, which is what we are looking for.
You want a product with good "wetting" properties. Castor also has a high rating for this. "Wetting" is also the area where syntetics fail us when we turn our engines off. For some good reading on the subject check this out..... http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showp...3&postcount=13
Marvel Mystery Oil "Air Tool" oil seems to be an all time favorite also
For a spray that will leave a "protective" film try to lean towards firearm industry products.....whatever you guys have down there. These products are designed to lubricate and leave a protective film.

RE: ASP/MAGNUM FS400AR Rebuild/Overhaul
I went to an evening airshow today. Lots of nice planes flying about including some WWI era aircraft. All in all a really nice evening. The reason I mention this is because one aircraft especially (a Polikarpov Po2) seems to have a giant ASP400 on the nose!

RE: ASP/MAGNUM FS400AR Rebuild/Overhaul
Thanks DR.
We can get "TriFlow" gun oil down here - it has a teflon additive in it. I wonder how good that would go as an ARO.
On that subject, there's motor oil additives such as Slick 50 etc. that also contain teflon (and probably teflon based motor oils as well).
From my experience with TriFlow, it can tend to go a bit 'sticky' if you use to much - but that's probably a desirable side-effect for lubing our 400's (??)
BJ
PS - I'll have no trouble getting a fresh dose of ARO right up into the nose-cone and cam gear areas now that I have drilled my little "oil hole" up on the front of the nose

RE: ASP/MAGNUM FS400AR Rebuild/Overhaul
I had that car in the early 80's, and 25mpg was quite good for that size engine and the 1965 technology of the AP6 itself. Just a standard carby, pushrod operated 2 valves per cylinder - no electronics.
If you think that's thirsty, then my old 454 Chevvy slurping 6mpg would have really freaked you out! LoL
Now - back to our normal transmission... how hot are the gases once they hit the exhaust ring? Could a collector be made of of Carbon Fibre, or would it still be too hot back there...?

The old Vals!! most were killed by the dreaded electrolysis (rust) around the steering box.. the 265 in the Centura was a real fun car if you didnt want to turn or stop..
